It’s become something of a trend for modern movie musicals to hide the fact that they are musicals at all during the early marketing process. Though one may be able to learn this information if they closely follow the trades, casual consumers can be caught off guard. So, if you didn’t know this already, allow us to break the news to you: «Joker: Folie á Deux» is reportedly a full-blown musical set to classic pop standards. We feel like we need to tell you this, because the sequel’s trailer certainly doesn’t.
This peculiar marketing strategy isn’t new for Warner Bros., which kept the fact that 2023’s «Wonka» is a musical under wraps when promoting it. That same year, the studio released a new adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel «The Color Purple.» The trailer stated that it was based on the 1892 novel of the same name, but didn’t mention that the film is actually a remake the Broadway adaptation, only showing a few seconds of song. And this sneaky approach goes back even further than that.
In 2007, the studio released a highly-anticipated adaptation of the popular stage musical «Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.» Yet, despite the fact that every theater kid had been humming along to the richly grotesque score of the Stephen Sondheim masterpiece for years at that point, Warner Bros. perplexingly tried to market the film as a straightforward thriller. One can’t help but wonder why Warner Bros. keeps making musicals if it doesn’t even have the confidence to market them as such.
«Deadpool & Wolverine’s» Super Bowl teaser teased a huge Wolverine story coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when we saw the back of what looked to be Logan in a white dinner jacket. This hints at the appearance of Patch, an alias he uses while hiding out in Madripoor, a location that’s already been visited in «Falcon and the Winter Soldier.» Additionally, there has been more talk about other variations of Logan, including a wild rumor of Henry Cavill appearing as a Wolverine variant and whispers hinting at the arrival of Wolverinepool, an alleged variant for the upcoming Marvel threequel that’s a hybrid of our titular heroes.
If this version does indeed appear, it would make sense that both Wade and Logan are on a level playing field when they face these characters, particularly Wolverinepool. Does a duel with doppelgangers sound like the kind of confrontation Wolverine had in «Logan?» Certainly. Only this time, it’ll have more meta gags and probably more swearing. By then, we’ll hope that the two are the best of buds that best buds who hate each other can be, and their partnership gets put into bloody effect. We’ll have to wait and see how things turn out when the fresh chimichangas are dished up in «Deadpool & Wolverine,» which hits theatres on July 26.
In comic books, animated shows, video games, and live-action films, the relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn has often been one of abuse and neglect, with the Clown Prince of Crime being, quite literally, the world’s most toxic partner. In recent years, projects like Max’s «Harley Quinn» animated series and 2020’s critically-praised «Birds of Prey» have put the spotlight on the latter’s rise as a standalone antihero free from Joker’s sadistic clutches.
«Joker: Folie à Deux» has an opportunity to do something different. In most «Batman» stories, Joker is often seen as the corruptive force that seduces the good doctor Harleen Quinzel into a life of crime. In «Folie à Deux,» things do not have to be so straightforward. Given the events of the first film, what if Arthur Fleck has more or less become indifferent toward his past criminal actions, only for a new gaga (sorry) of an inmate urging him to embrace his chaotic persona once more? Or, following its uber-appropriate title, «Folie à Deux» could portray two delusional souls feeding into each other’s respective delusions.
No matter which route «Joker: Folie à Deux» goes with Joker and Harley Quinn’s relationship, there’s a strong chance it won’t be like anything fans have seen before.
Aside from the hint at Arthur Fleck’s Joker face paint, the small moment he shares with Harley Quinn at the end of the «Joker: Folie à Deux» trailer says a lot about each of them and their connection. Arthur spends much of the previous film seeking acceptance. From his peers, his mother (Frances Conroy), his neighbor, Sophia Dumond (Zazie Beetz), and society at large, he yearns for admiration and love. At long last, he seems to have found all of that in Harley. He sits up straighter and smiles when she speaks to him and asks him to embrace his Joker identity, showing a more vulnerable and human side than he does with most.
As for Harley, this scene speaks to just how head-over-heels she is for Arthur. She understands that the Joker isn’t a mere character for him. When he paints his face, he becomes his true self, and she doesn’t want him to hide it, especially not around her. Elsewhere in the trailer, she too dons makeup of her own, likely embracing a new, twisted persona akin to his. All in all, Arthur has done terrible things and will likely do more with Harley, who seems eager to cause havoc in her own right. Thus, sweet moments like this and their overall love story have a sinister side, as one would expect for this new take on the iconic and chaotic DC Comics couple.
Moviegoers can watch Arthur and Harley’s relationship flourish and see which of the biggest «Joker: Folie à Deux» fan theories come true when the film waltzes into theaters on October 4.
