A meme is circling the internet claiming that fake eyelashes originally used to be called something much raunchier, but is it true? Read on to find out.
The beauty item, which is added to a woman’s eyelashes to make them appear longer and fuller, is the talk of social media for all the wrong reasons.
What were fake eyelashes called?
Fake eyelashes were never called anything else. They have always been known as fake eyelashes, false eyelashes or the shortened term lashes.
A meme is circling Twitter and TikTok that they used to be called ‘cumbrellas’ thanks to a rumor that a prostitute called Gerda Puridle invented them to protect her eyes from ejaculation.
However, that’s not actually true at all. The hoax began more than two years ago and has been circling the internet ever since.
They’re not called ‘cumbrellas’
It all started in 2021 when a post appeared online that said:
“Did you know… that in 1882 London prostitute Gerda Puridle invented elongated eyelashes or ‘cumbrellas’ to block semen from getting in working girls’ eyes that are worn today as common fashion?”
It instantly went viral, but the whole thing is completely made up. Gerda Puridle isn’t even a real person and the racy story about how eyelashes were invented is fake.
The meme also includes a black-and-white photo, but it’s of a French actress and novelist called Alice Regnault who wasn’t a prostitute.
The fake rumor is still fooling people on social media in 2023, with one person writing: “If you don’t know why fake eyelashes were invented Google it.”
“If you knew the reason behind their invention, you might reconsider wearing them. And indeed, you definitely should,” said another.
So why were eyelashes invented?
The real reason why eyelashes were invented is exactly as you’d expect – for women to enhance their appearance.
People have been darkening their eyelashes for millennia, including both ancient Egyptians and people in ancient Rome.
The first cosmetic mascara was invented many centuries later by Eugene Rimmel, Queen Victoria’s perfumer.
It was Canadian inventor Anna Taylor who then secured a US patent for artificial eyelashes on June 6, 1911.
The product was a strip of fabric implanted with small hairs, very similar to the fake eyelashes we see today.
