As the talk went on, Keira Knightley, who has done nude scenes in movies like «Domino,» «The Jacket,» and the more recent film, «Colette,» reiterated that there were just certain kinds of nude scenes that she was not interested in. «I don’t want it to be those horrible sex scenes where you’re all greased up, and everybody is grunting,» the performer said. «I’m not interested in doing that.»

Still, Knightley respects that there are some moments in movies and television where the addition of nude scenes can be worthwhile. «Saying that, there are times where I go, ‘Yeah, I completely see where this sex would be really good in this film, and you basically just need somebody to look hot,’ so, therefore, you can use somebody else,» the actor mused.

Still, there’s another, more personal reason why the actor isn’t as interested in baring it all onscreen these days. «Because I’m too vain, and the body has had two children now, and I’d just rather not stand in front of a group of men naked,» she explained. Given the way that actors have spoken out about not wanting to do these sorts of scenes for a variety of reasons in recent years, it seems likely that Knightley’s fans will continue to support her, whether she decides to return to nude scenes one day or not.

According to the production notes for «Argylle,» Dua Lipa was looking to get into the world of acting when the opportunity to appear in Matthew Vaughn’s high-octane, twist-filled spy actioner came about. «I was excited but nervous because I had never done anything like this before,» said the former model and «Levitating» hitmaker.

While many singers have successfully made the transition to acting, there was no guarantee that Dua Lipa would have the skills necessary to take on the craft herself. When asked if he was able to provide her with any help or insight on set, her scene partner Henry Cavill answered in a more philosophical way about the collaborative nature of acting itself.

«Well, I think regardless of anyone’s experience, whether they’re very experienced or not, you’re all there to help one another anyway,» the former star of «Man of Steel» and «The Witcher» told Looper. «If you’re having a good day or a bad day, it doesn’t really matter. You’re there to support, because that’s what we do. We’re all playing characters and throwing storytelling at one another, so we can respond. She doesn’t need any help. She’s fantastic.»

Whether Dua Lipa’s two relatively minor appearances in «Argylle» and «Barbie» lead to bigger and juicier roles for the vivacious singer remains to be seen, but if she can conquer the world of acting the way she has conquered pop music, she’ll have audiences levitating in movie theaters around the world.

Following «Predator,» Carl Weathers tried his hand at leading his own action movies, to mixed results. He had a good start with «Action Jackson» in 1988, one of the decade’s most underrated action movies, but his 1992 effort «Hurricane Smith» didn’t fare quite as well. There he played a similar gun-toting hero, but the failure of the film wasn’t just at the box office, because Weathers also suffered a serious mishap during production in Australia that shattered a tooth.

«In the final sequence, Hurricane Smith runs toward a helicopter fleeing with our heroine, and makes a grab for the skid,» said director Colin Budds, as relayed by FilmInk. «The steel skid was suspended from a crane, and Carl enthusiastically hurled himself upward, driving his front teeth into the unforgiving skid.» According to Budds, the hit smashed up at least one front tooth, snapping it cleanly in two. Budds described Weathers’ reaction to the incident as a «meltdown» and said he grew weary when Weathers wanted to head back to the U.S. for treatment. «He was immediately organizing flights back to a specialist in Los Angeles,» he said. «We had freeways, electricity, and spoke approximately the same language, but clearly we didn’t have advanced dental care.»

Reason eventually prevailed, however, and Budds was able to coax his star to stay in the country and see a local dentist Budds was familiar with. «About two hours later, and with that perfect smile restored,» he said, «he declared my dentist a genius.»

Fans’ jaws collectively dropped upon seeing the post-credits scenes in 2021’s «Venom: Let There Be Carnage» and «Spider-Man: No Way Home.» In both sequences, Tom Hardy’s Venom is seen interacting with the world of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, first watching the webhead on a news report and later disappearing from Peter Parker’s universe once Dr. Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell is reversed, leaving behind a piece of the Venom symbiote. 

While we have yet to see if either «Venom 3» or a fourth MCU Spider-Man entry will follow up on these significant multiversal moments, it appears that Marvel is more interested in keeping the symbiote in the mix instead of its infamous harborer. Nevertheless, Tom Hardy remains optimistic that the two iconic comic rivals will cross paths, saying in an Esquire interview, «Should both sides be willing, and it be beneficial to both sides, I don’t see why it couldn’t be. I hope and strongly, with both hands, push, eagerly, towards that potential, and would do anything to make that happen, within what’s right in business. But it would be foolish not to head towards the Olympic Games if you were running 100 meters, so yeah! I want to play on that field.»

