While Rhys Frake-Waterfield thought some reviewers’ comparisons of «Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey» to Marvel films were unfair, he said he has learned how to deal with criticism of his work. «To be honest, you’ve got to have a really, really thick skin to be a filmmaker because you get heavily, heavily criticized regardless of the means and the resources you have,» he told SFX.

Where the twisted adventures go after «Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2» is anybody’s guess. One idea Frake-Waterfield toyed with during his interview would be to combine the worlds of Winnie the Pooh and another famed book-turned-Disney-animated-classic — this time about an orphaned deer – that entered the public domain in 2022. «We need to see what the appetite is, but we could do some absolutely crazy stuff, like a crossover between Bambi and Winnie the Pooh,» the director told the publication. «That could go incredibly mad. I need to sit down and think how mad we want to go with it! We could have Winnie riding Bambi!»

Frake-Waterfield could also conceivably do a horror film based on Steamboat Willie, who entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. However, it seems Steven LaMorte beat Frake-Waterfield to the punch, as he is slated to direct the darker take on Mickey Mouse’s animated debut.

One of the reasons why the first «Dune» was so successful was its mix of sound stages and real-life locations. A decent portion of both films were shot in Abu Dhabi and Jordan to create a desert that felt both lived-in and real. In a chat with The New York Times before the release of the first «Dune,» director Denis Villeneuve discussed that it was important for his mental sanity to film in the desert. «You cannot do that with green screens,» he said about using real-life locations. «It’s not possible. Not for me. Maybe some people can, but not me.» 

Filming in the desert has its fair share of challenges, as highlighted by Austin Butler. However, the actor was only brought on board for «Dune: Part Two,» limiting his time in Abu Dhabi. This wasn’t the case for Timothée Chalamet, who has been with «Dune» since the beginning. While speaking with Stephen Colbert to promote the first picture, Chalamet talked about how filming would happen at specific times so the cast and crew could beat the desert heat. «[…] it would get so hot during the day that sometimes you had to shoot between 5 AM and 7 AM and 5 PM and 7 PM,» he said, adding that the suits used by the characters to traverse through the desert were ironically bulky and sweaty, making filming particularly challenging. 

As eager as Villeneuve was to film in the desert, he was also happy to have gotten a break between productions. «Both movies were made in very harsh conditions, and it’s very physically taxing, so to have a break in between them was a blessing,» the director told Entertainment Weekly.

During her conversation with Business Insider, Linda Hamilton questioned the very premise of a Terminator franchise reboot, albeit before acknowledging that Hollywood largely revolves around reworking existing IP nowadays. In a separate interview with UPI also promoting «Resident Alien» Season 3, she praised the original «Terminator» movies for their lasting relevance in spite of their old age. It’s perhaps because she still thinks the first films are thematically resonant, then, that she finds the prospect of a reboot to be unnecessary.

«The movies were ahead of their time because they did predict a certain reality that might come into fruition,» she said. «We know there is a real threat from AI… I didn’t write [‘The Terminator’]. I don’t get to be the soothsayer that warned everyone. I embodied the soothsayer and it’s kind of interesting to be that person right now.»

So, even if Hamilton is uninterested in playing Sarah Connor in a new project, she does appreciate the fact that the first two Terminator films have become somewhat prophetic in hindsight. Nevertheless, it seems she’s content to leave her contributions to the classic and prescient franchise in the past.

Overall, critics are immensely pleased with Denis Villeneuve’s second Dune installment. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star encouraged viewers to see the film in IMAX. «The movie fairly throbs with conflicts and intrigues, all the more so if you see it on an IMAX screen with the deep bass of Hans Zimmer’s majestic score rumbling through your body,» they wrote in a perfect review. 

Other critics, like /Film reviewer Chris Evangelista, want to emphasize how monumental of a theatrical experience «Dune: Part Two» is. «It’s a grand, overwhelming sensory experience,» Evangelista wrote in their 7/10 review. «Villeneuve has a great grasp on scale, and everything here feels appropriately huge.» Even CNN critic Brian Lowery emphasized how visually stunning the film is in a more mixed take. 