Overall, this is an inspired and totally on-point concept, filled with actors who could elevate the already expansive «X-Men» mythos. Plot details for this concept aren’t clear, though the creator does tease a fully realized vision by showing off key locations for the hypothetical film. The trailer starts with a meteor floating through space, before taking viewers to what looks like Magneto’s Asteroid M base, signaling that this a cosmic story in nature. It also seems like the concept is set in the Savage Lands and features an already successful team of X-Men, as there are various shots of the team’s many island bases. The posh Xavier Institute is also shown.
Based on the number of characters shown in the trailer, it’s fair to say that this «X-Men» flick would show the team already fully formed, ready to tackle Magneto and his motley crew of nefarious mutants. Other standouts in this concept include Julianne Moore as Jean Grey, replacing both Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner. An interesting addition to the roster is Leonardo DiCaprio as Ice Man.
Funnily enough, Green Goblin actor Willem Dafoe is brought on board as Toad, which is genuinely hilarious and perfect casting. The real showstopper, however, is Jim Carrey as Deadpool, which is all sorts of brilliant.
While a new «X-Men» flick is still a few years away, fans should check out «X-Men ’97,» which may change the future of Marvel mutants in the MCU.
Todd Phillips’ «Joker» may seem just about as standalone as any superhero — well, supervillain — movie can hope to be these days, but the sheer success of the film meant that it was just a matter of time before everyone involved jumped aboard the sequel train. Much like «Joker» took an unconventionally grounded «Taxi Driver» approach to the iconic supervillain’s origin story, its upcoming follow-up is set to venture in places where few comic book movies have gone before.
Instead of taking a straightforward approach and giving audiences a sequel in the same style as the original, Phillips is really changing things up. «Joker: Folie Á Deux» will not only be a jukebox musical featuring at least 15 cover songs in addition to a pair of originals, but it will significantly expand its take on the Joker mythos by introducing Arthur Fleck’s (Joaquin Phoenix) titular supervillain to Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga.
From its title to its genre choice, «Joker: Folie Á Deux» is gunning for some serious originality points — and based on its new trailer, it looks like the sequel will succeed on this front.
Joker: Folie Á Deux makes madness a shared hobby
Folie á deux is a term used to describe when multiple closely associated individuals suffer from similar mental health disorders. It’s also a perfectly fitting title for a movie that serves as Harley Quinn’s origin story in the same way «Joker» served as Joaquin Phoenix’s titular villain’s. The trailer for «Joker: Folie Á Deux» sets the mood for the things to come, showing that the particular place Arthur Fleck and his newfound romantic interest will occupy in the movie is a moody and strange one, indeed. It also makes it clear why test audiences have reportedly fallen in love with Lady Gaga’s version of the classic Batman villain.
«Joker: Folie á Deux» is slated to be released on October 4, 2024, which means that fans of Phoenix’s take on the character still have to wait a while before they see him interact with Gaga’s Harley Quinn. While it remains to be seen whether the sequel will be able to live up to the high standards set by «Joker,» this trailer suggests that the highly anticipated film will at the very least be worth the wait.
«Crisis» came out in February 2021. A month prior, allegations began to pour in, so it was definitely bad timing for everyone else who worked on the film. There’s a chance the controversy played a role in the movie being swept under the rug and grossing just over $1 million at the global box office. One more film would come out with Hammer playing a major role — 2022’s «Death on the Nile» — and later that year, the docuseries «House of Hammer» came out and made things worse for the actor.
Hammer wasn’t recast in the Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) murder mystery, but his presence in the movie was significantly downplayed. Hammer’s «Nile» co-star, Gal Gadot, responded to his controversies, referring to them as «very complex.» «Death on the Nile» was cursed pretty much all around, as it also starred Russell Brand, who espoused anti-vaccine beliefs and faced similar accusations of sexual assault in 2023. It’s enough problematic behavior to fill the Nile.
As of this writing, Hammer doesn’t have any upcoming projects lined up, seeing how he was dropped from virtually everything he was tentatively attached to when the allegations first surfaced. In May 2023, the sexual assault charges against Hammer were dropped, but it’s safe to say his reputation is forever tarnished. «Crisis» is one of the last things people can see from him, and it’s available to watch now on Netflix in certain countries.
If you or anyone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, help is available. Visit theRape, Abuse & Incest National Network websiteor contact RAINN’s National Helpline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).
