If you’re a fan of Frank Herbert’s «Dune,» then you probably had one big question about «Dune: Part Two»: How would the movie handle Paul’s younger sister, Alia? In the book, about five years pass between the death of Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) and Paul’s victory over the Harkonnens and Emperor Shaddam IV. Alia is four years old in the climactic battle of the first novel, and as a fully conscious mind with centuries of knowledge — thanks to being exposed to the Water of Life in utero — she’s already a competent leader, referred to for her viciousness as «Alia of the Knife.»

Creating a convincing four-year-old murder princess with deep cosmic knowledge is no easy feat for a live-action movie. To avoid this dilemma, «Dune: Part Two» truncates Paul’s desert chapter to less than nine months, allowing Jessica to stay pregnant for the whole movie. Alia persists as a vocal agent in the plot, but she does so from within her mother’s womb. In one scene, though, we do see her appear to Paul as an adult woman, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

If you haven’t read the books, this all may be a bit confusing. Alia is incredibly important in «Dune Messiah» and «Children of Dune,» and because she possesses powers of prescience similar to Paul’s, she’s able to commune with him both cognitively and out of time. Both siblings exist on a shared frequency of future-sight, and Alia’s brief onscreen cameo foreshadows a much larger role in the potential sequel.

Keen-eyed viewers may well have noticed during «Dune: Part One» that Jason Momoa’s character, Duncan Idaho, has a particular continuity problem. Throughout the film, his beard seems to become shorter and shorter until it gets to a point where he is almost clean-shaven. It’s something that’s easy to miss the first time you watch the film, but becomes very obvious when you know about it. Director Denis Villeneuve wanted the character to have very little facial hair, although asking Momoa to shave off his beard was seemingly a nerve-racking experience.

Speaking on the Directors UK podcast, Villeneuve explained that the way the movie was filmed meant the actor appeared with different lengths of facial hair. He and the writers attempted to explain this in the film with a scene that mentioned the character shaving. Yet, it was ultimately removed as the humor and tone was out of sync with the rest of the movie. «We wrote the scene, to make jokes about the fact, and it felt so bad, so cheesy, that I decided to remove it,» the director said. «I said, ‘F*** it, we’ll embrace the fact that this character has a beard at the beginning and the end. Then he shaves when he goes in the mission, in the desert,’ and nobody noticed.»

In Frank Herbert’s «Dune,» Baron Harkonnen is portrayed as a sexual deviant in no uncertain terms. It’s one part of the novel that fails to hold up under modern-day scrutiny. The baron is the only character heavily implied to be gay, and his sexuality is blended with incestuous and pedophilic desires, gluttony, and violence. The confluence of homosexuality with perversion and evil is obviously deeply problematic, and it makes sense that Denis Villeneuve and his team would want to steer clear of this particular aspect of the Harkonnens.

There are some things that «Dune: Part Two» just gets wrong from the book, but for the most part, the film’s changes are understandable and fitting. If you’ve read the novel, the kiss between Feyd-Rautha and the baron may evoke these more complicated portrayals of the Harkonnens, but the scene has a totally different intonation in the movie. It’s not a sexualized moment but an exchange of power. The baron knows that Feyd will likely take his place in the near future, but he maintains the public air of being the one really in charge of the family. By taking control of that public moment with a second kiss, Feyd asserts before the whole crowd that he’s really the one running the show now.

«The Dark Knight,» written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, remains one of the most quotable movies ever. Notable examples include Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine) telling Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), «Some men just want to watch the world burn,» Joker’s sinister moments where he asks, «You wanna know how I got these scars?» and the Clown Prince of Crime’s «Why so serious?» So, while Christopher isn’t responsible for the iconic Harvey Dent line, he’s contributed dialogue that will stand the test of time.

