While Pixar might’ve skimmed across putting some skin on show in «Ratatouille,» it was nine years later that Disney made a CGI-animated entry with animals that had an entire nude scene in the funniest way. The film sees a wily fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), team up with dedicated cop Judy Hoops (Ginnifer Goodwin), and part of their investigation has them visiting a nudist club run by a hippie and long-haired yak called Yax (Tommy Chong). Playing on the idea of animals without clothing being scandalous makes for a great comedic beat that was shown before the film’s release.

The sequence was initially played as part of a showreel at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival by chief creative officer John Lasseter, who praised the moment, saying, «This is Disney animation’s first nude scene. It’s been a long time coming» (via The Guardian). It’s a change from other family films that had nude or lewd innuendos snuck into what now stand as popular favorites. Ultimately, the culinary whiz rodent got away lucky in the grand scheme of things.

Speaking of Pixar, here’s our list of the biggest Pixar movies of all time, which may or may not include a kitchen-obsessed rodent. 

It seems that sneaky «Star Wars» homages were an in-joke for some «Star Trek» creators, as Alderaan briefly reappeared in another series. In the «Star Trek: Deep Space Nine» Season 1 episode titled «A Man Alone,» the planet crops up during the scene where Odo (René Auberjonois) checks Ibudan’s (Stephen James Carver) calendar.

Meanwhile, other fans have pondered how the Federation would have reacted to the Galactic Republic’s destruction of Alderaan. As Redditor u/TheBurgareanSlapper wrote, «If Alderaan is an Imperial planet, its destruction is a clear-cut case of an internal Empire affair and none of the Federation’s business. The most the Federation Council may do is send a strongly worded letter to the Imperial Ambassador. Maybe.»

Sadly, high-definition Blu-ray technology has ruined the idea that both franchises are canonically intertwined. That said, «Star Wars» and «E.T.» might exist in the same universe, which is also an exciting notion.

The fan trailer is very detailed, teasing key locations like Metropolis, the Batcave, and Themyscira. Unfortunately, it doesn’t feature any plot points and it’s unclear if this concept would serve as a Justice League origin story or if the team is already operating. Regardless, it’s a breathtaking «what if» scenario that has us thinking how great this flick would be. For example, Tom Cruise — Hollywood’s last great action star — is seen as the Flash, which is an amazing choice.

An interesting component of this fan trailer is how it recasts former DC-supporting players into iconic superheroes. Kevin Costner, who plays Jonathan Kent in «Man of Steel,» is seen as the Green Arrow. Similarly, Diane Lane, who stars as Martha Kent in the DCEU, is aptly cast as Supergirl. Morgan Freeman, famous for appearing as Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, gets the chance to play Martian Manhunter in what would be a meaty role. 

The villains are also getting some love in this «Justice League» AI trailer, as fan-favorite Willem Dafoe is cast as the Clown Prince of Crime. The actor has long been fan cast as the villain, with Dafoe pitching himself to star in «Joker 2.»  Another casting that can’t be ignored is the late Christopher Lee taking on the mantle of General Zod, which would arguably be the best performance in this hypothetical flick. 

The theory that Albus Dumbledore chose to put Harry Potter into harm’s way — multiple times and throughout three very dangerous «tasks» — in the Triwizard Tournament is definitely interesting, but some Redditors didn’t quite agree. In the books and in the film, it’s explained that once a name is drawn from the Goblet of Fire, the magical object that chooses Triwizard champions, a «magical binding contract» is placed upon the person; it’s strongly suggested that the penalty for breaking said contract could be death or something equally dire. As Redditor u/zoobatron__ responded, «No Dumbledore definitely did not want Harry to compete but respected the rule of law in the situation that he had to compete (yeah I know the «he has to compete» thing is kind of silly). He knew someone wanting to cause Harry harm had put Harry’s name in and was trying to work out who it was.»

Other Redditors, like u/sT4ry_n1GhtS, did agree with the original poster, but had one reservation: how could Dumbledore have foreseen the fact that his Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson) was actually Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr. (David Tennant) all along, who was working behind the scenes for Voldemort? «I think you could be onto something, as in the books, it seems like [Dumbledore] was expecting this, but in the movies, he was very angry,» they wrote. «Or at least he appeared to be so. We already know he is a very good actor, so it could be likely. I just don’t see how he could have manipulated Barty [Crouch Jr.].»

Before the 2009 film’s release, IDW Publishing released a four-issue comic book series called «Star Trek: Countdown,» exploring the events that led Nero to get his revenge on the original Spock (Leonard Nimoy). As explained in «Star Trek,» Nero’s blind rage for the legendary Vulcan is born out of the destruction of Romulus, for which he holds Spock responsible. As captain of the mining vessel, the Narada, Nero and the rest of his crew shaved their heads and inked themselves as a sign of mourning for losing their home planet.

As explained in «Star Trek: Countdown #3,» a Romulan tradition during a time of loss saw mourners paint symbols onto their skin, and their gradual fading would signify the passing of the sorrow felt as their own life carried on without those who were lost. Nero and his crew, however, made the tattoos permanent, believing that their lives were over when they lost their home and family. As a result, the ink would never fade.

