‘AITA for calling my wife manipulative’ is twisted

Users think the husband who asked ‘AITA for calling my wife manipulative’ offered a twisted narrative to make his wife the culprit.

The 2020 post has attracted the opinions of Redditers once again after it was re-posted to TikTok and even years later, people are convinced the husband is to blame in the situation.

The husband says his wife is overdramatic and her reaction to nearly everything is “exaggerated”. She would bawl her eyes over a sad scene in the movies or while sharing some sad experience from her own life.

The couple was meeting with their friends when the wife began to tell their friends a story with some details which the husband thought were made up.

He says he corrected his wife before his friends, but she simply brushed it off as something she does to make her stories more edgy and they aren’t always accurate.

But, the husband was still bothered by it and brought it up again with his wife once their friends left. The wife said she didn’t want to talk about it as they had already discussed it. The husband was irked by his wife’s response and they ended up bickering about it.

Husband’s reaction made the wife pull away

The husband blamed his wife for “manipulating” her way out of every conversation by simply crying and becoming extremely emotional.

She was taken aback by his remark and asked him if he meant what he said through shuttered breathing. The husband said she does twist the narrative of any argument by playing the victim.

The wife locked herself in their room as she wanted to “calm down” and told her husband a couple of hours later that she will stop being manipulative.

The Reddit user says the issue didn’t really resolve at this because his wife has become emotionally distant. She has since stopped watching movies that would make her sad, she doesn’t talk to him the way she used to and comes across as a different person if he’s around when they are with their friends.

When the husband confronted his wife, she told him she didn’t want to “manipulate” him anymore, hence she had grown distant. When the husband said that her “everyday crying wasn’t manipulative”, the wife responded: “So it’s only manipulative when you’re mad at me”

She even refused to watch her favorite movie with him and isn’t willing to accept his apology.

Users think the wife is not in the wrong

Reddit users have argued in favor of the wife, for her husband’s reaction to her true self made her shut down completely. Many have called out the Reddit user for being insensitive and manipulative.

One opined: “For some people, crying isn’t a choice, it’s a physiological reaction they can’t stop. I understand it can feel manipulative on the other side of it, but sometimes it truly can’t be helped”

“Some of you are calling her manipulative in the comments are missing the fact that she isn’t pulling up tears just any time they’re arguing, she genuinely cries about anything in movies, books etc. You can call that annoying or frustrating sure but she’s very clearly not being manipulative,” said another.

A third comment read: “YTA for making you wife shut down completely. When you humiliate someone for expressing themselves, you can do a lot of damage, especially to their ability to trust you or anyone else.”
