Tropical storm Hurricane Hilary has struck the state of California after making landfall on Sunday, August 20 and now many are wondering where the eye of the storm is right now!
The storm made landfall in the northern part of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula on Sunday. Since then it has hit Southern California. The storm had first risen to the Category 4 hurricane category before weakening and turning into a tropical storm. Following this it made landfall in Mexico. The National Hurricane Center mentions that the storm will cause a “potentially historic amount of rainfall.” It could generate a “catastrophic flash, urban, and arroyo flooding including landslides, mudslides, and debris flows.” But where is the eye of Hurricane Hilary?

CNN’s latest report reveals that Hurricane Hilary’s eye is currently about 390 miles north of San Diego. It is traveling through central Nevada, towards the north at 35 mph.
As per the latest update, Hilary has now downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone but continues bringing heavy rains and high winds. Hilary has also become the first tropical storm to hit California since 1997’s Nora. While the storm has been downgraded now, over 25 million people between California to Idaho remain under flood watch.
On Sunday night, the storm made arrived at the heart of Los Angeles. Around 8:15 pm on Sunday evening, the storm arrived directly over the Dodger Stadium. The Los Angeles Times notes that it was an unexpected move from the ‘eye’ of the Hurricane as it was initially forecast to directly move northward to Owens Valley.
Is the eye of a hurricane calm?
Yes, the eye of a hurricane is the calmest part of a hurricane. The University of Illinois notes, the skies are clear right above the hurricane’s eye and the winds are light.
The eye is at the center of the hurricane and is between 20-50km in diameter. It is the point around which the rest of the hurricane rotates.
The Hurricane’s eye remains calm because the winds converge toward the center but never reach it. A peculiar scientific phenomenon moves the winds away from the center. It is called the Coriolis force and deflects the winds from the center causing it to rotate around the hurricane.
