A snake was ‘killed’ during Friday the 13th filming according to special effects artist

Millions of TikTok users are only now learning what appears to be the true story behind the infamous snake scene from the 1980 horror classic, Friday The 13th.

Now over 40 years out from its release, Friday The 13th continues to be one of the most iconic horror movies of all time, with first-time and repeat viewers continuing to stream it in high numbers to this day. But one rather disturbing scene has once again gone viral as a host of new social media users learn the supposed truth behind the brutal moment involving Alice, Bill and a rather unfortunate snake.

Friday The 13th fans have always wondered about that snake scene

For those who can’t remember the scene that has sparked uproar online, essentially, a seemingly innocent snake is butchered by a machete-wielding Bill, who has been called upon for help by a terrified Alice after she sees the elusive creator sliding underneath her cabin bed.

While the most brutal scenes in the horror flick are obviously those that contain the killings of various humans, there is something rather jarring about the way the snake is chopped to bits – which is perhaps why so many people can still remember it 40 years later.

Though most viewers assumed that the snake was some kind of prop or the result of some rather impressive special effects, there have always been some murmurings about how maybe the snake wasn’t really an outcome of some clever CGI work.

Given that animal cruelty laws were less stringent in the late 70s when the movie was shot, some people have long assumed that the producers of Friday The 13th may have used an actual live snake, and it looks like they may have been right after all.

Special effects icon appears to confirm a real snake died

Taking to Twitter on Friday 13, May 2022 the same week the movie turned 42, the movie’s special effects and makeup technician Tom Savini appeared to confirm the snake theory.

“Fact: I was not on set the day the snake was killed,” he tweeted, suggesting that a real snake was in fact killed during the making of the movie.

The tone of Savini’s post suggests that had it been up to him, he would have fashioned some form of prosthetic animal in order to spare the life of the real snake you can see slithering haplessly around the 20-second mark in the movie’s trailer:

TikTok users are devastated to learn about the snake

There is also a rather widespread theory that suggests that the snake was actually killed against its handler’s will. According to reports, the snake handler was “inconsolable” after the animal was butchered and had to be held back by members of the team.

Needless to say, the people of TikTok are less than happy about this story, and in a video that has quickly racked up over one million views this week, horror fans on the app let their feelings about Snakegate be heard.

“Omg please tell me he sued or something but that doesn’t bring the baby back” wrote one distraught user. “I love my snake so much I can’t imagine” they added.

Another angry commenter added: “As a snake owner who would die for my snakes I would have been SWINGING”, while somebody else wrote: “I wish I had never learned this because all I can imagine now is the handler being devastated and it hurts so bad”.
