They just keep churning these Rick and Morty seasons out, don’t they? Adult Swim has announced that the seventh season of the cartoon smash will be premiering on Sunday, October 15, at 11 p.m. ET/PT. If you don’t have cable any more, episodes will be available for purchase online the day after they air on TV, and the whole season will be streaming at some point in 2024. 

It might be long in the tooth but Rick and Morty is still pretty dang popular. It was the highest rated comedy on cable throughout its last three seasons, has won a couple of Emmys, and has spawned countless merch that’ll be filling up thrift stores and landfills for decades to come. Adult Swim infamously renewed the show for like the rest of eternity back in the halcyon days of 20-whenever, so you can expect annual “Rick and Morty return date” news posts out of us for at least the next three years. 

Something that won’t be returning alongside Rick and Morty is the show’s co-creator, Justin Roiland. Adult Swim severed ties with the voice of Rick and Morty earlier this year after he was charged with two felonies stemming from a domestic abuse incident in 2020. (Those charges were dropped in March due to insufficient evidence.) Roiland was replaced by Dan Stevens in his other prominent voice role on Hulu’s Solar Opposites; Adult Swim hasn’t revealed who will be the new voices of Rick, Morty, and Roiland’s other Rick and Morty characters, but producer Steve Levy told a San Diego Comic Con audience that they’ll be casting soundalikes to replace the ousted creator. (Paste reached out to Warner Brothers about the changes but has received no response yet.)

Based on Leonie Frieda’s 2004 non-fiction book ‘Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France,’ Starz’s ‘The Serpent Queen’ is a period drama series created by Justin Haythe. It follows the life of Catherine de’ Medici, an Italian noblewoman born into the Medici family who is married as an orphaned teenager, expected to give birth to heirs and bring a hefty dowry. However, she finds out that her husband is already in love with an older woman. What makes matters even more complicated for her is when she discovers that she cannot conceive children.

Even after all these challenges, Catherine somehow manages to maintain her marriage and rule for three decades. By breaking the fourth wall, she lets the viewers in on her story and provides an immersive viewing experience, keeping us hooked on the series. Moreover, the setting of the 16th century and the backdrop of grand halls and palaces make one curious to learn about the filming sites of ‘The Serpent Queen.’ Well, if you are one such curious soul, you might be interested in what we have to share!

The Serpent Queen Filming Locations

‘The Serpent Queen’ is filmed in France and Italy, specifically in Marseille, Amboise, Chambord, Chenonceaux, Villandry, and Castel Gandolfo. The principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the historical series reportedly commenced in April 2021 and wrapped up in September of the same year. Even though the shooting for season 1 took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, it worked in favor of the filming unit, as the showrunner, Erwin Stoff, shared in a September 2022 interview with Cinemablend.

Stoff said, “The funny thing is, for as difficult as it was to shoot during COVID, it was actually very good to us. Because all those locations were places that no one had ever shot… because they’re usually overrun with tourists. So because of COVID, there were no tourists, and they were in desperate need of money. So we actually got to shoot in the rooms, hallways, and gardens where Catherine lived. So that was actually for us and for the show, an incredibly lucky break.” Now, without further ado, let us tell you all about the specific locations that appear in the series!

Marseille, France

The ‘The Serpent Queen’ team seemingly sets up camp in Marseille, France’s second most populous city, to shoot a few sequences for the series. Located on the coast of the Gulf of Lion near the mouth of the Rhône river, Marseille has its own unique culture that separates the city from the rest of the nation. It is also considered a regional cultural and entertainment center and home to many historical and maritime museums.

Amboise, France

Some important scenes for ‘The Serpent Queen’ are lensed in Amboise, a commune in central France. Located in the Indre-et-Loire department, it is famous for the Clos Lucé manor house, where the legendary Leonardo da Vinci lived. Furthermore, there is a historical 20th-century fountain made by Max Ernst right in front of the marketplace, attracting numerous tourists.

