Venmo users question Starbucks gift card notification amid ongoing lawsuit

Starbucks has its plate full with a legal battle against their baristas’ labor union (Workers United), boycott calls on social media, and criticism from political leaders. Amid all the issues, Venmo users got a notification urging them to send a Starbucks Gift Card worth $15 to someone they know to earn a reward. The timing of this has got a lot of users of the mobile payment service app talking.

Venmo users get a notification urging them to send a Starbucks gift card

Many Venmo users took to Twitter to share a recent notification they received from the app. “Send a Starbucks Gift Card, earn $5 on Venmo” the headline says.

The new Starbucks offer on Venmo urges you to send a gift card worth $15 via the mobile payment app. In return you will get $5 as your Venmo balance. “Max 50K rewards available. Terms apply” it says at the end.

The promotion left many users questioning the timing of it. The coffee chain is facing massive boycott calls online over its workers union’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Some thought that the company was pushing the gift cards through Venmo to recover from the “boycott” calls. Others thought it could just be a “coincidentally timed” promotion. Some called it a “slick” move.

Starbucks is embroiled in a lawsuit against its workers union

Both Starbucks and a union representing its workers have filed lawsuits over the latter’s now-deleted social media post about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The said post allegedly had an image of a Gaza resistance bulldozer breaking the fence on the Israel-Gaza border. The caption read, “Solidarity with Palestine!” as per a screenshot in the New York Post.

Following the post Starbucks lodged a lawsuit against Starbucks Workers United in Iowa. The coffee chain says the post damaged their reputation. They also say that Starbucks workers across the country have since faced threatening phone calls and vandalism. The company is also facing boycott calls online.

However, the workers union said in its own lawsuit that Starbucks is weaponizing the incident to perpetuate an “illegal anti-union campaign by falsely attacking the union’s reputation with workers and the public.”

Starbucks’ statement on Workers United’s Israel-Hamas post

In their public statement about Workers United’s viral post, Starbucks said they have sympathy for those who have lost their lives, been displaced or impacted by the attack.

They further clarified “We unequivocally condemn acts of terrorism, hate and violence, and disagree with the statements and views expressed by Workers United and its members. Workers United’s words and actions belong to them, and them alone.”