From a purely technical perspective, there’s a lot to like in «Dune: Part Two.» Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent discussed the film’s evocative spectacle in a five-star review, writing, «There are moments in ‘Dune: Part Two’ that feel so audacious, they play out as if they were already etched onto the cinematic canon.» She praised Villeneuve’s ability to gracefully adapt Frank Herbert’s vision, adding that the filmmaker has already «made his mark on sci-fi history.» 

While several critics like «Dune: Part Two,» others love the picture, calling it one of the best sci-fi films ever made. «It’s a towering feat of sci-fi cinema that will put ‘Dune: Part Two’ in contention for the pantheon of greatest sequels ever,» wrote Hoai-Tran Bui of Inverse.

Some critics didn’t mind «Players,» with many calling it a decent offering that’s worth a watch if you’re in the mood for a modern romantic comedy. The New York Times was particularly enthusiastic about the film, with critic Alissa Wilkinson writing, «‘Players’ is an old-fashioned romantic comedy, which means you know the end from the start. That’s not a bug; it’s a feature, a well-deployed one in this case.» 

Seeing as it’s dominating Netflix, the film is definitely worth a watch for those who want to keep up-to-date with contemporary romantic comedies. But popularity doesn’t necessarily equate to positivity. Audiences are mostly mixed on «Players,» which focuses on Mack (Rodriguez) finally deciding that she’s ready for a relationship. It has a 51% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning mixed-to-positive feedback. Over on the film social media site Letterboxd, the film boasts a 2.6 rating out of five. Dig deeper into the reviews and the general consensus from viewers seems to suggest that «Players» is just a middle-of-the-road fare that doesn’t offend. «Amusing; cheesy; light; predictable; watchable; well-cast,» wrote Letterboxd user joshrowley in a 3-star review. 

«Players» isn’t a romantic comedy classic, but it’s good enough Tuesday night viewing for those in the mood for something light. And for what it’s worth, Rodriguez, who also executive produces the film, is just excited to be part of a genre that doesn’t show any signs of stopping. «Well, I think rom-coms are timeless,» she told Bustle. «They last forever. We love them because we love to laugh and we love to cry.» Amen. 

Several YouTubers have also uploaded videos to show off the modded gameplay, including ToastedShoes. The channel has uploaded several fight bouts, with the first one featuring everyone’s favorite new public domain character, Steamboat Willie, aka the first appearance of Mickey Mouse. He trades blows with Minnie Mouse, and it doesn’t take long before she goes for the jugular. Some, like @mds_main in the comments, think this could be just the beginning of a more violent Steamboat Willie. «They should really put Steamboat Willie Mickey in Mortal Kombat for real,» they wrote. «It would be both hilarious and legal especially since it wouldn’t even infringe the trademark.»

While Steamboat Willie is fair game, that doesn’t account for every other Disney character in the lineup, like Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Olaf. And YouTuber @TheLeetCasualGamer thinks it’s not long before the mod is taken down: «Disney is going to take you to court for publicizing violence with their characters.» Similar sentiments were shared on a Reddit thread about «Disney Kombat,» where u/Vortr8 wrote, «Disney: we would like to know your location.»

Despite some fans wanting a legit game of this, it seems unlikely. It’s even doubtful Disney would make a less violent game in the style of «Super Smash Bros.,» as the company likely wants to retain the image that all these characters are friends who would never fight each other. For now, people who are into this kind of thing will have to make do with the mod … for as long as it stays available.

While the history of video game films may be fraught with failures, «Borderlands» has all the ingredients to succeed. This starts with what is undeniably an A-list cast. Cate Blanchett will step into the role of Lilith, one of six Sirens in the universe of «Borderlands.» Kevin Hart will play Roland, who was in the main soldier class in the first game. Jack Black will portray Claptrap, a loud and energetic robot that guides players throughout all three games. Filling out the rest of the cast is Jamie Lee Curtis as Patricia Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Édgar Ramírez as Atlas. 