For a while, Jonathan Nolan was mainly known for collaborating with his brother, co-writing «Memento,» «The Prestige,» «The Dark Knight,» «The Dark Knight Rises,» and «Interstellar.» However, he has emerged as a significant talent without the help of his maestro sibling. Jonathan is the creator, writer, director, and executive producer of the now-concluded science fiction dramas «Person of Interest» and «Westworld.» He’s also producing and directing multiple episodes of Amazon’s adaptation of the post-apocalyptic video game «Fallout,» a series he developed with his wife Lisa Joy. Looking further ahead, Jonathan, Joy, and Leonore Zion will be showrunners for the adaptation of the Norwegian crime novel «The Son.»

Jonathan remains booked and busy, establishing his own path apart from his brother. Still, he has bragging rights regarding the most iconic line in «The Dark Knight,» even if Christopher gets most of the credit for creating the beloved film.

Josh Nizzi’s design never made it into «Spider-Man: No Way Home,» as Michael Keaton’s Vulture didn’t appear in the film. Instead, a roster of villains, including Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), and Electro (Jamie Foxx), played key roles in the multiversal story. However, despite Keaton’s Vulture not showing up as originally intended, it didn’t spell the end for the character.

In the live-action film «Morbius,» starring Jared Leto, there is a post-credit scene featuring Adrian Toomes and the titular character. In the encounter, it’s revealed that Toomes has somehow been transported to Morbius’ universe. In his full-on, weaponized ensemble, Toomes meets with Leto’s vampiric character and tells him he’s been reading about him. Vulture reveals he isn’t sure how he got to the alternate universe, but he theorizes that his arrival has to do with Spider-Man before suggesting the pair start a team. Morbius responds by admitting that he’s intrigued by a potential partnership, with the scene hinting at the early beginnings of a new Sinister Six.

Given the commercial and critical failure of «Morbius» and Sony’s unsuccessful attempts at building a franchise around Spider-Man villains without the web-slinger (see «Madame Web»), it seems unlikely the conversation will lead to anything meaningful. However, considering Keaton’s popularity, it might be a mistake to completely abandon the Vulture as a character, as there’s still plenty of bandwidth to include him as a foe in future movies — and even use Nizzi’s updated costume concept art at some point.

From «Harry Potter» to «The Hunger Games,» the conclusion of any fantasy film series isn’t complete without an epic final battle. Just like its competitors, 2012’s «The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2» doesn’t disappoint. The Volturi are not pleased about a vampire and human producing offspring, and set out to kill Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), and all who stand in their way during a bloody fight on snowy grounds.

While their on-screen characters are mostly concerned with staying alive, the «Twilight» actors had a different hurdle to overcome while shooting this scene: keeping their eyesight intact. Everyone portraying a vampire had to wear colored contact lenses, which were far from comfortable. Elizabeth Reaser, who plays Esme Cullen, told Vanity Fair, «Oh, my God, they were beyond annoying. They are excruciating.»

For Reaser, the artificial snow used in the battle scene didn’t help her already-irritated eyes. Peter Facinelli, who portrayed Carlisle Cullen, revealed to Vanity Fair that sometimes the paper snow would make its way underneath the painful contacts: «I remember Elizabeth woke up one day and her eyes were swollen shut,» he said. «I was like, ‘I play a doctor, but I can’t help you, Elizabeth.’»

Unlike Norman Reedus, a handful of notable names have officially been confirmed for the «Venom 3» cast. First and foremost is Tom Hardy, who has played both Eddie Brock and Venom since the franchise’s first film, as well as in the MCU-changing «Spider-Man: No Way Home» post-credits scene. The actor has hinted that the end of the «Venom» trilogy will also wrap up his run with the character, referring to «Venom 3» as «the last dance» in an Instagram post. With that in mind, it’ll be interesting to see what the upcoming feature has in store for Eddie and Venom.

Aside from Hardy, a few «Venom» franchise newcomers have reportedly signed on the dotted line to appear. First and foremost is Juno Temple of «Ted Lasso» and «Fargo» fame, who has been cast in a currently undisclosed lead role. Alongside her is seasoned Marvel star Chiwetel Ejiofor, known to comic book movie fans as Baron Karl Mordo from the «Doctor Strange» franchise. «Letterkenny» and «Designated Survivor» star Clark Backo is also slated to appear. So far, Ejiofor and Backo’s roles in the film have yet to be revealed.

