Why is ‘delivered’ flashing on Snapchat?
The word ‘delivered’ flashes after you send a message to let you know that it has delivered to the friend successfully.
“When the word ‘delivered’ is flashing on Snapchat, it means that the Snap you sent has been successfully delivered to the recipient,” Snapchat’s chatbot My AI confirmed.
“It’s just a way of letting you know that your Snap has reached its destination.”
Other words also flash including ‘recieved’, ‘opened’ and ‘new Snap’ to show that the action has been completed.
It doesn’t mean the person is active
A rumor is spreading online that the flashing means the person is currently active on the app and not opening your message.
However, that isn’t true. The pulsating feature doesn’t mean the recipient is half-swiping the message either.
This misinformation went viral in October after a TikTok user said: “Snapchat has just brought out the most intersting little thing.”
“If you sent someone a Snapchat message and it’s flashing when it says ‘delivered’, it means that they’re actively on the app using it,” she continued.
The video got more than 2.4 million views and riled everyone up in the comments as people thought it was true.

- Red solid square: Your friend sent you a Snap without audio and you haven’t opened it
- Red unfilled square: Snap you sent without audio has been viewed by the friend
- Red double unfilled arrows: Friend took a screenshot of a Snap without audio
- Red circle with arrowhead: Friend replayed a Snap without audio
- Purple solid arrow: You sent a Snap with audio and it hasn’t been opened
- Purple unfilled arrow: Friend opened your Snap with audio
- Purple solid square: Friend sent you a Snap with audio and you haven’t opened it
- Purple unfilled square: You viewed a Snap with audio from the friend
- Purple double unfilled arrows: Friend took a screenshot of a Snap with audio
- Purple circle with arrowhead: Friend replayed a Snap with audio
- Blue solid arrow: You sent a Chat message and it hasn’t been read
- Blue unfilled arrow: Friend opened your Chat message
- Blue solid square: Friend sent you a Chat message and you haven’t read it
- Blue unfilled square: You viewed a Chat message from this friend
- Blue double unfilled arrows: Friend took a screenshot of a Chat message
- Gray solid arrow: You sent a Snap that is pending
- Gray unfilled square: A Snap or Chat message is pending and may have expired
