Live crabs break out of packets at market

In the one minute viral video, crabs are lined up in a refrigerator at a seafood market ready to be sold and eaten.

Each one is individually placed in a polystyrene dish, covered with a plastic film and completed with a label.

At first glance it looks like the shellfish are dead, but one of them quickly starts raising up out of the packaging.

It uses its pincers to break through the film, and another one a few rows along then starts doing the same thing.

The Araki Fresh Fish Store shared the clip on December 2 and wrote: “The hairy crab is alive and well today.”

‘Horrible’ video divides internet

The video has gone viral in the west and is horrifying many.

One person wrote: “That felt like a horror movie.”

“Oh hell nah,” said another.

A third person added: “Never ever.”

“This is horrible,” someone else wrote.

However, others see nothing wrong and are saying they would happily eat the “fresh” seafood.

Another said: “When people say fresh seafood thats what I expect. 10/10.”

“Absolutely. That crab’s FRESH,” someone else agreed.

It’s actually very normal

The video is off-putting for some, but it’s actually very normal. In fact, crabs must be cooked while alive or only just dead.

Live crabs are packaged and kept at a low temperature which puts them into a state of hibernation, so they don’t usually break out.

The crustacean is then bought and put straight into boiling water while alive to avoid bacteria from taking over the meat.

As soon as a crab dies, bacteria quickly multiplies which is toxic to humans and therefore makes the meat inedible.
