Even though we won’t be seeing Jessica Alba suiting up as Sue Storm again, «Deadpool 3» still looks like it will be jam-packed with cameos. The return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine alone — far more than a cameo — was a huge shock to many, as 2017’s «Logan» was supposed to be his final outing as the character. Other «X-Men» characters like Aaron Stanford’s Pyro have already been confirmed, but there are surely more waiting in the wings.

Because «Deadpool 3» deals with the Time Variance Authority, or TVA, and because it’s blending two different Cinematic universes, there are tons of opportunities for multiverse shenanigans. The best point of reference is probably «Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,» which featured such surprises as John Krasinski’s Reed Richards and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier. It’s more than likely that «Deadpool 3» will take us down a similar path, especially with the eponymous antihero’s fourth-wall-breaking comedy.

With Marvel Studio looking to properly introduce both the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in the near future, «Deadpool & Wolverine» could do a lot of table-setting. However, the film’s R rating means that a huge contingent of young Marvel fans won’t be able to see it in theaters. It remains to be seen how much essential storytelling the movie will include as a result. «Deadpool & Wolverine» releases in theaters on July 26, 2024.

Joe Flaherty’s oeuvre boasts diverse credits, but he particularly shined in comedic roles. His performance as the old-fashioned father of Lindsay (Linda Cardellini) and Sam (John Francis Daley) on «Freaks and Geeks» ensured that there were always laughs to complement the show’s more dramatic moments. However, some of his most acclaimed work as a performer and writer happened in the 1970s and ’80s courtesy of «SCTV.»

The comedy series saw Flaherty play multiple characters, including Hollywood icon Charlton Heston, across 76 episodes. He also served as a head writer, and his celebrated tenure earned the show two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program. «SCTV» also saw Flaherty work with some bona fide comedy legends, including John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, and Andrea Martin.

While he didn’t always play the leading man, Flaherty is associated with some of the best comedies of all time. His legacy is synonymous with creating laughter, and his filmography is full of projects waiting to be rediscovered.

Other headliners in the Wes Anderson-directed Star Wars flick include Scarlett Johansson as Leia. She’s worked with the director on «Isle of Dogs» and «Asteroid City.»  Johansson’s «Asteroid City» character was inspired by an old Hollywood starlet, which makes sense considering Anderson’s aesthetic has always been rooted in the past. That’s immediately apparent from the AI Star Wars trailer, as the visuals follow that approach. There’s a simplistic, relaxed aura to the video, proving that Star Wars doesn’t need hi-fi special effects and spectacle to tell a story in a galaxy far, far away. 

A minimalistic, auteur-focused spin on Star Wars would be a breath of fresh air. And if actors like Timotheé Chalamet, Edward Norton, and Willem Dafoe (who are all in the trailer) were to join the franchise, it would be an exciting day for fans. Unfortunately, it seems highly unlikely that Disney would greenlight such a bold take. Beyond that, Anderson has never expressed interest in joining franchise fare, as signaled by his various indie pictures throughout the years. His tenacity to stick to his guns is why he’s probably able to assemble star-studded, A-list heavy ensembles consistently, despite his films not making out-of-this-world money. 

For what it’s worth, Johnasson and Jason Schwartzman enjoy the small things about working with Anderson, including his uncompromising creative vision and the joy he exudes on set. 

Micheal Keaton’s scenes only took two weeks to film, an extraordinary feat considering the role required considerable makeup and at least some wire work. In all likelihood, the process was sped along by his sheer talent. «He’s a master improviser,» Tim Burton told Esquire in 2014. «That time with Michael … was the most profoundly creative time in my career, every day was exciting. I miss it.»

Fortunately for Burton, the two are working together again on the long-gestating «Beetlejuice 2,» the trailer for which sets the ‘Juice loose. Although Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis won’t be in «Beetlejuice 2,» the sequel will also see the return of Catherine O’Hara as Delia and Winona Ryder as a now grown-up Lydia, as well as the addition of Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid.

«Beetlejuice Beetlejuice» hits theaters on September 6.

While some are singing the fake trailer’s praises, others think that Keanu Reeves isn’t the right fit for Ghost Rider. «No one can replace Nick cage as Ghost rider for me,» shared @Silly_Illidan. This sentiment was surprisingly consistent in the comments section, with @franklindalmacio383 writing, «Keanu has his own character. but ghost rider will always be cage.» While many grew up on Nicolas Cage’s «Ghost Rider» flicks, those projects were largely maligned by critics. The first film has a low 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It seems like nostalgia still persists amongst some fans, who think the actor did a solid job. 

Will Cage’s «Ghost Rider 3» happen? Probably not, as Marvel would likely want to recast the role whenever they decide to reboot the franchise. In a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), Cage said he would at least hear the studio out if Marvel asked him to return as the daredevil. Still, Reeves would make a solid Ghost Rider, as he’s been a popular fan cast for years. And for what it’s worth, Ghost Rider would be the Marvel character that Reeves’ younger self would want to play. If Marvel Studios ever decides to bring back Ghost Rider to the big screen, Reeves would probably be game for it. Then again, the actor is in his late 50s, and Marvel would probably want to secure a younger actor to play the hero for several sequels. 