What’s sure to be the most controversial aspect of «Civil War» is how it refuses to spell out all the details about how and why the war is happening. Some have pegged it as an «apolitical» movie because of this, but that’s not an accurate descriptor. There are more than enough context clues to figure out the «why» of the war, and while the «how» sometimes strains believability in the name of avoiding direct partisan parallels (the alliance between California and Texas somehow ends up easier to buy than some of its other big asks), the film’s not exactly taking a centrist stance about the political situation depicted either. What it is doing, however, is presenting this political situation from the perspective of journalists who are trying to stay objective for their job.
The main team of journalists we follow from New York to Washington, D.C. consists of two photographers, the veteran Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and newcomer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny of «Priscilla» fame), and two writers, Joel (Wagner Moura) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson). These people will go through Hell to get the big scoop. Whether or not their reporting makes a difference is up for question, but they all feel someone has to do it — that the third-term President (Nick Offerman) is actively hostile to journalists makes our protagonists’ determination to report on the fighting in D.C. and the oncoming end of the war all the more significant.
Dunst and Spaeny are great not only as actors but as photographers themselves — according to a post-screening Q&A, they actually took all the still photos shown in the film! The mentor-student relationship between Lee and Jessie, and the way Jessie steadily must desensitize herself to the horrors surrounding her in order to do what her hero does, is the most compelling character arc in the film, though Joel also undergoes his own subtler reckoning with journalistic ethics as his attempt to score an interview with the President transforms into a different sort of assignment as the war takes its turns.

Blackface isn’t something that happened decades ago and then stopped. There’s a tragically long list of modern media that utilize it, such as «The Office» needing to remove a controversial scene featuring a white actor with blackface. «The Office,» «30 Rock,» and many other shows have largely removed these episodes from streaming, but it’s still odd numerous creatives didn’t see a problem with it at the time. Billy Dee Williams is still okay with it, and many believe the Star Wars actor should probably stay out of this conversation.
X users, including @JohnHPiette, see it as the end of the line for the performer, writing «Welp … legendary run,» alongside a GIF of the Looney Tunes «That’s All Folks» title card. A similar attitude was shared by @bumm89176090: «With all due respect [please] Billy Dee sit this one out, sir. [Thanks].» In contrast, other people on social media love what Williams had to say, but looking at their profile pictures, it’s clear they belong to a demographic that really shouldn’t have an opinion on who should be allowed to use blackface. While Williams would sell his soul to appear in a Star Wars movie again, some people may not welcome him back if he does.
Blackface has a racist history dating back to the 19th century when white performers would portray despicable Black stereotypes. Such minstrel shows influenced the way white audiences viewed the Black population, and such harm can still be felt to this day. Aversion to blackface isn’t something caused by modern political correctness, either. A review of Laurence Olivier’s «Othello,» which Williams praised, was negatively likened to an «American minstrel show» by Bosley Crowther in 1966 in The New York Times.
The Riddler wasn’t the only villain from Batman’s rogues gallery that was passed on at some point in the Dark Knight trilogy. In 2008, «Batman Begins» screenwriter David S. Goyer explained to Digital Spy he wanted to use characters who hadn’t been in live-action before, which is why Liam Neeson’s Ra’s Al Ghul and Cillian Murphy’s Scarecrow are the primary antagonists. Goyer specifically mentioned Catwoman and Penguin as villains he didn’t want to use right away, given their extensive history of appearances. Meanwhile, «The Dark Knight» landed on the Joker nearly from the get-go, as the iconic Clown Prince of Crime was a no-brainer to be the main antagonist in the sequel
In «The Dark Knight Rises,» Catwoman, played by Anne Hathaway, debuts in the universe. However, Bane’s inclusion wasn’t what the studio initially wanted. According to Goyer, Warner Bros. wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to play the Riddler in the film, but the writer rebuffed the suggestion. Although, considering Jonathan Nolan mentions the Riddler was under serious consideration, it’s safe to assume there was ample discussion about a potential role for the villain — even if Goyer didn’t want to see it happen.

Jackie Chan didn’t confirm which movie his new look is for, but it’s worth noting that he’ll reprise the role of Mr. Han in an upcoming «Karate Kid» movie co-starring Ralph Macchio. Han is very reminiscent of the wise and gray Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) from the franchise’s original three films, and he’s probably aged since we last saw him in the 2010 «Karate Kid» reboot. Han is also a man of great wisdom, and gray hair would provide a way of visually enhancing this element of his personality.
Of course, Chan has plenty of other projects in the works and shows no signs of giving up the types of adrenaline-pumping roles he’s known for. In addition to «The Karate Kid,» fans can look forward to seeing him in action comedies like «Rush Hour 4,» «Panda Plan,» and «New Police Story 2.» He’s bound to throw some fists and kick people in those flicks, which should put to bed any lingering doubts some people might have about his health.