Other Locations in France

To portray the gigantic châteaus common in the 16th century, the cast and crew members of ‘The Serpent Queen’ utilize actual historical châteaus in different locations across France. Several pivotal sequences are taped on location in and around Château de Chambord in the commune of Chambord and Château de Chenonceau in the commune of Chenonceaux. In addition, Château de Villandry at 3 Rue Principale in Villandry serves as another prominent production location for the series.

Castel Gandolfo, Italy

For lensing purposes, the production team of ‘The Serpent Queen’ even stops in Castel Gandolfo, a town in the Lazio region of Italy. In particular, they utilize the premises of the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo on Piazza della Libertà to record the scenes set in Italy. In the interview mentioned above, Liv Hill (Catherine) also shared her experience shooting in the actual locations where her character once lived.

The actress said, “…Then when we went to Italy to film for five days, we were the first people to ever have filmed in the Papal Palace. So it was gorgeous. That was probably the highlight for me. I’ve never been on such luxurious set locations before, and I would never have probably done that had I not been an actress.”

The console release for Phasmophobia, initially slated for this month, has been delayed to the end of October following a fire incident at the office building of the game’s developer, Kinetic Games.

Kinetic Games posted the announcement of the delay to their Twitter yesterday, apologizing for the delay while explaining its causes. The entire development team is thankfully safe and unharmed.

“First and foremost, we’d like to thank you all for your support and that you are just as excited as we are for the console release,” their statement on Twitter reads. “Due to a recent fire incident in our office building and unpredicted development issues, our ability to test and develop has been significantly impacted. After careful consideration we have made the tough decision to delay the console release, initially set for August, while we get everything sorted. We are now aiming for a special launch during the week leading up to Halloween this October. This gives us the needed time to perfect and fine-tune everything. Your patience and understanding mean everything to us, and we can’t wait to bring Phasmophobia to consoles.”

The popular co-op horror game, originally released on Steam Early Access in October 2020, was announced to be coming to Xbox Series X|S and Playstation 5 at the Xbox Games Extended Showcase in June. The console version’s advertised features, including cross-play and VR features in the Playstation version, do not seem to be affected by this delay.

Nearly two years after the release of Season 2, Apple TV+’s prestige newsroom drama The Morning Show is finally coming back, and this time, UBA is facing down cyber attacks and tech billionaires. In the just-released full trailer, the series’ signature back-stabbing, in-fighting, and nail-biting tension all are on full display as The Morning Show comes back swinging.

Following the events of the second season, which tackled COVID and cancel culture head-on, Alex (Jennifer Anniston) and Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) are once again forced to work together in order to save the network, their TV empire, and their all-important reputations. According to the official synopsis, “the stakes are high as the future of the network is thrown into question and loyalties are pushed to the brink when a tech titan takes an interest in UBA. Unexpected alliances form, private truths are weaponized, and everyone is forced to confront their core values both in and out of the newsroom.” Once again seemingly pulling key issues straight from the headlines, this season’s examination of tech giants and the media feels particularly poignant in the wake of Elon Musk’s unpopular takeover of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Anniston and Witherspoon both return as stars and co-executive producers alongside newly-appointed showrunner Charlotte Stoudt, and director and executive producer Mimi Leder. Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, and fan-favorite Julianna Margulies star alongside new additions Jon Hamm and Nicole Beharie to round out the series’ star-studded ensemble cast.

Disney’s got a new boat. It’s called the Disney Treasure. It’s probably launching in 2024. We’re going to learn more next week, on Wednesday, August 30, during a streaming presentation on the Disney Parks Blog. If you’re a fan of Disney boats, there’s a good chance you’ll be a fan of this one. They’re good boats, typically. (I’m trying to write this as if I’m working for Axios, but I just couldn’t bring myself to use their weird headers. Just imagine this first paragraph is broken up into “state of news” and “does it matter” sections, or whatever.)

If you’re a regular reader of Paste’s travel section, or familiar with me as a person and a guy, you might know that I tend to like Disney stuff, at least the animation and the theme parks and the ball caps that I only wear inside the theme parks and especially the cartoon ducks. Disney Imagineering specializes in making cool, fun things, and as somebody who has somehow made something like a career out of writing about cool, fun things, particularly in the themed entertainment and amusement spaces, I wind up writing a lot about Disney. Their Parks, Experiences and Products division, commonly called Disney Parks, is at the top of the industry, and their work reaches deep beyond just the theme parks; you can see their fingerprints on Disney hotels, restaurants, stores, and, yes, boats. 

