Funny Omegle memes flood Twitter as video platform shuts down for good

Omegle has been shut down for good and people are sharing funny memes online as they mourn the video chat platform. The site let you socialise face-to-face with strangers and was popular with teens.

It has closed after 14 years following attacks on the social media site. Omegle gained a negative reputation with nudity, child safety and abuse and its owner, Leif K-Brooks, said that too many people “misused” it.

Omegle shuts down after 14 years

Omegle’s founder Leif K-Brooks shared a picture of its logo on a tombstone and said in a statement: “Omegle is no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically. Frankly, I don’t want to have a heart attack in my 30s.”

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who used Omegle for positive purposes, and to everyone who contributed to the site’s success in any way. I’m so sorry I couldn’t keep fighting for you,” he added.

K-Brooks delved into the “barrage of attacks” Omegle has received “based on the behavior of a malicious subset of users.” People started “misusing” the platform and began to commit unspeakably heinous crimes.

Omegle was supposed to be a place for “meeting new people” with anonymity which made it less likely that a malicious person would track someone down after their chat ended, but was sadly used negatively.
