Despite his adorable diminutive figure and squeaky voice, Madagascar’s Mort actually has an incredibly dark backstory that includes horrific details like “absorbing” his grandmother and obsessing over King Julien’s feet.
Everyone first fell in love with Mort during the 2005 animated classic Madagascar about zoo animals finding their footing on the island of the same name. The blockbuster, which turned into a franchise, starred the likes of Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Who/what is Mort from Madagascar?
Mort, voiced by Andy Richter, was introduced as a mouse lemur fan of the island’s King Julien. The comic relief character was very obsessive and he would soon become a fan favourite.
He would later appear in spin-off projects like Madagascar Escape 2 Africa, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Penguins of Madagascar and All Hail King Julien.
Mort’s dark history brought to life
The little guy’s troubling history was brought to life by TikTok user @daisyfoko, who took to the platform this month with a lengthy video and the caption, “Replying to @tiktoktactictalk this is gonna change your life.”
In the video, she explained: “Mort, who many people assume is a baby because he baby talks. It is revealed in All Hail King Julien that Mort is an immortal species, capable of sucking the life out of other immortal species. Thus giving him multiple personalities.”
Daisy continued to explain that such lores sheds light on why Mort sometimes appears as “smart Mort” and is able to do really smart things. He’s not just smart, it’s literally from someone he absorbed! If you thought it couldn’t get creepier, then you’d be wrong, because Mort also absorbed both his grandmother and grandfather.
The little creature also develops random powers like generating a “forcefield of ignorance” that protects him from all harm and super strength.
According to Daisy, it is also revealed that the reason Mort is obsessed with King Julien and is feet is because “King Julien reminds him of Stalin.” Yes, THAT Stalin.
“Also Mort carried out the assasination, in cannon, of JFK,” she added before continuing to explain that Mort goes on spy missions. But there is still more. “It’s also implied that not only is Mort an immortal who can time travel, but he is also the god of death.”
TikTok reacts to Mort from Madagascar becoming the god of death
Predictably, TikTok did not take this news well. After all, Daisy managed to wreck everyone’s childhood vision of the adorable little lemur.
Reactiing to the post, one person wrote: “i expected everything but the stalin namedrop like WHAT.”
“if it gives you guys an idea, theres a 2 part series of Video Essays called The Crimes Of Mort on youtube, and each part is TWO AND A HALF HOURS LONG,” another person wrote, to which the original creator replied, “IVE SEEN IT AND ITS AMAZING.”
Someone else added: “Is this how I get a hyper-fixation on the Madagascar series?”
