Did the Hyatt Regency in Maui burn down?

No, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa did not burn down in the blaze.

Like many of the island’s biggest resorts, the hotel is located in Kaanapali, around three miles north of the centre of Lahaina.

A Facebook page called Maui 24/7 confirmed that the wildfires did not go beyond the Lahaina Civic Center, which is around a six-minute drive from the resort.

An evacuation operation began in Kaanapali on Friday night (August 11) after a new fire began burning on the island. However, it has now been contained.

The Maui Police Department confirmed this on Facebook, writing: “Per MFD, fire is 80% controlled. No further evacuations are being conducted.”

They had previously announced: “As of this posting, there is a fire in West Maui, residents in the Kaanapali are currently being evacuated.”

Hyatt Regency issues update

The Hawaii resort has released a statement on its website stating that the “safety and wellbeing of our guests and colleagues is always a top priority”.

“In response to the wildfire situation that originated in Lahaina, Maui, Hyatt Regency Maui has implemented emergency preparedness procedures in an effort to ensure the safety and security of our guests and colleagues,” they said.

Hyatt confirmed the resort is closed to arrivals and not accepting guests until August 17. Any deposits and prepayments for cancelled stays on these dates, including prepaid rates, will be refunded.

“Our thoughts are with members of the Hyatt Regency Maui family and Maui community. Our team is actively working to assess the level of impact. Any additional questions should be directed to local authorities,” the hotel concluded.

The newly renovated 810-room resort is set on 40 oceanfront acres of Maui’s Kaanapali Beach and has on-site luau, restaurants, activities and a water slide.

The whole area has no power

While the resort wasn’t directly impacted by the flames, the area of Kaanapali lacks power or communication services following the blaze.

In an interview with Today, Maui’s mayor Richard Bisson said the whole west side of Maui has no power, water, internet or phone signal.

Hawaiian Electric crews are currently focusing on starting critical damage assessments to begin restoration efforts once areas are safe and accessible.

“We are asking West Maui customers without power to prepare for extended outages that could last for several weeks in some areas,” they said.