We’ll have to see what these actors will be up to — and if Norman Reedus will somehow appear in any capacity — as «Venom 3» inches closer to its November 8, 2024, release date.

The report regarding Hugh Jackman’s future in the MCU comes following another scoop from @MyTimeToShineH, who previously hinted that one dead Avenger could return sooner than expected, suggesting Iron Man will reappear before the universe potentially reboots itself by the end of «Avengers: Secret Wars.»

While Iron Man returning in «Avengers: Secret Wars» might be a smart way to bring Robert Downey Jr. back into the fold as one of the MCU’s leading heroes, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously thrown cold water on the rumor. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Feige said he doesn’t plan on resurrecting Iron Man. «We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,» he explained. «We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.» It’s possible Feige may be trying to misdirect audiences from Iron Man’s potential return. The character’s last appearance in «Avengers: Endgame» was a perfect end to his story, so undoing that would be a tough decision.

As for Tobey Maguire, there were rumors the actor may be teaming up with Sam Raimi for a fourth entry in the original «Spider-Man» film series. However, there hasn’t been any concrete report confirming he will return to the role in the future. That said, there still seems to be some storytelling potential with an older version of Spider-Man in the MCU in «Avengers: Secret Wars.»

Tim Blake Nelson definitely isn’t bitter about Denis Villeneuve’s choice to remove his character from «Dune: Part Two.» «I was in a scene and the scene’s no longer in the movie,» he told Anthem. «I had a really cool cameo. It was a fun little part. But as it happens, movies are too long and they have to remove some stuff. I was unfortunately on the short end of that.[..] I don’t think I’m at liberty to say what the scene was. I’d leave that to Denis [Villeneuve] if he wants to talk about it. I had a great time over there shooting it. And then he had to cut it because he thought the movie was too long. And I am heartbroken over that, but there’s no hard feelings. I loved it, and I can’t wait to do something else with him and we certainly plan to do that.»

While it’s possible that Nelson will never again surface within the world of «Dune,» there’s also some hope there’s a larger role ahead for him and for Count Fenring. After all, his wife, Bene Gesserit agent Lady Margot Fenring (Léa Seydoux), appears in the film. Count Fenring is a more prominent part of the latter part of the book series as he’s a sidekick and close ally to Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken). Eventually, he goes into battle at the ruler’s side. 

Since Nelson appears willing and able to act in another of Villeneuve’s films, it truly seems like it’s all water under the bridge — and it’s quite possible that the character can enter the picture, either way. But there may be another actor whose work was excised from «Dune: Part Two.»

In the original comics, the Skull Cowboy is arguably more of an aesthetic addition than a narrative one. His nature and backstory are kept secret, and he appears to Eric in strange moments, usually bringing bizarre portents or cryptic commentary. As someone forever locked between the realms of the living and the dead, he offers guidance of a sort to those trapped in Limbo. The Skull Cowboy also appears in the 1998 TV adaptation «The Crow: Stairway to Heaven,» played by Kadeem Hardison. In this incarnation, he’s also portrayed as a kind of guide for wayward souls like Eric.

The cut scenes from the 1994 film feature the Skull Cowboy warning Eric against getting involved in the affairs of the living. He implies that his own dark fate is the result of similar meddling, and he orders Eric not to help save Sarah for the risk of losing his immortality. Reintroducing that content in some form now can add a bit more tension to the reboot.

The Skull Cowboy has remained a popular character in «The Crow» fandom. There’s even a 2023 ebook exploring his backstory entitled «Skull Cowboy: Oath of Vengeance.» Bringing him back in the remake would put a different spin on the limits of Eric’s powers, and it would expand the supernatural lore in ways that fans have already shown a lot of love for.

