As per reports, the incident occurred Monday morning near the Howard Plaza Towers. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) noted that four students were injured due to the fight that broke.

The news about the brawl comes days after the MPD reported that a ‘Howard University-affiliated’ person was a victim of stabbing and robbery hours after the move-in weekend for freshman dormitories came to an end.

Given that a number of incidents have taken place in a short period of time, Howard announced that they had increased their security to ensure the safety of the students.

Security officer failed to stop the fight

A Howard University-appointed security guard was present at the scene, but failed to respond as per ‘university standards.’

The officials confirmed that the security is no longer affiliated with the University. At the same time, a University officer has also been suspended after it was noted that he too failed to follow the procedures properly.

Following the incident, the University conducted a virtual town hall for students and their parents and assured everyone that safety is the top priority.

What are some of the measures being taken?

In an official statement that was resulted to the students, Howard University noted that they would be adding 1000 security cameras in and around the campus to ensure full security. This is in addition to the 1000 that are already installed.

At the same time, there will be increased staff and security around the campus at all times. Apart from this, students will be required to show their IDs to enter residence halls and other buildings open only to students, faculty, and staff.

Furthermore, students are advised to get a POM – Peace of Mind – device and use it in situations that they find unsafe.
