TikTok’s ‘rice hack’ for weight loss debunked as fake Jennifer Lopez clip goes viral

A viral ‘rice hack’ to help with weight loss is circling TikTok this month – but the whole thing is fake news.

Videos are claiming that Jennifer Lopez used the diet to slim down, but the singer has never endorsed any such fad.

TikTok’s ‘rice hack’ for weight loss debunked

The fake weight loss hack swirling on TikTok tells people to soak rice in water and drink the concoction every morning.

A viral video claims the method was discovered in February 2023 and also recommends adding an unnamed “special ingredient”.

“Drinking warm water with rice in the morning has been found to help with weight loss,” it says. “People are losing approximately 2.2 pounds of fat daily by using this rice-based method.”

It goes on to claim that drinking this “increases fat shrinking cells by 700%” and enables the body to “dissolve stubborn fat stores”.

“These fat-shrinking cells are responsible for burning accumulated fat around the waist and thighs,” it continues – but this isn’t true.

The entire video contains fake information about weight loss and metabolism that should not be followed or believed.

Fake Jennifer Lopez clip goes viral

The phoney rice diet is being shared alongside a fake clip of Jennifer Lopez saying that she uses the weight loss method.

“A lot of people are trying to lose weight and are wondering how am I staying in shape. Forget about all the diets and training, I am using a special rice method that is helping me stay fit and healthy,” the singer appears to say.

However, the star never said that she drinks rice water. The clip uses footage from an interview with Dr Oz in which she spoke about the importance of drinking water to stay in shape and has fake audio added.

“Water. Lots of water. Believe it or not, it does help keep your weight down. It obviously keeps you hydrated… for me, it just feels good,” she said in 2015. “It’s mostly what I drink all the time… I just drink it all day, it’s the thing I drink.”

Drinking water does aid weight loss

There is no link between rice water and weight loss, but drinking more water is scientifically proven to help shed those pounds.

As explained by Healthline, drinking 0.5 litres of water may increase the calories you burn by a staggering 24 to 30% for an hour afterward.

Drinking water before meals can also lead to reduced calorie intake as you feel more full, and it aids weight loss by replacing other drinks that are high in calories and sugar.

The only way to lose weight is by burning more calories than you consume from food. This is called being in a calorie deficit.
