The killer whale Tilikum was seen performing stunts in the water with SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau before it dragged her by her ponytail and drowned her.

The tragic incident which occurred in Florida in 2010 is considered to be one of the deadliest animal attacks in history, and the autopsy reportedly revealed the trainer died from multiple traumatic injuries on her body in addition to drowning.

Killer whale dragged Dawn Brancheau by her ponytail before drowning her

Dawn Brancheau had finished training the whale and they even had a “good session” before the tragedy struck.

The trainer was known for having long hair and on the day of the incident, she fashioned it in a high ponytail. She was petting the whale on the nose when her ponytail swung in front of him, according to Chuck Tompkins, curator of zoological operations at SeaWorld Orlando.

The whale is said to have grabbed her by the hair and kept her underwater until her last breath.

The autopsy report revealed that the trainer sustained fractures to her jawbone and other parts of the body. Her spinal cord was also said to be severed during the drowning.

To make things worse, Tilikum was apparently very aggressive after the attack and the rescuers couldn’t reach Dawn immediately. They had to coax the humongous whale into another pool and lift it out of the water using a platform before freeing Dawn from its grip.

Video shows Tilikum in water with the trainer before the attack

Dawn and Tilikum had just finished a good session before the attack and their final moments together can be found in the videos of their last performance.

An extended video from the show at SeaWorld captures the whale following the trainer’s commands and receiving his treats before she entered the water to do the “relationship session.”

Dawn was reportedly lying next to the whale when he suddenly dragged her further into the water.

At first, the guests thought it was a part of their act together until they realized the whale wasn’t letting go of the trainer.

The orca had claimed more lives before

Less than half of the trainers at SeaWorld were allowed to go near the orca or train him owing to the whale’s violent past.

He weighed over 12,000 pounds and was the biggest orca in the organization.

Apparently, he and two female killer whales had pulled another trainer underwater at a park in British Columbia in 1991. Another man was found dead on Tilikum’s back in 1999 after he snuck into the whale tanks at SeaWorld. Authorities reportedly said he was bitten by the killer whale.
