Supreme Court lawyer Neal Katyal was a surprising attendee at Burning Man 2023 and his pattern-shirt and propeller hat-wearing selfie has gone viral.
The Burning Man festival over the weekend left about 70,000 people stranded in the Nevada desert after unexpected heavy rains flooded the site. Attendees were told to conserve food, water, and fuel, and find shelter in the Black Rock Desert as the entrance was closed, leaving them stuck on location.
Officials revealed on Saturday that one person had died at the event; it was confirmed on Sunday that it was “unrelated to the weather”.
The stranded attendees were able to begin leaving the site on Monday after rain made conditions too wet and muddy for vehicles to exit. Some brave guests hiked through the difficult conditions, including Neal Katyal, the former acting solicitor general of the United States.

Katyal, 53, was enjoying the week-long desert campout in his eccentric pattern shirt and matching propeller hat until the weather took a turn for the worst. The Supreme Court lawyer accessorized his vibrant look with a gold chain attached to a white-colored bust of a frightening face.
Burning Man organizers told guests they could walk about five miles from the festival site to the nearest town of Gerlach, where shuttle buses would take them to Reno. They noted: “This isn’t a simple solution, but it is a possible one should you need or want to make the trek.
Katyal was one of those who endured the journey.
Described as an “incredibly harrowing six-mile journey,” Katyal advised his Twitter followers on how to best approach the trek given his first-hand experience.
The lawyer claims that the hike was “very slippery and the mud is like cement and sticks to your boots. It has quicksand properties.”
Katyal, who served as acting solicitor general during the Obama administration, warned that others stranded at the festival site should not make the journey unless they are in good shape and part of a group.
“It was quite hard, and will get harder if/when it rains more,” he warned. “Talk your friends out of the hike unless you really think they can do it safely. There are treacherous places where it is worse than walking on ice.”
Katyal also advised that those making the journey should place plastic bags on their bare feet before wearing socks and boots to avoid being soaked by high mud levels.
Twitter can’t get enough of Neal Katyal’s standout fashion
While his appearance at Burning Man was unexpected, we’re more focused on his outfit choice – as are many on Twitter.
“If Neal Katyal hiking six miles across a muddy lake in a propeller hat isn’t an inspiration for a future Christopher Nolan movie, I don’t know what is,” one fan joked.