Sorry, not boats: cruise ships. This is a cruise line. Disney Cruise Line. Let’s get our language right. 

I’ve been on one Disney boat before. The Disney Wish launched last year with Disney Cruise Line’s first attraction at sea, a swank Star Wars-themed bar, a barber shop that serves a pretty great Smoked Old Fashioned, and some fantastic restaurants. I had a great time on the Wish, and if its level of quality is standard for the whole line, then I’d feel comfortable recommending a Disney cruise to anybody who has the interest (and financial ability) to go on one. 

Disney’s been a little tight-lipped on what to expect from the Treasure. We know the general theme is based around adventure, and that Minnie Mouse, who is officially the captain of the ship, will sport some new explorer-themed outfits. A teaser video shows Peter Pan, Miguel from Coco, Moana and that chicken she hangs out with, and the hitchhiking ghosts from the Haunted Mansion. A promo pack sent out to select journalists this week again references the Haunted Mansion, Coco, and Moana, while also clearly hinting at Spider-Man and the Jungle Cruise. I imagine we can expect stuff themed to all of those properties on the Treasure, just as the Wish has its Star Wars bar and It’s a Small World nursery. (If they’ve got a Haunted Mansion bar on this boat, I’d pretty much post up there the whole time I was on board. I’d be as much of an immovable fixture of that place as those dueling portraits are in the ride’s Grand Hall.) If those promo hints are any indication, I’m glad to see Disney continue to take inspiration from classic theme park attractions like the Haunted Mansion and the Jungle Cruise, and not just focus on more broadly known concepts from Marvel or Disney’s animated films. Given the theme of adventure, and the fact that boats tend to live on water, it’d be nice to toss a bone to all the old-timers out there who still fondly remember 1950’s Treasure Island and 1954’s 20000 Leagues Under the Sea—two pivotal live action Disney films that hold up remarkably well 70 years later, one of which (20000 Leagues) long had a major presence in the theme parks.

But hey, it doesn’t pay to speculate. (Unless, like me, you are literally getting paid to speculate. And about a Disney cruise ship, of all things. This is a real job. I still feel like I’m getting away with something.) We’ll officially know more about the Disney Treasure next week, when Disney releases some more details through that live stream, potentially even when it’ll set sail and how to book passage and all of that practical info you need to get on board. In the meantime, here’s what the Treasure’s Grand Hall is going to look like.

Atari and PLAION announced the Atari 2600+, a new version of the retro console which allows original 2600 and 7800 cartridges to be played on new hardware.

The console is set for a release on November 17 this year, including the system itself, designed as a recreation of the original Atari 2600 aesthetically, as well as a CX40+ Joystick and a 10-in-1 games cartridge. The full package will cost $129.99.

The games included in the pack-in cartridge are Adventure, Combat, Dodge ‘Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, Realsports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball, and Yars’ Revenge. Additionally, the console will be compatible with a large subset of the original Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles’ libraries, with Atari providing a full list of the compatible titles on their website.

The console also features a number of new hardware improvements over the original, including HDMI output and widescreen compatibility.

In addition to the main console, there will also be a CX-30 Paddle Controller sold separately, costing $39.99 and including a 4-in-1 game cartridge with Breakout, Canyon Bomber, Night Driver, and Video Olympics. Atari will also be selling new physical copies of games for the console, including the brand new Mr. Run and Jump and an enhanced edition of Berzerk, both of which will be launch titles for the 2600+.

Netflix’s ‘The Imperfects’ is a science fiction series that tells the story of three 20-something individuals —Tilda Webber (Morgan Taylor Campbell), Abbi Singh (Rhianna Jagpal), and Juan Ruiz (Iñaki Godoy). All of them underwent treatment for a genetic condition and now take pills to negate the side effects of the said treatment. However, when the pills stop coming, they develop special abilities, impacting their lives. Desperate for a cure, the three protagonists embark on a journey to find the scientist who did this to them.