So who did Peter Mullan play in «Harry Potter,» exactly? He played Corban Yaxley, a member of the Dark Lord Voldemort’s army of Death Eaters (Voldemort was played by several actors throughout the series, with Ralph Fiennes opposite Mullan as the villain). Luckily for Mullan, considering that he clearly didn’t enjoy his time in the «Potter» films, he only appeared in the first half of the final installment, «Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1.» (Yaxley’s character does appear more in the books, but it makes sense that many of his other appearances were cut from the films for brevity). 

Yaxley is sort of a run-of-the-mill Death Eater where the group is concerned; he, like many other Death Eaters, disavows Voldemort when the Dark Lord disappears, only to beg for forgiveness from his master upon his return. He most prominently appears in «Deathly Hallows — Part 1» during the sequence where Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) consume Polyjuice Potion and infiltrate the Ministry of Magic to track down one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. It’s too bad he apparently didn’t enjoy the experience.

In 2002, Jeffrey Jones was arrested and accused of violating Los Angeles Penal Code Section 311.4(c), Use of a Minor to Perform Prohibited Acts. He was released on a $20,000 bond and, in July 2003, pleaded no contest to allegations that he asked a 14-year-old boy to pose for sexually explicit photographs. He was subsequently sentenced to five years of probation and is required to register as a sex offender on an annual basis.

Jones again fell foul of the law when he failed to update his registration in 2009. He pleaded guilty to those charges in 2010 and was sentenced to 250 hours of community service and three more years of probation. 

Despite his history, Jones has maintained a surprisingly high profile as an actor since the accusation surfaced in 2002. He appeared regularly on «Deadwood» as journalist A.W. Merrick, as Richard Cummings in the film «Who’s Your Caddy?,» and in the SyFy original movie «10.0.» His most recent role was in 2019’s «Deadwood: The Movie.»

From the age of six, Jonathan Brandis was one of the busiest young actors in Hollywood, with the Connecticut-born performer consistently finding work in high-profile projects such as «It,» «Blossom,» «L.A. Law,» «The Flash,» and «The Wonder Years.» When he was cast as a series lead on «SeaQuest DSV» in 1994, he became so popular with young audiences that he received as many as 4,000 pieces of fan mail per week and eventually won a Young Artist Award. But on November 12, 2003, he died by suicide in his Los Angeles apartment, becoming one of many actors who sadly died soon after they got famous.

At the time of his passing, friends of Brandis began to speculate that the actor may have been suffering from depression due to his struggling career. Following a supporting role in an early Ang Lee film called «Ride with the Devil,» he had to wait almost three years for another acting job to come through, in the 2002 World War II drama «Hart’s War.» According to these friends, Brandis was distraught when he learned his role had largely been cut from the film in post-production.

More recently, however, Brandis’ father Gregory has firmly disputed this narrative. He told People in 2021 that his son’s death «wasn’t due to the entertainment industry,» instead sharing that, in hindsight, he believes his son exhibited symptoms of bipolar disorder. «I look back now, and in his 20s, he showed signs of manic depression,» Gregory said. «I hope that anyone suffering can go get help.»

Captain Carter briefly made a live-action appearance in «Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,» where the character dies at the hands of Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen). Hayley Atwell felt her «Multiverse of Madness» cameo didn’t serve Captain Carter well, but it set the precedent for future live-action appearances. Based on Alex Perez’s report, it’s unclear just how large of a role Atwell’s hero will have in «Avengers: Secret Wars,» though one can imagine it will be minimal. «Secret Wars» is set to be the direct sequel to the untitled «Avengers 5,» which Perez didn’t mention in his rumor. Based on that, it’s fair to assume that Captain Carter will likely only receive a cameo in that film.

Rumors have suggested that the upcoming «Avengers» flick will have a plethora of cameos, with «Secret Wars» set to feature an emotional Marvel reunion that will please fans. As a concept, «Secret Wars» relies heavily on guest appearances, so it makes sense that Atwell would be brought back as her fan-favorite character. She is one of the strongest in Marvel’s alternate universe — Captain Carter notably wasn’t killed by the Infinity Stones in «What If…?» Season 2, making her a worthy player for «Secret Wars.» 

Atwell hasn’t exactly confirmed or suggested that Captain Carter is on track for future live-action MCU appearances. So while it may seem exciting that the character is set to return to the big screen, fans should remember it’s still a rumor. 

A battle with the rating board is mild compared to the bizarre things that happened on the set of «The Omen,» but it was still a challenge, albeit one that led to an acclaimed prequel movie. Film critic Eric Goldman wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that «The First Omen» is a scary horror flick with some wild scenes, including one that led to the audience applauding. Could this scene be the sequence that appalled the censors?

While the vagina scene is particularly noteworthy due to this being a mainstream release, some viewers have noted that the movie is full of surprising moments, not to mention some nice nods to classic horror flicks. «Holy Hell. I’d expect a horror this unrepentantly ghoulish from a small studio, not 20th Century. Graphic, grisly, and with a protracted homage to Possession,» @YorkshireTX wrote. Meanwhile, Dread Central critic Mary Beth McAndrews praised «The First Omen» for being as thoughtful as it is repulsive, especially for how it explores disturbing subject matter with real-world connotations. 

