Expert explains why not being hungry in morning could be bad for you

A nutrition therapist has explained why not being hungry in the morning is dangerous, and why it could mean your “metabolic adaptation” is working in the wrong direction.

Since we were kids, the fact that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” has been drilled into us almost as much as “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But still, there are those of us who survive on some caffeine alone or skip breakfast entirely.

Not being hungry in the morning is a clear warning sign

TikToker and health coach Clovis, @theclovisculture, took to the platform last week with a stark warning message. In a post which has since been viewed over 1.4 million times, Clovis replied to a follower’s comment about not being hungry in the morning.

He explained: “If you’re not hungry in the morning, when you first wake up, that’s a really important signal you’re getting from your body. There may be metabolic adaptation in the wrong direction.”

While the idea of metabolic adaptation may seem intimidating, it is simply “the body’s survival mechanism to ensure we have enough energy to perform essential functions.”

“There’s a lot of talk online about fasting and intermittent fasting and how it makes your hunger go away,” he explained. “That’s not a good thing – hunger is one of our most basic primal survival instincts.”

Clovis continued to state that we, as a society, need to stop looking at being hungry like it’s a bad thing. Your body is telling you that it needs something to work properly.

But what’s the fix?

Knowing there is an issue is the first step in rectifying any sort of issue. But now you’ve understood that it’s bad, what do you do?

Clovis recommends thirty grams of protein within thirty minutes of waking up. Great sources of early morning protein include eggs, protein powder in a smoothie, cottage cheese, salmon, and various meats.

Fans and followers shared their own experiences in the comments, with many admitting that they have never eaten breakfast

One person wrote: “I have never eaten breakfast in my life. My mom would force me and my sisters to eat breakfast but we just couldn’t. It seems too heavy to eat first thing in the morning. So, it would make me want to.”

“I heard someone else on here say it’s because your blood sugar is at a normal state and it’s a good thing,” another person said, to which Clovis responded, “I heard someone else on here say it’s because your blood sugar is at a normal state and it’s a good thing.”
