As the recently escalated Israeli Palestine conflict wages on in the Middle East, tensions surrounding the issue continue to run high in the West. Just this week, Uber Eats has been forced to defend itself after it was accused of showing pro-Israeli bias by a string of local businesses in Canada.

Levant is a local Palestinian restaurant in Toronto, and its owners claim it was subject to a category swap on the courier app Uber Eats which saw the food spot be re-labelled from the Palestine section to Israeli.

Speaking to a local news source, Levant co-owner Nader explained the app’s mislabelling felt like proof of “appropriation of Palestinian food and cuisine,” a phenomenon he claims has been occurring “for years”.

The restaurant claims Levant was not the only affected restaurant, with searches of the Toronto area on Uber Eats displaying at least 308 restaurants in the Israeli category, but just two under the Palestine category.

Levant went public with appeal

Taking to Instagram to make their feelings clear, the Levant management appealed to the public to call on Uber Eacts to sort the labeling issue. They wrote: “Palestinian restaurants, including ours, have shifted from the “Palestinian” cuisine to “Israeli” on their platform.

“This move attempts to erase Palestinian identity by actively contributing to the suppression of Palestinian cuisine on a global scale.”

The post received more than 17,000 likes and several hundred comments, largely in support of the Palestinian restaurant.

Uber Eats themselves commented on the post, writing: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We apologize for this experience, and we have escalated this to a specialized team to investigate.”

Uber Canada addresses the flag accusations

Speaking to Toronto-based CityNews, a spokesperson for Uber Canada, Keerthana Rang, apologized for the situation, writing: “We have expressed to Levant that we are deeply sorry about this unintentional issue.

“It has been fixed and our engineering teams have made a priority of understanding why this happened. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.”

In a further statement on Instagram, Levant thanked its patrons and supporters for rallying around the business, but stressed the restaurant was not satisfied with the response from Uber Eats, who they claim need to enhance their commitments to promoting Palestinian cuisine.