The Succubus, the Banshee, and the Chupacabra are what Abbi, Tilda, and Juan call each other, respectively, in relation to their individual powers. Here is everything you need to know about it. SPOILERS AHEAD.

What Is the Succubus?

Abbi is the Succubus in ‘The Imperfects.’ She excretes pheromones that sexually arouse people in her immediate vicinity and put them temporarily under her control. Abbi has struggled with her powers since the treatment because she has no control over who her pheromones affect. They don’t spare anyone — be it her friends, fellow students, or even relatives. It is heavily implied that she left home because her mother became affected by the pheromones.

In folklore and the Abrahamic religious tradition, a succubus is a demon or a supernatural entity that men see in their dreams. They seduce men often through sexual activities. Religious tradition warns humanity against such persuasion, asserting that it will bring forth the victims’ undoing. In recent representations, they are regarded more as a beautiful seductress, though the religious connotation still remains in many cases. According to ‘Zohar,’ the Jewish mystical treatise, and ‘Alphabet of Ben Sira,’ a Jewish satirical text from the medieval era, the first wife of Adam, Lilith, transformed into a succubus.

What Is the Banshee?

Tilda is the Banshee in ‘The Imperfects.’ Initially, the effects of Dr. Alex Sarkov’s synthetic cell manifests in her as enhanced hearing. But soon, she also develops the ability to create ultrasonic vibrations whenever she screams. In the course of the first season, these abilities grow, becoming more potent. She later can tell if someone is lying and kill people miles away over the phone.

The banshee traditionally belongs to Irish and Celtic folklore. Also known as “woman of the fairy mound” or “fairy woman,” the banshee is a female spirit that appears before a person’s death, and through her screams, she announces the impending death. Stories describe them having long, flowing hair — often red — and garbed in a green dress with a gray cloak over it. Their eyes have turned red because of the weeping.

What Is the Chupacabra?

Juan is the Chupacabra in ‘The Imperfects.’ The youngest among the three protagonists, Juan starts to experience blackouts, When he wakes up, he finds himself in the middle of nowhere, with blood on his clothes, hands and around his mouth. He realizes that he has been killing small animals and pets during the blackouts. He claims that he is the Terror of Tacoma — a Chupacabra. Later in the series, Juan ends up killing and eating people. He also realizes that the transformation happens when someone he loves is threatened.

Unlike the other two, the legend of the Chupacabras is fairly recent. It is part of the modern folklore in various regions of the Americas. The first alleged sightings took place in Puerto Rico in 1995, though the legend has been around since the 1970s. The name “Chupacabra” derives from the animal’s purported vampiric traits. It apparently drinks the blood of its victims, which are often livestock. As for the appearance, that varies depending on the region. In Puerto Rico and Latin America, the creature is believed to have a reptilian appearance, whereas people in the Southwestern United States claim it has dog-like features.

Created by Yoon Jong-bin and Kwon Sung-Hui, ‘Narco-Saints‘ is a crime drama series inspired by real events. The series follows Kang In-Gu, an ordinary businessman from South Korea who travels to the South American nation of Suriname. After his business plan fails, Kang is drawn into a plot to apprehend a notorious drug lord Jeon Yo-hwan.

Kang works closely with another drug supplier, Sangman, to lure out Jeon. Therefore, viewers must be wondering about Sangman and his motivations. Moreover, fans of K-dramas will find the actor playing the role familiar. If you are looking for answers about Sangman in ‘Narco-Saints,’ here is everything you need to know! SPOILERS AHEAD!

Who Plays Sangman in Narco-Saints?

Sangman is Kang’s partner in the plot to export cocaine from Suriname to South Korea and other Asian markets. The name is merely a false identity conjured by NIS agent Choi Chang-ho to lure Suriname’s drug lord and local cartel leader, Jeon, into a trap. After Kang’s shipment of skatefish is found to contain cocaine, he is arrested for smuggling. Chang-ho arrives to help Kang and reveals that Pastor Jeon is no ordinary pastor but a local drug lord.

