“So I was getting ready to do some Christmas baking and I noticed a few brown specs in the flour and when I lifted the lid, these things were crawling all over the flour,” she said.

The doctor from Ireland filmed the glass jar of flour, which has loads of tiny brown bugs crawling across the top.

“What the hell are these?” she added. “I’m never baking again after this. This is an airtight container how the hell did these things get in there?”

They’re called grain weevils

The bugs are called wheat or grain weevils and are tiny insects that feed on cereal grains and are actually really common pests.

They commonly cause significant damage to harvested grains stored by farmers and drastically decrease crop yields

Weevils are around three to five millimetres long and are a frightening thing to see in your flour, but they’re actually harmless.

In fact, food scientist Skye Blackburn told The Guardian: “It doesn’t hurt if you eat them and it’s all extra protein.”

“The average person will eat about a quarter of a kilogram of insects in their diet every year anyway!” he added.

‘I’m panicking now’

They might be safe, but the viral video is making people on TikTok scared to look in their cupboards and pantries.

One person commented: “I’ve got a massive bag of flour in my kitchen cabinet. I’m panicking now.”

“Omg I’ve got a bag of flour sitting in my cupboard. I’m binning it now,” said another.

A third person added: “When I first discovered flour weevils my soul literally left my body.”

“Happened to me once. Literally skin crawling stuff,” someone else said.
