A post called ‘AITA for taking my niece to court over a coat’ has left everyone on Reddit fuming at a disrespectful teenager.
It’s from the site’s ‘Am I the a**hole?’ thread where people ask whether they were in the wrong in certain situations.

‘AITA for taking my niece to court over a coat’
The Reddit post begins with a 28-year-old woman explaining that she has a 16-year-old niece who is her sister’s only child.
Two years ago, the writer married a wealthy man and his mother gifted her a coat worth more than $20,000 last Christmas.
The woman didn’t know quite how expensive it was, thinking it was perhaps $3,000 at most, but her niece told her the real value.
“She googled the brand and showed me how much it really was. I won’t lie, I didn’t wear it after that because I was afraid of ruining it,” she wrote.
However, the woman wore it last week while visiting her sister and just before leaving, felt something splat on her back.
Her niece then started “cackling” and she quickly realised she had splattered paint all over her expensive coat.
“I was so pissed off while she was not apologetic at all. Her mom screamed at her and said she was grounded. Then she said she will pay for the dry cleaning,” the Reddit user wrote.
Aunt takes legal action over ruined coat
On her way home, she got an alert that the 16-year-old had posted an Instagram reel of her doing the paint prank.
“I’m going to hit my aunt’s $20k coat with a paint filled balloon to see how she reacts,” the video said.
She instantly sent it to the teen’s mother and said a week’s grounding isn’t enough. By then, she had already taken the video down.
The next day, the writer found out that her coat couldn’t be saved so called her sister and said her daughter had to pay it back.
“We got into an argument and she said that they will not be paying it, and if I wanted a new one, I should get my husband to buy it for me.”
The writer thinks they should sell her niece’s car to pay back the money, but the mother is refusing to do so.
She told her sister she would be suing and reminded her that she has video evidence of the teen doing it “on purpose for online clout”.

Reddit users fuming at disrespectful teen
People on Reddit supported the writer in the comments, agreeing that she’s not the a**hole and slamming the teenager.
One person wrote: “NTA. She ruined a $20k coat. She wasn’t even apologetic.”
“She did it expressly to hurt her aunt and has no remorse. This is just the consequences of actions,” another said.
A third person added: “Time to file criminal charges. And I would also sue her for the value of the coat. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
“They can afford it by selling the niece’s car. That’s the punishment she deserves. She caused it, she pays,” someone else commented.