Based on its mediocre $18 million opening weekend, it’s fair to say «Argylle» just doesn’t have the momentum needed to cross its reported $200 million-plus budget. Numbers vary across several different sources, but the consensus seems to suggest that $200 million is the minimum budget for the star-studded affair. There might be some truth to that number, as Deadline says Apple bought the rights for the pic for $200 million back in 2021. Over the last few years, several films have failed thanks in part to their bloated budgets, which put considerable expectations on films to overperform. 

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the box office hasn’t fully rebounded, and the industry hasn’t hit the same highs it boasted in 2018. The numbers show that audiences aren’t showing up to cinemas as much as they used to, which means production budgets need to be managed to reign in expectations. On paper, it’s a great idea for Apple to pay $200 million for a flick that features heavyweights like John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Henry Cavill, and pop sensation Dua Lipa — but none of these stars are actual box office draws. In an era where star power is only reserved for the likes of Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, and Tom Cruise, it’s difficult to see where the money was spent, especially when one considers the film’s poor use of CGI. 

Despite the reported $200 million price tag, which has consistently been maintained by trades, Matthew Vaughn has contested that number, telling Deadline that the pic didn’t cost that much. «I don’t know how you spend $200 million on it,» he told the outlet. «I actually don’t. Unless you’re going to make a five-hour CG fest.» 

It’s sort of surprising that «Pirates of the Caribbean 6» hasn’t hit the big screen. The franchise has always been a moneymaker for Disney, with the fifth film making north of $790 million despite mixed-to-negative reviews. The premise presented in the trailer is fascinating and would be an interesting way to continue the franchise while passing the torch to a new generation. Over the last few years, Ortega’s clout has only grown — thanks to appearances in projects like «Scream,» «X,» and the Netflix sensation «Wednesday.» 

Having Ortega lead the franchise would be a brilliant move and it pleased many fans already. «Whoever thinks of this is legit genius. If Disney did this it will be a massive hit. Jenna Ortega as daughter really suit[s] the movie,» wrote YouTuber user @mariaa5887. Similar sentiments were echoed by user @KingDami1999 who wrote, «This is a great trailer. Jenna being Jack’s daughter is a nice idea.» According to user @CarlaLR74, the flick would light up the box office, suggesting, «These two would rock as a father-daughter pirate duo. Disney, want to save your box office, make this happen.»

While it’s possible that the fan-made video, which boasts over 2.5 million viewers could compel Disney to cast Ortega, the studio might have other plans for the billion-dollar franchise. 

Even when you consider that he physically removed himself from society and referred to the sequels as «damnation to come,» Jamie Dornan did open up about whether or not he wishes he’d never done the «Fifty Shades» movies at all, and the answer might be somewhat surprising. He did say that he still feels like reviews of projects he’s done since playing Christian Grey feel like they have to mention the franchise. «I have just had very glowing reviews for recent work and there wouldn’t be many of them that don’t mention ‘Fifty Shades’ in them,» Dornan admitted. «A lot of reviews are like, ‘He’s great, but lest we forget when he wasn’t great…’» Does he truly regret appearing in the movies, though? He does not; as he put it, «But regrets that I did them, no.»

Dornan’s co-star, Dakota Johnson, has also addressed the fact that while the «Fifty Shades» movies will follow her everywhere, she doesn’t fully regret them because they did give her career quite a boost. In 2021, Johnson was asked if she regretted the movies, and answered thusly: «[The regret] comes in waves. But this project is not going to be my swan song. It has put my life on a path that I didn’t plan to go down, but I do feel proud of it. And the films have allowed me to do so many different projects and travel so much. In the end, ‘Fifty Shades’ has plopped me in a world that I really wanted to be in.»

As a newcomer to the Corleone family Diane Keaton’s Kay Adams is the closest «The Godfather» comes to having an audience surrogate. The role is a deceptively simple one; Kay is a fish out of water, and she lacks the earthy mystique of Michael’s first wife, Apollonia. Yet it is an arresting shot of Keaton’s face that closes the chapter on «The Godfather» and cements Michael’s criminal ascendance.

Fifty years after the film’s release, Keaton took to Instagram Stories to ask Coppola, «Why on Earth did you choose me for the Godfather?!» (via X). The director replied, «I chose you, because although you were to play the more straight/vanilla wife, there was something about you, deeper, funnier, and very interesting. (I was right).»

