PewDiePie just introduced his newborn son on YouTube and many are wondering – Why did the YouTuber move to Japan? And does he speak Japanese?

The video documents his wife Marzia’s labour in a Tokyo hospital and lots of fans didn’t realise he had moved away from the UK full time.

Why did PewDiePie move to Japan?

PewDiePie and Marzia moved to Tokyo, Japan because they visited as tourists many times over the years and fell in love with the country.

“We’re here mainly because we really enjoy it here,” he said in a YouTube video. “We really like it here, we feel really comfortable here.”

“We just felt like, we really want to take on this adventure while we’re still young,” he explained. “We want to have different experiences.”

“You live once, and this is something that we wanted to do and that we knew we were able to do. And yes, it’s scary and kind of crazy but I don’t think that should stop you.”

When did he move to Tokyo?

The pair moved in May 2022, two years after announcing they were relocating to Asia. Their move was delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic.

PewDiePie was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, while Marzia is from Arzignano, Italy. However, after getting together in 2012, they both settled in Brighton, UK, for many years.

They announced their intentions to move to Japan in 2019, bought a house and began moving their belongings over there ready for the big move.

However, the home was robbed and loads of their stuff was taken, including jewellery and personal items. Then, the pandemic hit and their move was delayed further.

Finally, after securing visas and booking a private jet because their pug Edgar was too heavy to fly commercially – they made it there in 2022.

“Obviously, it’s been a really long journey, but I really, really appreciate everyone who was supportive of us going,” he said in a video. “It just meant a lot that people were cheering for us, you know?”

“It feels amazing to be here, finally… I can’t wait for the next chapter of our lives.”

Does the YouTuber speak Japanese?

No, PewDiePie doesn’t speak Japanese, which was daunting when they first moved. However, they’re learning it while living there.

“First it was like ‘We made it to Japan!’ ‘Oh, we’re in Japan?’” he gushed after announcing they had finally made the move.

Then, the reality kicked in: “We don’t speak the language. Did we just move to another country where we don’t speak the language, half across the globe, in our 30s, with no real goal or reason?”

“Yeah, I guess we did,” he added – and they’re loving their new life in Tokyo with baby Björn who was born on July 11 2023.
