Comedian Matt Rife is generally private about his love life, but he recently opened up about the backstory behind his girlfriend.
Rife claimed he didn’t speak to his girlfriend for a year after meeting her as she told him it wasn’t “appropriate” for them to be friends, due to her having a boyfriend at the time.
The comedian has been under fire in the past week after opening his Netflix special with a joke about domestic violence.
Matt Rife’s girlfriend is a famous actress
Rife’s relationship is still in its early days but he announced it in August on Good Morning America. The comedian confirmed on the show that he was no longer single.
In October, Rife spoke to PEOPLE about his relationship with his girlfriend Jessica Lord. “It’s newer, but I mean I do prefer to keep it on the private side. Just because, I mean, people are literally insane,” he said.
Jessica Lord is an actress and dancer, best known for her starring role in the popular Hulu show Find Me In Paris. She’s also played roles in Party of Five and Ransom, alongside children’s show The Next Step.
The actress has a large following on TikTok too, with over 400,000 followers. Lord was born in England but raised for a lot of her life in Canada, accounting for her mixture of accents.
Jessica Lord refused to hang out with Rife for a year
Rife shared the backstory of his relationship on a November appearance on the podcast Podcrushed, explaining that Lord actually had a boyfriend when they met and so felt it was not “appropriate” for them to hang out.
They met in Mississippi in 2022, when tornado warnings meant Rife couldn’t fly out as planned. He said he continued to push back his flight every time though, in order to spend more time with Lord.
“I stayed an extra two days just so I could keep hanging out with her,” he said. “I was really trying, which was such a s***** thing to do, she had a boyfriend.”
The comedian said he was “obsessed” with Lord and that they had a “wonderful connection” off the bat. When both of them returned to LA, Matt Rife said he reached out to his now-girlfriend, because he knew she wished to attend a show.
“When she got back to L.A. I called her and was like ‘Hey, do you wanna come out?’ and she was like ‘You know, I have a boyfriend and I just don’t think it’s appropriate that we be friends because obviously you like me,’ ” he said.
According to the Netflix star, he didn’t talk to Lord for a year after that.
Matt Rife is facing criticism en-masse after the debut of his Netflix special called Natural Selection. The show, which premiered on November 15, was opened with a joke about domestic violence.
The joke revolved around an anecdote of Rife and a friend being served by a waitress with a black eye. When his friend pondered why she wasn’t working in the kitchen to hide her injury, he responded: “I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.”