Prior to «The Godfather,» Keaton was primarily known for her stage work, including a role in the original 1968 production of «Hair.» That, too, played a part in Coppola’s casting decision. «I was invited by Fred Astaire to accompany him to see ‘Hair’ which he couldn’t make ‘hide nor hair’ out of,» Coppola continued. «You were in it, and I remember your beautiful singing voice.»

Like her co-stars, Keaton’s career took off after «The Godfather,» and that decade became defined by her collaborations with Woody Allen, including 1977’s «Annie Hall.» Beginning in the ’80s, she became a muse to Nancy Meyers. Other notable roles include «Reds,» «Marvin’s Room,» and «The Family Stone.»

At 78, Keaton is showing no signs of slowing. She’ll appear next in «Arthur’s Whisky» and the upcoming comedy «Summer Camp.»

Hercules and Aladdin have a far more direct link in the «Hercules» episode «Hercules and the Arabian Night,» which came out in 1999. The plot kicks off when Hades (James Woods) and Jafar (Jonathan Freeman) team up and go after the other villain’s enemy. This leads to the two heroes having to team up to take down their nemeses. It’s one of the more memorable episodes from the series, even if it creates a plot hole within the «Hercules» movie.

The «Hercules» series serves as a midquel of sorts to the movie, focusing on the titular character’s training with Phil (Danny DeVito), which was mostly montaged in the film. At this point in time, Hades believes Hercules to be dead, but on «Hercules and the Arabian Night,» he tells Jafar to strike the demigod while he’s training with Phil. Hades shouldn’t have known Hercules was still a threat to him at that point, so he’d have no reason to tell Jafar to go after the kid.

There are also timeline issues with the Hercules and Aladdin crossover. Granted, these are fictional stories and myths, but «Aladdin» co-director John Musker once revealed to E! News that the original treatment for the Disney movie explicitly set the story in Baghdad, Iraq, which was founded in the 8th century AD (throwing cold water on the «Aladdin» fan theory saying the film could be set in a post-apocalyptic future). Meanwhile, «Hercules» takes place in Ancient Greece, which would be closer to roughly 500 BCE. The two characters are likely separated by centuries and shouldn’t have been able to interact. Of course, this is thinking too deeply about a silly crossover. It’s all in good fun to see Hercules and Aladdin be buddies … somehow.

While the first «John Wick» flick is relatively low-key, subsequent pics in the action franchise became globe-trotting adventures, taking the hitman to Italy, Tokyo, Morocco, and France, just to name a few. Because the Continental network is international, it’s hard not to imagine Lionsgate not wanting to capitalize on the franchise’s momentum by giving it localized iterations. Perhaps these artificial intelligence-made images can help compel them.

Consider the image of a Russian John Wick, trading in his traditional suit for a heavy jacket and beanie, protecting him from the country’s infamous winters. That version of the character is even wearing aviators — making him one of the coolest out of the bunch. Another version of the character is imagined as Jamaican, with the hitman boasting dreadlocks. The possibilities are absolutely endless to take this franchise to every corner of the world. Plans are already in place for «Ballerina,» a spin-off flick featuring Ana de Armas as a ballerina out for revenge.

One version of the character that we definitely want to see is a Chinese John Wick. That iteration of the character from the Middle Kingdom is wearing a blood-red suit that’s adorned with traditional Chinese imagery and symbolism. Or how about an Irish John Wick, who is seen sporting a bright green suit? Seeing as UFC icon and native Irishman Conor McGregor is making his cinematic debut with «Road House,» one can’t help but imagine how the fighter would excel in the franchise.

Before «Star Trek: The Next Generation» began its syndicated run in the late 1980s, the cast of the classic «Star Trek» series moved into the feature film realm. For seven films, William Shatner’s James T. Kirk commandeered the Starship Enterprise on the big screen, with the seventh being his and his crew’s final voyage.

By 1994, it was time for the original «Star Trek» cast to hand over the reins of the franchise to the cast of «The Next Generation,» since the follow-up series was coming to an end. The result was a crossover movie — «Star Trek: Generations» — where most of the classic «Star Trek» cast co-starred along with their «Next Generation» successors. The film was a definitive change of guard, especially when it came to Shatner passing the baton to Patrick Stewart via Kirk’s death in the film.

