Security cameras caught the entertaining moment California police had to chase a loose deer around a Sam’s Club this week as it refused to be caught.

Police in Corona, California shared the footage to social media yesterday, December 2. The scene looked like it could have been straight from a comedy movie scene, as an officer struggled to get close to the darting deer.

A deer police chase in the Sam’s Club

Carona Police Department said it received multiple calls from concerned locals throughout the morning and early afternoon on Thursday.

“The young buck ran through yards, jumped a wall, and took a brief dip in a backyard pool before entering a Sam’s Club on Ontario Avenue,” wrote the police on Instagram.

Despite having a tiring wild morning out, the buck wasn’t too exhausted to put the police through their paces while in the store.

Footage shared by the police department showed the “mastermind deer” pacing through the Sam’s Club (with Run Rudolph Run added as background music). The deer sped past a shopper who turned in surprise. An officer followed shortly after, running behind the deer through aisle after aisle.

Eventually, the deer halted and the police officer caught up with it. Officers stayed with the deer until animal control arrived at the scene. Animal control was later able to release the deer back into the wild where it belongs, rather than the snacks aisle.

Deers are decreasing in California

According to state statistics, deer are currently on the decrease in California. Estimates by officials report around 475,000 deer in 2023, pre-hunt season. However, the estimated deer kill from the annual hunt fell by around six percent from 2022 to 2023, pointing to a decline in population.

Roadkill reports also pointed to a decline in the amount of deer in road-kill incidents, once more indicating a decline in the overall population of deer in California.

Animals found in surprising places

The deer isn’t the only animal in the US trying to get its Christmas shopping in it would seem. In November, a bear made headlines across the country after a security camera caught the bear stealing from a store.

The early-rising bear entered the store at 6:30 a.m. and grabbed a pack of gummy bears with its mouth before running off without paying of course. A shop owner, who was behind the counter with his morning coffee at the time, told the media that the bear then went into the parking lot to devour the candy.