For fans of the book, «Dune: Part Two» finally introduces Paul’s villainous rival, Baron Harkonnen’s vicious nephew Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, played with aplomb by «Elvis» star Austin Butler. While it made sense for Denis Villeneuve’s first «Dune» film to omit the character — as Feyd-Rautha’s story doesn’t start until the second half — his introduction in the sequel was much appreciated nonetheless.

However, while Butler gives a strong and memorable performance in «Dune: Part Two,» the film’s characterization of Feyd-Rautha is quite different than it is from the books. For one, his physical appearance is drastically altered, with author Frank Herbert describing Feyd-Rautha as «a dark-haired youth of about sixteen years, round of face and with sullen eyes.» In the film, Feyd is instead seemingly aged up considerably (Butler himself is 32 years old), and rather than dark hair, Feyd in «Dune: Part Two» is bald and sickly pale, looking like a sexier Nosferatu.

Even more extensive are the changes to Feyd-Rautha’s characterization from page to screen. Feyd is much more aggressive and physically threatening in the film — as evidenced when he beats up his brother Glossu Rabban «The Beast» Harkonnen (Dave Bautista) in a scene created for the movie — while in the book he’s depicted instead as charismatic, conniving, and politically cunning. Book-Feyd even almost outsmarts the Baron at one point in an attempted assassination plot, something Film-Feyd doesn’t seem capable of.

Sydney Sweeney throwing shade at «Madame Web» is fun to see, as it shows she can keep a smile after a public failure. She doesn’t mind poking fun at her other projects and how the public tends to perceive her. Directly after the «Madame Web» joke, Sweeney goes on to say, «But I do have a new film coming out called ‘Immaculate.’ I play a nun, so it’s perfect casting.» The sarcastic comment stems from the contrast of the actor playing a nun after various sexually adventurous characters. For example, her Cassie on «Euphoria» has many nude scenes, which make Sweeney feel more powerful, and things get pretty hot and heavy in «Anyone But You.» 

That segues into Sweeney poking fun at online rumors that she began a real-life tryst with her «Anyone But You» co-star, Glen Powell. At the end of her «SNL» monologue, she talks about how much she loves her fiancé and asks the camera to cut to him. It then cuts to Powell sitting in the audience. The affair between the actors may not have been true, but it’s nice to see that they can laugh about it (and presumably, Sweeney’s partner has a sense of humor about it, too). 

Outside of the monologue, several sketches from that night made use of Sweeney’s attractive looks, including one where she plays a Hooters waitress who makes excellent tips thanks to her personal (ahem) assets. After hosting «Saturday Night Live,» Sweeney has proven she’s more than just a pretty face. She’s downright hilarious and should get more comedic roles going forward. 

The inner turmoil of Jeffrey Hunter’s Pike can be seen in the «Original Series» episode «The Cage,» with Pike’s colleagues taking notice of his burnout. At one point, Senior Medical Officer Dr. Boyce chastises, «Chris, you set standards for yourself no one could meet. You treat everyone on board like a human being except yourself.» For his part, Pike seems to be contemplating retirement, telling Boyce, «I’m tired of deciding which mission is too risky and which isn’t. And who’s going on the landing party and who doesn’t. And who lives. And who dies.»

Thanks to the butterfly effect and the divergent decision tree flowchart of the Kelvin Timeline, Bruce Greenwood’s Pike seems to have averted that burnout — at least up to his early encounters with Kirk. Greenwood told the Star Trek website, «The central dilemma for Jeffrey Hunter is not the central dilemma for my Pike. I was fortunate in that regard, that I wasn’t playing the same conflicts.» Speaking with Star Trek Magazine, the actor stated, «They are almost opposites […] Yet you can look at it as though they are two sides of the same coin, because of the parallel universe.»

While Prime Timeline Pike longs for a life free from Starfleet responsibilities, Greenwood’s Pike isn’t free of burdens. They just take another form. According to Greenwood in SciFi Now (via Trek Movie), «My Pike doesn’t have an internal wrestling match the way the earlier one did, but he does have second thoughts and misgivings about the way Starfleet is training officers as by-the-book products that may not, at the end of the day, be what’s required for a great leader.»