Naturally, Shatner and Stewart were featured in scenes together, which the «TNG» star admitted to being a bit apprehensive about at first. In «Making it So,» the actor recalled how Shatner appeared cold toward the newer show, claiming in press interviews that he watched little of the series. Instead, working with Shatner on «Star Trek: Generations» ended up being a pleasant surprise.

«Bill was a pleasure to work with, open and generous, and his death scene is moving,» Stewart wrote. «In the film, Picard and Kirk team up to foil a plan by the movie’s villain, Tolian Soran, who was played by Malcolm McDowell, a long way from his days as a Royal Shakespeare Company walk-on background actor.» In the end, the pair worked together to stop Soran’s diabolical plans, with Shatner’s Kirk making «the ultimate sacrifice» and leaving Picard as the Enterprise’s sole captain.

Abundant theories exist regarding Yoda’s mysterious manner of speaking. Given the character’s iconography, the creators of the small but mighty Jedi master are no strangers to getting asked this question and have their own reasons for the unique creative decision.

According to an interview with George Lucas in the Paul Duncan book «Star Wars Archives. 1977-1983,» the filmmaker created the quirky speech pattern as a way of keeping Yoda’s bizarre alien origins intact while having the audience in mind. «I didn’t want to go through a whole movie where everybody’s reading subtitles, he had a lot of dialogue,» Lucas explained. «So I had to come up with a language that was alien but still understandable, so I reversed everything around. The language was designed to make you focus on the boring philosophical lessons.» It’s safe to say that this tactic worked, as Yoda’s many moments of enlightenment remain ingrained into the minds of viewers who grew up watching the original «Star Wars» trilogy. 

This key characteristic was brought into discussion when Dave Filoni and company were preparing to give Yaddle her speaking debut in «Tales of the Jedi,» where she is voiced by Bryce Dallas Howard. However, in an interview with Nerdist, Filoni recalled a conversation he had with Yoda’s original voice actor and puppeteer, Frank Oz, whose reasoning behind Yoda’s speech isn’t far off from the aforementioned fan theory. «Frank Oz told me once that Yoda speaks that way specifically in honor of his own master,» Filoni shared. «That was what he had thought about it. I try to keep moving forward [with] these thoughts.» Yoda may be a Jedi, but few can argue that Oz is the master when it comes to official word on the character’s backstory.

Since we’re enjoying a little speculation, why not speculate a little bit more? Let’s pretend that Will Ferrell was totally on board to give Buddy the Elf his full story arc in the same way that Mark Ruffalo gave the Incredible Hulk an MCU «trilogy» via the backdoor in other properties. It would make Ferrell’s reaction to the official attempt at an «Elf 2» even funnier. 

During a 2021 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell admitted to turning down a sequel to the film that made his career because he disliked the script provided. «I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money,’» said Ferrell. «And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.’»

For Ivan Mars’ TikTok theory to work, then Ferrell needs to believe that connecting «Elf» to «The Lego Movie» to «Barbie» is a better idea than rehashing his first Christmas film. And that just seems like a lot of emotional and physical labor for someone who signed on for «Holmes & Watson.»

The first three «Mad Max» movies are a clear trilogy, following the eponymous Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) as he descends from highway patrol officer to grizzled wasteland wanderer. As with many film franchises, the best way to watch the movies is in the order they were released.

In the original «Mad Max» timeline (more on that in a second), «The Road Warrior,» also known simply as «Mad Max 2,» takes place just a couple of years after the first movie. A nuclear war occurs in the aftermath of the second film, leading into the events of «Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.» However, this order of events has been altered a bit in recent years, with a tie-in comic for «Fury Road» retconning things and placing the nuclear holocaust just before the start of «The Road Warrior» instead.

«Fury Road» retcons a lot of things from the original trilogy — car models are from long after when the first film is supposed to take place, Max is still quite young despite spending decades in the wasteland, etc. — but according to the tie-in comics, it still treats the first three movies as canon. It’s a soft reboot that still takes into account everything Max (now played by Tom Hardy) has been through. And though «Furiosa» is a prequel to «Fury Road,» it will probably still be best enjoyed by those who already know Charlize Theron’s version of the character and have seen her story play out.

Over the course of the first two «Godfather» films, we see Michael become increasingly cold and malevolent — first when he commits murder himself in «Part I,» then when he arranges the murder of his own brother in «Part II.» For the aforementioned Reddit theorist, Michael becomes truly possessed during his godson’s baptism at the end of «Part I.»