As a result, Chang-ho seeks Kang’s help in tricking Jeon and arresting him. According to the duo’s plan, Chang-ho poses as Sangman, a Korean with capital who wants to supply Colombian cocaine to the Asian market. Thus, Sangman is the fictional figure that Jeon makes a deal with, leading to his eventual downfall. In the series, actor Park Hae-soo essays the role of Choi Chang-ho, aka Sangman.

Is Park Hae-soo in Squid Game?

Born on November 21, 1981, Park Hae-soo is a South Korean actor who began his acting career in 2007 by appearing in several musicals and stage plays. Park made his screen debut in 2012 with the Korean television series ‘God of War’ and appears as Kim Yun-hu. He made his feature film debut in 2014 by playing the role of Hwang Joong-Geun in the period action film ‘The Pirates.’ Park’s other credits include films such as ‘Master’ and ‘Minority Opinion.’

However, the actor rose to prominence with the lead role of Kim Je-hyuk in the black comedy crime series ‘Prison Playbook.’ After gaining recognition in his native land, Park gained international fame through his performance as the calm, clever, and calculated Cho Sang-woo in the hit thriller series ‘Squid Game‘ created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The series became one of Netflix’s most-watched releases and catapulted Kang to stardom.

Park is a familiar face for Netflix viewers, with his first collaboration with the streaming service coming in the form of the thriller film ‘Time to Hunt.’ The actor is also known for his role as Berlin in ‘Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.’ More recently, Park also appears in the Netflix original film ‘Yaksha: Ruthless Operations’ directed by Na Hyeon. His performance as Choi Chang-ho, aka Sangamn, in ‘Narco-Saints,’ allows viewers to see the actor in a new light with his law enforcement character, adding a fresh angle to the drug cartel story.

Sophia Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy, has announced Karaoke Night today, an EP of popular song renditions out September 22 via Loma Vista. Accompanying the announcement, she’s released her take on Taylor Swift’s, “I’m Only Me When I’m With You,” a beloved cut from the pop icon’s 2006 debut album. The track is stickier and sulkier in Allison’s signature ’90s-reminiscent vocal style, with a focus on drums and negative sonic space. She previously released a cover of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up The Sun” which will also feature on the upcoming EP, alongside tracks by R.E.M., Pavement and Slowdive.

Halloween season is fast approaching, and that means a recent yearly tradition is nearly upon us as well: The release of a new V/H/S entry. After first reviving the series via V/H/S/94, becoming a Shudder original in the process, the horror-centric streaming service has quickly turned the former theatrical horror anthology series into a cornerstone brand for itself … despite the fact that we argued last year’s V/H/S/99 was seriously straining the longevity of the format. Still, Shudder has soldiered on ahead with the latest entry, V/H/S/85, effectively rebooting the chronology of the series after the last entry was set at the twilight of the home video tape era. This latest entry is due to arrive on Shudder on Oct. 6, 2023.

As the official synopsis efficiently puts it: “An ominous mixtape blends never before seen snuff footage with nightmarish newscasts and disturbing home video to create a surreal, analog mashup of the forgotten ’80s.”

The potential saving grace, as is often the case, is a good assembly of filmmaking talent. It looks like we have five entries this time around, including one from series veteran David Bruckner (The Night House), who directed the well-like “Amateur Night” installment of the original V/H/S way back in 2012. Other segment directors for V/H/S/85 include Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone, Sinister, Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky) and Mike Nelson (Wrong Turn).

Can this quintet justify the horror anthology series continuing to churn out yearly installments? How many individual years can one stick after V/H/S before it becomes completely opaque as a naming convention? We’ll likely find out by Halloween, depending on this entry’s success. Parquet Courts’ co-frontman A. Savage is returning with his first solo album in six years. Several Songs About Fire is set to arrive October 6 via Rough Trade and serves as a proper follow-up to 2017’s Thawing Dawn. Earlier this summer, Savage unveiled the single “Thanksgiving Prayer.” Today, he’s offering up “Elvis in the Army,” a steady rocker that rivals any great post-punk clip from 40 years ago. Savage’s punctuated songwriting is on full display, as he riffs on displacement by way of Elvis’ military service.

