The ‘AITA for not letting my cousin experience motherhood’ story has Reddit warning about the consequences of giving in to family members’ bizarre demands.
Reddit is filled with mind-boggling stories of family drama and relationship troubles and this one is no different. Many of the platform’s users shared their thoughts after reading an unbelievable story. It sees the OP facing family members who demand she loan her baby to a dying relative for a few weeks.

OP’s cousin wants her baby for a few weeks
The OP reveals in her post that she has a 22-year-old cousin by marriage who is dying of cancer. “It was always her dream to marry and be a mom and now that’s not going to happen,” she reveals. The cousin also has a fiance, 30. They had a symbolic wedding ceremony to give the cousin an experience of getting married.
Her family then began looking to have access to a baby for a few weeks. This would help her fulfill her dream to experience motherhood. However, unsurprisingly, they have had difficulty finding a baby.
“There’s not a lot of ways to do that safely,” the OP notes. The OP and her husband are the only new-generation couple to have children in the family so far. They have two kids: a 23-month-old and a 10-month-old.
The OP had feared that, once the cousin’s parents ran out of alternative ways to fulfill her dying wish, they would turn to her. The cousin’s parents asked the OP if they could borrow her 10-month-old for “a few weeks.” The cousin and her fiance want to role-play as parents with their baby. They will do photoshoots and the cousin’s parents will also join in.

‘AITA for not letting my cousin experience motherhood’ deemed ‘creepy’
The OP notes how this all makes her really uncomfortable and how it is “creepy.” She also empathizes with the cousin who won’t get to live her dream but still believes that this is not the answer.
“I’m worried it will be traumatic for my baby. She’s almost a year old and will, well, notice that her entire family will just vanish overnight for what will seem like forever” the OP says.
She also notes how it’s a dangerous precedent to put her child into guardianship. Hence the OP said no to the cousin’s parents, who are hounding her now. They accuse the OP and her husband of being selfish because the cousin’s time is running out. They then offer “actual dollar amounts” for the OP to give up her kid for a few weeks.
The OP and her husband then filed a police report and informed the husband’s parents and siblings about what was going on. The husband’s family has blocked the cousin’s family on social media now.
Reddit users weigh in
“You are never the asshole for not loaning your baby for a 3-week make-believe photo shoot,” said a Reddit user. They further say, “What your cousin is going through is tragic but this is insane. Hard no and never feel guilty about this.”
“Man, that’s just messed up for so many reasons. Don’t put your family through hell due to your extended family’s lapse in sanity. Kid should come first,” said a second user.
A third user warned if the OP gave up her kid, the pictures from the photoshoot the cousin’s family does could backfire on her. “I can’t even imagine what would happen with those pictures down the road….imagine having to look at it at Christmas???” the said.
“Yeah… imagine being the kid and seeing all these pictures of them as an infant with their parents and then cut to the same baby with different parents… wtf?” said another person.