It’s an excellent little detail that «Trek» fans may only have been aware of if they snatched up the books before the film’s release. Also, along with «Star Trek: Picard,» which expanded on the untold truth of «Star Trek’s» Romulans and the failure of the planet being saved, it certainly paints an even stronger argument as to why Eric Bana’s Nero is the most dangerous villain in «Star Trek» history. 

In the deleted «Empire Strikes Back» scene, Luke hopes to tell Leia how he feels about her, only to have his emotional moment thwarted by R2-D2 and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). Unlike the kissing scene that made it into the final cut, the deleted moment was played off as genuine. It would have also set up a «will they, won’t they» among the trio, probably making it one of the strangest things about Princess Leia and Han Solo’s relationship. Luckily, plans for a love triangle were scrapped. 

The deleted moment and the kiss in the final cut are sort of harmless considering Luke and Leia weren’t always envisioned as siblings by George Lucas. While appearing at the Sci-Fi Expo in Plano, Texas, in 1999, former franchise producer Gary Kurtz revealed (via The Force.net) that the original plan was to have Luke’s sister be a new character (distinct from Leia) who was across the galaxy. By the time work started on «Return of the Jedi,» Lucas likely realized that it would be convenient to have Luke and Leia be siblings, as he could wrap up the trilogy and also create higher emotional stakes for the finale. 

While their kisses are definitely creepy, Luke and Leia never lock lips again after they find out they are siblings. So there is that. After the events of the original trilogy, Leia makes things official with Han Solo. Still, Luke and Leia’s smooch is definitely the worst kiss in «Star Wars» history, and for good reason.

Then there’s the issue of heavy CGI, a problem that’s affected pretty much all of the Disney live-action films — largely because they all contain magical, fantastical elements that work beautifully in classic Disney animation but can feel unsettling weird when made by a computer. (Take, for example, the live-action take on «The Lion King,» which often felt like a trip to the uncanny valley rather than an adventure near Pride Rock.)

In a different Variety «Actors on Actors» interview — this time with Halle Bailey, who faced her own backlash after being cast as Ariel in the live-action version of «The Little Mermaid» — Rachel Zegler admitted she was «nervous» about the movie’s CGI. 

«This is an iconic thing that people really care about,» Zegler told her contemporary of the «Snow White» film. «I don’t want to mess this up for anybody, including myself. The writers and [director] Marc Webb and our entire producing team…it’s a bit different story wise. We were able to do ‘Whistle While You Work,’ which made me really happy and excited. I was really nervous more about the technical element. That first-look image went out… and there’s a lot of CGI in the film.»

As Zegler told Bailey, filming «Whistle While You Work» felt bizarre because she was singing it to, well, nobody … although she knew Bailey would understand. «I’m sure you also know how that can be,» she said. «There was a lot of puppetry and CGI in post. It was really intense. There’s a lot of bSAIDD CRUZs of me tossing a broom and letting it fall to the ground because that’s apparently how you toss things off to CGI characters.» Ultimately, though, Zegler skewed positive once again: «But it’s so much fun!»

Taking an almost «Hook»-like approach to a section of the story in «Return to Labyrinth,» it’s revealed that since her story in «Labyrinth» ended, Sarah has forgotten all about her rescue mission during her teenage years. In the manga, she gets her memory jogged when Jareth returns after spending years posing as Toby’s high school counselor. Initially, Connelly’s character wasn’t planned to be a prominent player in the sequel. But, according to the editor, Tim Beedle, the popularity of the first volume led them to expand on a subplot between Sarah and the Goblin King.

«We had initially plotted this first arc to be three volumes, but since the sales for volume 1 were so good, I was able to get a fourth volume approved,» Beedle recalled in an interview with Muppet Balcony. «Therefore, we’ve expanded on a subplot featuring Jareth and Sarah—which is fitting, since the thing that most of the fans have been clamoring for is more Sarah and Jareth.»

The one downer, however, involves the fate of the film’s grumpy goblin with a heart of gold, Hoggle (voiced by Brian Henson in the movie). The manga confirms that Jareth fulfilled his promise of making him the Prince of the Bog of Eternal Stench after Sarah kissed him. Hoggle, who never wanted the gig, is understandably annoyed about the entire situation. Of course, there’s no telling if any of these plot details will make their way into the proposed film sequel, but at least there’s still a story that fans can get lost in if and until the second movie arrives in theaters.

With its 0% rating, the critical consensus for «Dark Places» on Rotten Tomatoes is predictably bleak, reading, «‘Dark Crimes’ is a rote, unpleasant thriller that fails to parlay its compelling true story and a committed Jim Carrey performance into even modest chills.»