Without diving deep into spoilers, «Glass» is a superhero «team-up» film that is a sequel to both M. Night Shyamalan’s «Unbreakable» and «Split.» When the latter was released in 2017, audiences were unaware that the James McAvoy horror pic was a stealth follow-up to «Unbreakable,» which features Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson as dueling superpowered beings. «Glass» functions as the final installment in the director’s Eastrail 177 trilogy and brings characters from the previous two films together.
«Unbreakable» was a major play for Shyamalan and Willis upon release, as it reunited the duo shortly after they made «The Sixth Sense.» Both «Unbreakable» and «Glass» are two of Willis’ most popular movies, and are must-watches for fans of the action maverick. Viewers shouldn’t just dive right into «Glass,» however. People should watch its two predecessors first to appreciate Willis’ performance and Shyamalan’s world-building fully. «Unbreakable» can be streamed on Max, while «Split» can be watched with a Netflix subscription.
While «Glass» is a critical flop, it’s worth watching, as it’s one of Willis’ final major roles before he retired. Willis’ health status and condition rapidly changed in 2022 when he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. «Glass» is one of the few mainstream theatrical films that the «Die Hard» star took on before he wrapped up his time as an actor.
«Happy Gilmore’s» surge in popularity on Netflix follows the announcement that a sequel is in the works. Speaking on «The Drew Barrymore Show,» the titular host — who starred alongside Sandler in «50 First Dates» and «Blended» — confirmed she got the update from a credible source, possibly even the man himself.
«This just in: I have breaking news. I’ll just say this from my source: It is in process. There is a process, and that process is in process,» Barrymore said after receiving a text message from someone she knows who has inside information. Barrymore admitted she was in contact with Sandler throughout the show, so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out he’s the one who shared the info with her.
Of course, it’s better to hear information directly from the primary source, so it’s good to know that Sandler himself has also said that «Happy Gilmore 2» is shaping up. While he hasn’t shared any details about the story, he told «The Dan Patrick Show» that he’s collaborating with Tim Herlihy on the sequel and that Netflix is excited about the project. Given that the first movie is ruling the charts, the streamer is undoubtedly looking forward to making the sequel.
The fact that the incident had left Sirtis with a huge hole in her uniform — not to mention one heck of a fright — didn’t save her from getting snapped at for ruining the take. It also meant the set would have to be quickly rebuilt, forcing everyone to stick around for another five hours, which Sirtis said made her the target of everyone’s ire for the evening. When the reshoot finally came around, Sirtis was understandably nervous. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 1994, she said, «On the next take, I went over to the chair, and in what [was supposed to be] a life-or-death situation, I stopped and wiped down the seat. It gave [the crew] a good laugh.» She’d also had to remind the frustrated director that they could cut that part from the film.
While the good-spirited Sirtis was able to find humor in the experience, it was a frustrating exclamation point on another example of Hollywood’s mistreatment of women. Recalling her excitement after discovering Troi would finally get her chance at the helm, Troi told Dublin Comic Con that she called up her best friend Michael Dorn (Worf). «I said Dorny! Dorny! I get to drive the Enterprise!» But her enthusiasm had waned when she got to the script’s ending.
Listing some of the people who got a chance to captain before Troi, Sirtis lamented, «The first bloke — it was the blind dude … then it was the child. Then it was pretty much any chick in red who happened to be passing.» And until Troi got behind the wheel, Sirtis noted, the Enterprise came out just fine. «Never a scratch on it until Troi got to drive!» she laughed. «To be fair, that planet just came out of nowhere.»
It’s easy to imagine the suave and confident Lewis Hamilton stepping into the shoes of one of the pilots in «Top Gun: Maverick.» But ultimately, the racer never got the opportunity to cement his friendship with Tom Cruise on the big screen. Those initial chats about starring in «Maverick,» however, seemed to help Hamilton secure his next gig.
He’ll be starring in and producing Joseph Kosinski and Brad Pitt’s untitled racing film for Apple TV+. Set in the world of Formula One racing, the film reunites «Top Gun: Maverick» director Kosinski with franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The duo asked Hamilton to join the film and help ensure its authenticity, something that excites the driver. «I felt my job really has been to try to call BS […] Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not,» he told GQ. While he missed out on Cruise’s flick, Hamilton could potentially be responsible for another cinematic classic. Details are slim but hopefully, the film can make box office history like «Top Gun: Maverick.»
Seeing as Hamilton already has a working relationship with Kosinski and Bruckheimer and a friendship with Cruise, it’s possible that he could still have a shot at the upcoming «Top Gun 3,» which is in the works at Paramount.
