A brawl that broke out on the riverfront in Alabama on Saturday (August 5) has been nicknamed the ‘Montgomery Mollywop’ and people are saying it will go down in history.
Police responded to the incident on the 200 block of Coosa Street at around 7pm and videos of the fight have gone viral on social media that show people throwing punches on the dock.
Riverfront brawl breaks out in Alabama
The fight is believed to have broken out over a disagreement over where some boats were parked, leading many to physically attack a dock worker.
A viral video shows a white man punching a black man, who is believed to be the crew member, before a number of others join in the fight.
Police have issued multiple arrest warrants after the employee was pushed to the ground, punched and even attacked with a chair.
Officers “located a large group of subjects engaged in a physical altercation,” they said in a news release. “Several subjects have been detained and charges are pending.”
It’s been nicknamed the ‘Montgomery Mollywop’
On Twitter, people are calling the brawl the “Montgomery Mollywop,” which is a slang term for beating someone up and hitting them hard.
Urban Dictionary defines a Molly Wop as “to swing one’s arm back that it almost rips out of its socket and then proceed to completely knock out their face”.
The alliteration certainly gives the name a good ring, although the serious fight certainly isn’t something to joke about it.
“Last night, the Montgomery Police Department acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job,” Montgomery’s Mayor said in a statement.
“Warrants have been signed and justice will be served. This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred,” he continued.
“As our police department investigates these intolerable actions, we should not become desensitized to violence of any kind in our community.”
‘Battle of Montgomery 2023’ is a ‘historic event’
Some are even calling it the “Battle of Montgomery 2023” and joking the mega brawl will go down as a huge “historic event”.
The famous battle took place during the First English Civil War of 1642–1646 and fought to gain control of the castle of Montgomery, which controlled access to mid-Wales.
People are also making reference to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a political and social protest campaign against racial segregation on public transport from 1955 to 1966.
One person wrote: “The Montgomery Mollywop is an historic event in our nation.”
“Let this go down in history as The Montgomery Mollywop of 2023,” another said.
A third person added: “We’re literally gonna be discussing the Montgomery Mollywop for years to come.”
