Train passengers are set to face difficulties on September 1st due to the Aslef union taking strike action on that day. RMT’s train strikes will follow the Aslef one.
Train strikes have been going on in the UK for more than a year now. Since June 2022 several railway workers have been on strike on and off for pay raise to reflect the increasing inflation rates. The past few months have seen the strikes becoming fewer. But an upcoming strike on September 1st will cause a major disruption in UK’s transport network on that day and the next one.
Aslef union to hold train strikes on September 1
The Aslef union announced a strike on Friday, September 1. This along with an ‘action short of a strike’ on Saturday, September 2.
Hence, the drivers represented by Aslef will go on strike on September 1. Their union is also banning overtime shifts on a consecutive day on September 2. The overtime ban falls on the same day as RMT’s second walkout in a week.
Announcing the industrial action on August 18 the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) stated on its website that the strike will “seriously disrupt the network.” They say the reason for this is that “none of the privatized train operating companies employs enough drivers to provide a proper service without drivers working on their days off.”
However, Aslef’s general secretary Mick Whelan said that they don’t want to have to go on strike again. However, he also said that the train companies and the government backing them “refuse to sit down and talk to us and have not made a fair and sensible pay offer to train drivers who have not had one for four years – since 2019.”

RMT has two upcoming strikes too
While Aslef’s strikes will cause major disruption, their impact will be compounded by RMT’s two upcoming strikes.
One of the RMT strikes will be on Saturday, August 26. A second one is scheduled on Saturday, September 2. iNews notes that the RMT action will likely be on the same scale as its previous shutdowns in the past that affected majority of UK’s train networks.
