Humans can supposedly hear the difference between hot and cold water being poured just by the sound it makes, and someone on TikTok has set up an experiment to prove the science behind it.

A viral TikTok video executed a fun experiment to prove this scientific fact and many social media viewers are pleasantly surprised by the outcome when they correctly guessed the difference between hot and cold water.

Viral TikTok proves you can hear the difference between hot and cold water

According to scientific information, humans can recognize the difference between hot and cold water being poured just by the sounds they make.

A TikTok creator named @curedeggyolk set up the scientific demonstration in a video explaining this fact with two glasses in front of the camera – separately filling one glass with hot water and the other with cold.

@curedeggyolk challenged viewers to close their eyes and listen to the different sounds of each glass of water being poured, before instructing people to watch the video again with open eyes to see the evidence.

Aside from spreading the fun science fact, the TikToker’s viral video was also a smart creator move as it essentially doubles the viewing count for the clip.

The viral video has currently reached more than 25 million views, over 2.4 million likes, and a comment section full of surprise and shock as most people seem to have guessed correctly.

Science behind hot and cold water sound difference explained

The reason humans can hear a difference between hot and cold water is all down to the frequency of the sound, as Small Screen Science reports.

There are three sources of sound during pouring; the resonance of the air, the vibration of the container and water as a whole, and the water sounds (including bubbles).

Hot and cold water both produce these same frequencies but with different strengths – when cold water is poured the dominant sound is the vibration of the container and water, whereas when hot water is poured the resonance of the air is the dominant sound.

Put simply, cold water is several times more viscous than hot water so while they produce the same sound frequency when poured they do it at different strengths, as per Lad Bible reports.

TikTok viewers’ pleasantly surprised reactions

Within the comment section of the popular TikTok video are many viewers who were surprised to have guessed the difference between hot and cold water correctly.

One TikTok comment suggested: “The hot one sounds wompy and the cold one sounds clinky if that makes sense.”

@Rachel Jane commented: “As a British person the first one sounded like you making a cup of tea and the second a glass of juice.”

A user named @PineTree248 wrote: “This may be weird but warm water sounds soft and cold water sounds hard.”

Similarly, @Tay agreed: “Definitely can hear the difference… Hot one sounds softer… Cold one sounds crisp if that makes any sense to anyone else.”