Individual reviewers confirmed this consensus, like Owen Gleiberman at Variety, who wrote, «The film’s pace never deviates from its hushed, deliberate, anticipatory gaze – it’s stuck in thriller-foreplay mode.» At The New York Times, Ken Jaworowski agreed, saying, «A good story gets stuck in a puddle of mood in ‘Dark Crimes,’ a film that strays from its fascinating source – a real-life murder case – into a less successful attempt at noir.» Richard Roeper at the Chicago Sun-Times wanted better for the whole endeavor, but was left disappointed: «Source material with great dramatic potential. Talented director and screenwriter. Intriguing cast. That’s a promising menu – but the end product leaves a sour taste.»

At The AV Club, Ignatiy Vishnevetsky went after Carrey’s performance directly, saying, «A few words should be said about Carrey’s performance: It may be the worst dramatic acting of his career, a charmless cartoon of self-repression.» Ultimately, it was Johnny Oleksinski at The New York Post who had what might have been the cruelest assessment of the film: «That this exercise in vulgarity was made at all is shameful.»

Besides the talk of a prince who rarely appears and a heavenly castle to get to, one part of the theory argues, «After the Queen has made the poisoned apple and looks up the antidote that states ‘sleeping death can be revived only [by] love’s first kiss,’ she says with certainty, ‘There’s no fear in that!’» The Redditor continues, «She very clearly (supposedly) saw the Prince and Snow White together in the courtyard.» Might the queen have known the prince would never get to Snow White and that she merely imagined him finally coming to break the spell?

Redditor u/Typical_Humanoid argued against the idea, writing, «I don’t think the prince is imaginary. The dwarfs clearly reacted to him when he revived Snow and rode off with her,» which the original poster rebuffed, saying, «Are we sure that’s what really happened? Or was that a part of her imagination in the afterlife?» It certainly leaves room for thought during a magic-induced slumber. However, call us old fashioned, but the version that ends with a happily ever after is still our favorite. 

Perhaps this alteration could find its way into the upcoming remake of the classic fairy tale that’s being given the live-action treatment. James Gunn caused controversy when he reportedly fired Henry Cavill after taking over DC Studios. Since then, the «Guardians of the Galaxy» director has explained that he never fired Cavill, as the actor wasn’t hired to play Superman in the DC Universe in the first place. Furthermore, the character’s next big-screen adaptation promises to be completely different from Zack Snyder’s films.

Gunn’s film, which will fly into theaters in 2025, looks set to be all about a Superman who embodies peace, justice, and the American way. Details about the movie are scarce at the moment, but Gunn has teased characters who might show up in his «Superman.» Meanwhile, David Corenswet will portray Clark Kent as he navigates his Kryptonian heritage and superhero life on Earth.

Zack Snyder has also been busy since parting ways with DC. He’s currently focused on Netflix’s «Rebel Moon» franchise and probably won’t be short of projects to pursue afterward. Still, his unrealized ending to Superman’s story will go down in history as one of Hollywood’s big what-if stories.

Since they first appeared on-screen together in «X-Men Origins: Wolverine,» Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have had a friendly rivalry both in their personal lives and in the press. Particularly in the years of press for «Deadpool» and its sequels, Reynolds has taken any and all opportunity to rib Jackman regarding Wolverine, which has included following the Australian actor to his press tours for other movies, mocking the actor in-character in the «Deadpool» films, and both men playfully roasting each other via social media.

For example, in 2018, Reynolds and Jackman made fake political attack ads aimed at each other, subtly promoting «Once Upon a Deadpool,» a PG-13 recut of «Deadpool 2» released in theaters for the holidays, and Jackman’s «The Frontrunner.» They’ve also amped up their faux-conflict in promotional stints for their individual companies as well as birthday messages to each other on social media. 

With «Deadpool and Wolverine» on the horizon, this good-natured public war will likely ramp up in anticipation of the film’s release. Given how ruthless Deadpool has been in making fun of Wolverine (and Jackman) in the films, it’ll only get funnier to see him do it to the man’s face on the big screen. 

After «Tales of the Empire,» the Fourth Sister feels like a character with the potential to appear in other places and tell interesting stories. She has gone from a calloused agent of the Empire to someone disillusioned with the regime and seeking to make a difference to honor Barriss Offee’s memory. Suffice to say, she has come a long way from her «Obi-Wan Kenobi» appearances. Meanwhile, there are other Inquisitors in «Tales of the Empire» who don’t receive proper development in their previous «Star Wars» appearances, and, unfortunately, don’t make forward strides this time around.

First up is the still-unspecified Inquisitor (Clancy Brown), who makes a brief appearance in the episode «Devoted.» He previously popped up in the «Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi» episode «Resolve,» terrorizing a village before dueling and losing to Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein). His cool look and menacing presence immediately piqued fan interest in the character, but «Tales of the Empire» had no additional information to provide. Marrok (Paul Darnell) also appears in «Devoted» with absolutely nothing to do but blend in with the background. His biggest claim to fame remains appearing on «Ahsoka» and being killed by the title character in short order, continuing a «Star Wars» tradition of nerfing its coolest Sith.

As the Fourth Sister’s story begins to find its footing, time will tell if other poorly-handled Inquisitors like the Inquisitor and Marrok will get larger spotlights of their own down the line.
