Ryan Gravenberch has once again been singled out for criticism after Liverpool’s Premier League newbie made the ‘not appropriate’ decision to turn down a call-up from the Netherlands U21 side.
It is a debate which continues to rumble on without an end in sight. Dutch under 21 coach Michael Reiziger once again quizzed about the former Ajax and Bayern Munich ace, and making it clear that the decision Ryan Gravenberch made at the start of September has not yet been forgotten.
Gravenberch rejected a call-up for the Dutch youth side because, as the country’s FA explained, he wanted to focus on getting settled into life at Liverpool, having moved to England only four days earlier.
Understandable, maybe. Forgivable, in some circumstances.

But not according to Reiziger. Gravenberch was conspicuous by his absence – both from the U21s and from the senior Netherlands side – this month as he bids to earn his place back in the good books.
Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch out of favour for Netherlands
“Ryan has great potential, that is clear,” Reiziger tells Good Morning Eredivisie. “He cancelled (on us) and we have sent a signal that this is not appropriate. We are in discussions with him, and it will work out fine.
“(But) you also want to send a signal that it is not normal to cancel. Of course, there are reasons for this.”
Reiziger points out that Ajax starlet Devyne Rensch also pulled out of contention after his partner gave birth. But that, he argues, was a far better reason than the one Gravenberch put forward.
“In Ryan’s situation we did not think it was permissible to cancel,” adds the former Middlesbrough defender, indicating that Liverpool’s £34 million man is likely to remain absent until the spring.
Getting better and better
“We are now closer to the next period (the November break) and we now want to keep the group as it is. After that, we are in March.
“We are talking to Ryan. We also see that he is a good football player, but we already knew that.”
Gravenberch produced his best Liverpool display yet in the 5-1 Europa League hammering of Toulouse, scoring after Darwin Nunez had somehow contrived to hit the post.
