A heartbroken boyfriend’s story on Reddit titled ‘AITA for breaking up with my girlfriend after she rejected my proposal twice’ has prompted fellow users to shower him with support.
Reddit posts surrounding intimate relationships and family drama are way more entertaining than any television soap, which explains the amount of interest people take in knowing about them and even sharing their opinions. Unlike the story about toxic parents’ qualms about their daughter visiting her maternal family and the confusion it caused in the Reddit user’s mind, ‘AITA for breaking up with my girlfriend’ is pretty straightforward, making it easy for the users to choose between the boyfriend and the girlfriend who got dumped.

Reddit user asks ‘AITA for breaking up with my girlfriend’
The Reddit user identifies his girlfriend as Sierra, whom he has been dating for four years. The boyfriend is head over heels in love with his lady and wanted to propose marriage two years into the relationship. However, he waited for another year so he could settle financially.
Last year, he finally proposed to his girlfriend on the beach where they had their first date. But, she refused to marry him because she wasn’t in the “right place personally” to get engaged yet.
The boyfriend was disappointed, but he didn’t let it get to his head too much because he pushed the proposal by a year for his own reasons.
He thought it was only fair to give his girlfriend the chance and waited for another year to ask her to marry him and this time, he sought the help of his friends to make it more beautiful.
Boyfriend’s proposal for marriage gets rejected for the second time
A year later, the Reddit user planned to propose to his girlfriend for marriage before a fountain in the city’s botanical garden. He and his friends even orchestrated a nice dinner to make the experience more memorable.
However, when the girlfriend saw the roses and everything else her man had planned for her, she teared up. When he got down on his knees, she said “Not just yet.” The boyfriend says her rejection for the second stung him yet again, but he didn’t see what was coming next.
As the boy was sure that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with his girlfriend, he asks her what was stopping her from marrying him. She responds by saying: “I just want to make sure that this will work.”
More than the rejection, the boyfriend was deeply hurt by the uncertainty about him and the relationship occupying his girlfriend’s mind. She decides to call quits on the relationship because, according to him, there was no point in holding on to it when his partner wasn’t sure about seeing him as her life partner.
When he said he couldn’t do it anymore, the girlfriend began begging him to not leave and said “Fine, I’ll marry you, just please don’t go.” The Reddit user says: “That made me mad, but I didn’t say anything. I left.”
However, many of his friends and family are still calling him out for ending the relationship of four years over two rejected proposals.
Users think he made the right decision
Reddit users think it’s high time the boyfriend moved on with his life because his girlfriend isn’t sure about settling with him and he did nothing wrong by choosing to walk away from the relationship.
One user wrote: “Four years is plenty of time. You are perfectly right to move on. She can not expect you to wait for her forever. She hasn’t even given you a legitimate excuse as to why she can’t.”
“She didn’t even suggest a long engagement just straight up said no 2 times, that tells me that she doesn’t want to marry op at all,” said another.
A third user said: “Heal up and move on. You were never quite what you wished she saw you as. Oh, and learn the lesson. Do not do a public proposal. I can’t believe she did this to you twice.”
“I don’t know what she’s playing at, but after four years, it should be a yes or no. She seems to be holding out for a better offer- find someone else,” added another.
