Fans have been re-examining lyrics from Lizzo’s 2021 hit Rumors after a lawsuit was filed against her by three former dancers. The lawsuit accuses Lizzo, real name Melissa Viviane Jefferson, of sexual harassment and of creating a hostile work environment.

Others who worked with Lizzo have also spoken up. Another former dancer, Courtney Hollinquest, shared an article about the lawsuit on social media and wrote: “For clarification, I’m not a part of the lawsuit – but this was very much my experience in my time there.” Following her post, Lizzo’s former creative director, Quinn Wilson, also commented on the situation. She said: “I haven’t been a part of that world for around three years, for a reason. I very much applaud the dancers’ courage to bring this to light. And I grieve parts of my own experience. I’d appreciate space to understand my feelings.”

Former dancers bring lawsuit against Lizzo

Three of Lizzo’s former tour dancers, Crystal Williams, Arianna Davis, and Noelle Rodriguez, filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against Lizzo. The suit also names her production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc and Shirlene Quigley, Lizzo’s dance captain.

According to the lawsuit, the dancers claims include of sexual harassment and of creating a hostile work environment in several incidents between 2021 and 2023.

It also claims false imprisonment and interference with prospective economic advantage. Not every claim was brought against each defendant.

In a statement, their lawyer Ron Zambrano said: “The stunning nature of how Lizzo and her management team treated their performers seems to go against everything Lizzo stands for publicly, while privately she weight-shames her dancers and demeans them in ways that are not only illegal but absolutely demoralizing.”

What does the lawsuit claim?

The dancers alleged that Lizzo criticized a dancer’s weight gain and fired the same dancer for recording a meeting, which she claims she was doing because she was suffering from an eye condition.

The lawsuit also alleges that Lizzo pressured a dancer to touch a nude performer in an Amsterdam club and urged the dancers to catch “dildos launched from the performers’ vaginas”.

Other claims include that dance captain Shirlene Quigley pushed her Christian beliefs upon the dancers. She allegedly shamed dancers for having premarital sex.

HITC and GRV Media have reached out to Lizzo and Shirlene Quigley for comment about the allegations. However, we did not receive an immediate response.