Savage says of “Elvis in the Army”: “We often describe ourselves in geographic terms. American, New Yorker—two terms that I’ve used to identify myself that have to do with being from or of a certain place. So ‘Elvis in the Army’ is a bit of an inventory of those labels. They have less to do with geography than we realize. Really we’re just talking about ourselves, then framing certain characteristics geographically. No matter where I live I’ll have an American psyche until the day I die, for better or for worse. I’ll always be of America. And I can’t imagine a time where New York doesn’t feel like home. But despite that, I’d rather not be associated with a place, at least for now.”

Mitski has released two new tracks from her forthcoming album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, out September 15 via Dead Oceans. Both songs were pieced together in small creative bursts over the years and have existed in the songstress’s imagination long before they were released in final form. “Star” is just as cosmic as its title suggests, bathed in showers of ethereal organ amidst a healthy dose of Mitski’s perennially-nostalgic ache. “Heaven” is folksy and unhurried, passionate and yearning. “Now I bend like a willow thinking of you/Like a murmuring brook curving about you,” Mitski sighs in her singularly heart-rending lilt.

Sony released full details on their upcoming remote play-focused device, now officially titled Playstation Portal, in a blog post this morning.

The Portal, previously unveiled at Playstation’s May Showcase as “Project Q,” allows its users to play games installed onto their PS5 remotely, with the device containing an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen and a controller with all equivalent features to a normal PS5 DualSense controller.

The device is not fully portable—players hoping for something like the Nintendo Switch for a Playstation should curb their expectations. Using the Playstation Portal requires a Wi-Fi connection with at least 5Mbps to the PS5 in order to run games installed on the console, making it more equivalent to using a smartphone for remote play (or, for a less favorable comparison, the Wii U Gamepad). Rather than full portability, Playstation is advertising the Portal mostly on in-home convenience, calling it “the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house.”

The device will be able to play most PS5 games, though those requiring a VR headset, additional peripherals, or streaming via PS5 Plus are not compatible. Playstation plans to release the device later this year for $199.99, though they have not yet listed a specific release date

Alongside the Portal, Playstation released details on a number of new audio devices designed for compatibility with it. First are the Pulse Elite, a new wireless headset, and Pulse Explore, the company’s first official wireless earbuds. Both of these will feature noise-cancelling options, lossless audio, and planar magnetic drivers, and will retail for $149.99 and $199.99 respectively, though their release dates have yet to be revealed.

In addition, Playstation detailed Playstation Link, their new wireless audio technology. Playstation Link provides lossless and low latency audio, and allows Playstation audio devices to connect to multiple audio hosts simultaneously using a Playstation Link USB adapter.

Spanning his most prolific and critically acclaimed period as a filmmaker–which you can revisit in our long ranking of every John Carpenter movie –the new Anthology II is set for release Oct. 6, 2023 via Sacred Bones. Like other compositions from the artist in recent years, Carpenter produced these tracks with collaborators Daniel Davies and son Cody Carpenter.

By way of announcing the new album and its freshly recorded versions of Carpenter classics, Sacred Bones has released album opener “Chariots of Pumpkins” from cult classic Halloween III on YouTube, which you can see below. As the director puts it: “This piece was made for someone else’s movie, the Tommy Lee Wallace directed Halloween III. I don’t remember what his specific direction for me was for the main titles, but I wanted to reflect a kind of science fiction feel. The sound has been updated and it was fun to redo this song. The three of us using modern and updated sounds and production has influenced the overall feel of the song.”

Halloween III is just a tease, though–the full track list, which you can see below, also includes selections from the likes of Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog, Prince of Darkness and of course Halloween. Intriguingly, there’s also material from The Thing, despite the fact that the original score for that film was from spaghetti western legend Ennio Morricone. As the press release notes: “Among its highlights are the three lost cues from The Thing, previously unreleased and now re-recorded.