The famous scene cuts back and forth between the Catholic rite and the murder of various Corleone family enemies, including Moe Greene (Alex Rocco), Emilio Barzini (Richard Conte), and Philip Tattaglia (Victor Rendina). At the same time, the priest asks Michael if he renounces Satan, and all his works, and all his pomps. «His transformation into the Devil is complete and so the movie closes just as it begins,» reads the original Reddit post, citing Vito Corleone’s (Marlon Brando) shady dealmaking during his daughter’s wedding reception. «With men in need making a deal with the Devil incarnate.»

The redditor concedes that in the context of their theory, the word «Devil» can be swapped with «power,» and that «The Godfather» is an examination of «how that power corrupts.» It’s less fantastical, certainly, than a grand theory of demonic possession, but Francis Ford Coppola’s use of Catholic imagery can’t be denied — nor can Michael’s hypocritical renunciation of Satan as his underlings kill half a dozen men. It’s a baptism by fire in the truest sense of the phrase. Michael may not be literally possessed by the Devil, but for Coppola, the Don’s absolute power is essentially the same thing, leading to the dissolution of his soul.

For those who have played the «Metal Gear Solid» games and seen «Escape From New York,» the connections between Snake Plissken and Solid Snake are readily apparent. From the character’s penchant for smoking cigarettes to his recurring distrust of government representatives and authority figures, there’s a lot of Snake in … erm, Snake. For instance, when Solid Snake is undercover in «Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty,» he even uses Plissken as his codename.

As if facts like these don’t make it obvious enough, Naked Snake, another series protagonist, would later become Big Boss, and the character even wears an eyepatch. Ditto for Solid Snake himself by the time «Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots» came along. Add in the signature gravelly voice and cocky attitude, and it becomes pretty clear that there are major connections between the characters.

While Hideo Kojima was never quite able to wrangle Russell to voice the character, he did eventually land Kiefer Sutherland to be the motion capture performer and voice actor for Venom Snake in «Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain» and its predecessor «Ground Zeroes.»

«Beyond the Forest» was widely panned upon its initial release, and it marked a less-than-amiable split between Bette Davis and the studio she’d worked under for nearly two decades. And yet, it was apparently memorable enough for acclaimed playwright Edward Albee to reference it in his famous 1962 play, «Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.» The 1966 film adaptation of that play starred Elizabeth Taylor as Martha, who, in Taylor’s own inimitable style, quotes Davis’ «What a dump» line. Thus, its brilliance was brought to a new generation of moviegoers.

Charting the line’s journey from Davis to Taylor — each an icon in her own era — is somewhat simpler than charting how it became so iconic in the gay community specifically. A video retrospective on Davis posted to YouTube by noted drag performer Jaymes Mansfield describes how «gays rediscovered the film,» calling it a «treasured gem of camp.» Old-school Hollywood actresses like Davis, Taylor, Mae West, and Judy Garland have long been icons in the gay community, representing a certain blend of resilience, grace, and femininity.

«Davis’s star career has become inextricably enmeshed with the history of gay male fandom,» film and literature professor David Greven writes on his blog, Jump Cut. He argues, «An important aspect of the woman’s transformation, one of the woman’s film’s defining events, is its metaphorical value as a coming out allegory. I speculate that one of the reasons why gay men have been so drawn to the genre is that the woman’s travails and specifically her transformation allegorize both closeted gay male identity and coming out.»

What’s the lowest-scored Jack Black film on Rotten Tomatoes? That dishonor falls to «Envy,» a 2004 comedy where Black portrays Nick, a schemer with a big dream. Tim (Ben Stiller) is used to his best friend’s outlandish ideas, so he doesn’t put any stock in Nick’s latest notion — a vaporizer that can eliminate any organic matter. Tim doesn’t invest, but when The Vaporizer goes on the market as a dog doo removal system, it becomes a runaway success. Tim watches in increasingly violent paroxysms of jealousy over Nick’s success, culminating in a fight that could ruin their friendship for good.

This movie hit a low point with many critics. For instance, Jo Berry of Empire Magazine castigated the film for taking the typically funny Stiller and Black and making them dull. The end result was an 8% critical approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. But unlike «The Super Mario Bros. Movie,» there is no audience groundswell to protect its reputation — it has a 27% approval score from viewers. Thankfully, at least Black’s had plenty of other films that have gotten critical and audience approval since then.