«The First Omen» might be one horror movie that some viewers find too disturbing to finish. Still, regardless of how it fares in the long run, it will go down in history as a Disney flick that almost got an NC-17 rating. For a horror movie, that’s a badge of honor.

«The Accountant» follows Christian Wolff, an accountant with autism who helps criminals launder money. The film dives deep into Wolff’s psyche, showing how his work causes complications in the present day. The picture also highlights the character’s complicated upbringing. What’s most interesting thing about the release is the chaotic and furious action sequences. Action junkies should watch «The Accountant» based purely on the unique martial arts style shown in the film. 

Beyond exciting set pieces, it boasts an all-star cast filled with heavy hitters. In addition to Affleck, the film features Anna Kendrick as a woman who crosses paths with Wolff and J.K. Simmons as a government executive. «The Punisher» actor Jon Bernthal stars as Wolff’s brother, while Jeffrey Tambor has a memorable appearance as a man from Wolff’s troubling past. 

Thanks to fan reception and strong box office receipts, a sequel was announced in 2017. In 2020, Affleck suggested to Collider that «The Account» could possibly continue as a television series, and the project remained in limbo until March of this year, when it was announced that Amazon MGM Studios would produce the sequel, nabbing the rights from Warner Bros. Pictures. The long-awaited «Accountant» sequel will bring back Affleck, Simmons, Jon Bernthal, and director Gavin O’Connor for a new adventure.

What makes «Arrival» — which, like the «Dune» films, is an adaptation and is based on a short story by Ted Chiang titled «Story Of Your Life» — so special that it ousted «Dune: Part Two» for the top Rotten Tomatoes spot? «Arrival» might be a massive Best Picture nominee and a science-fiction movie about aliens communicating with planet Earth, but it’s also a deeply felt, moving story about a mother grieving the loss of her daughter.

After linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams, who was, astonishly, not nominated for Best Actress that year) loses her daughter Hannah to a terminal illness, she’s asked for her help by the US Army after alien airships start trying to communicate with humans. Alongside a physicist named Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), Louise is able to decipher the alien language, using whiteboards to communicate with them, but she starts having intense, overwhelming visions of Hannah any time she speaks with the aliens. Meanwhile, the Army grows suspicious of the aliens when Louise reports that they used a word that could mean «weapon,» though Louise insists that the aliens don’t mean harm.

The way that VDenis illeneuve intertwines Louise’s larger mission and her grief for her child is brilliant, and if you haven’t seen «Arrival,» we wouldn’t dare to spoil it here. Still, it’s not a huge surprise that it’s Villeneuve’s biggest sci-fi critical darling to date.

«The Wages of Fear» 2024 follows a group who have to transport trucks filled with nitroglycerine to put out a deadly fire that’s at risk of causing a major explosion. It’s basically the same plot as the 1953 movie, though the modern version ramps up the action compared to the original. Henri-Georges Clouzot’s movie is less action-packed and economical with its storytelling, standing out at the time because of its grit and realism, while the 2024 remake is much more in line with contemporary action fare. The newer version is also leaner and meaner, coming in at 104 minutes, while the OG, which is currently available to stream on Max and The Criterion Channel, is over two hours long.

It’s interesting to note that this isn’t the first remake of the 1953 French film. Howard W. Koch loosely adapted the original with his 1958 picture «Violent Road,» which has a 6/10 score on IMDb. The most prominent English-language remake of «Wages of Fear» didn’t come out for another two decades, however. In 1977, «The Exorcist’s» late director, William Friedkin, helmed an American version of the film titled «Sorcerer.» Arguably one of the most tense films from that decade and widely underrated, Friendkin’s version was a box office bomb. But despite its financial failure, «Sorcerer» is considered by cinephiles to be the best remake of «Wages of Fear,» which is exemplified by its 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s not surprising to hear that Anthony Mackie feels this way about his Marvel role. When Sam Wilson is introduced in «Captain America: The Winter Soldier,» the character is already strategically in line to take on the title held by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), something that would manifest years later at the end of «The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.» Mackie discussed this specifically, explaining that his character’s trajectory was predetermined. «You know, when we introduced the Falcon, and the growth of the Falcon to Captain America, all of that had to coincide with what Stan had already [given] us.»

In comparison, «Twisted Metal» felt more free-wheeling and creatively liberating for the A-lister. The actor has nothing but positive things to say about his Peacock show — Mackie previously said that the timing of «Twisted Metal» was just right. The series proved to be a success and has already been greenlit for a sophomore outing. While he’ll continue to create havoc on that show, Mackie also has more Marvel appointments to fulfill. 

The actor is set to headline «Captain America: Brave New World,» his cinematic debut as the iconic Marvel character. Plot details on the sequel are slim, though merch confirms that Mackie’s Captain America will get a new suit. With Mackie now in the hot seat as the new Captain America, it will be interesting to see if future franchise installments afford him more creative control.