However, it’s worth noting that Roth comes from a horror background so while this trailer might look like fun n’ games, there’s a likely chance that this adaptation will ratchet up its gore levels. Whatever else can be said about the film, «Borderlands» is going all out with its extensive cast of well-known actors. Whether or not that translates to a movie that both fans and general audiences turn out for remains to be seen, but hopefully, this can be the video game adaptation to break the curse.

I’ve long described Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic approach to «Dune» as an attempt to make «2001: A Space Odyssey» and «Lawrence of Arabia» at the same time, combining the bold sci-fi imagery of the former with the desert imperialism drama of the latter. «Dune: Part Two» goes further into both of those comparisons; Stanley Kubrick’s «Star Baby» is homaged through surreal shots inside the womb of Lady Jessica (Rebecca Fergusson), and Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is now fully in the T.E. Lawrence-esque «going native» part of his story arc. While Villeneuve’s style has traditionally leaned towards Kubrickian detachment, the story of «Dune: Part Two» pushes him closer to the more emotional strengths of David Lean’s work.

The early goings of «Dune: Part Two» also invite another movie comparison that might come more unexpected: «Monty Python’s Life of Brian.» Obviously, this isn’t a farce like the Python film — though there is more humor here than you might expect from the generally serious tone — but there’s a similarly critical approach to Messianic mythology and religious fervor, and some scenes play out as just slightly more serious versions of «Life of Brian» scenes. Is Paul Atreides the Lisan Al-Gaib, or a very naughty boy? The answer might very well be both.

How we’re supposed to feel about Paul at this point is complicated. Do we view him as a hero or a villain? Are we rooting for him to get revenge on the grotesquely evil Harkonnen family or afraid he’ll become just like his enemies? Is he helping the Fremen as their equal or acting as their savior to use them for his own ends — and to what ends are the Bene Gesserit using him? Chani’s role is important for providing a lens through which to look at Paul: She’s critical of this outsider coming in as a savior to her people and skeptical of all the prophecies surrounding him, and yet she knows she’s caught up in these prophecies with him — and damn it, she falls in love with him despite her doubts. In «Part One,» Zendaya does a lot with very little screen time; in «Part Two,» she’s the tragic heart of the whole movie.

From «Descendants» and «Grown Ups» to «Jessie» and «Paradise City,» Cameron Boyce’s fame stems from his work as a performer, but he wanted to use his high-profile status to contribute as a humanitarian. A Disney Channel spokesperson told People, «From a young age, Cameron Boyce … was fueled by a strong desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives through his humanitarian work. He was an incredibly talented performer, a remarkably caring and thoughtful person and, above all else, he was a loving and dedicated son, brother, grandson and friend.» Before his passing, Boyce lent his abilities to Thirst Project, a non-profit organization whose aim is to provide safe drinking water to suffering communities.

In his stead, Victor and Libby Boyce are using their son’s posthumous platform to champion medical awareness for epilepsy. The couple created the Cameron Boyce Foundation, a company that strives to fund the National Institute of Health’s epilepsy research. They also filmed a PSA for K(NO)W SUDEP NOW. «We really feel strongly that we need to have this conversation because epilepsy is the most common disease that we know the least about,» Mrs. Boyce told People. «So we want to bring in donations … and have as many conversations as we can so that we can make epilepsy have the attention that [it] so needs and deserves.»

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Cameron Boyce Foundation has raised over $1 million for epilepsy research, the global water crisis, and the creative arts.

Kevin Smith’s story about Harvey Weinstein effectively preventing a «Dogma» sequel isn’t the only one about the Miramax co-founder’s adverse actions against various actors and filmmakers. Before sexual abuse allegations and convictions ended his Hollywood career, he clashed with numerous people in the industry, and several accounts of his misconduct have come out. He harassed numerous stars — including A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie — and was known to bully his underlings and actors alike. «Dogma» star Salma Hayek’s description of Weinstein’s on-set behavior, for instance, features numerous instances of harassment and threats.

Weinstein also had a penchant for forcing his own vision on filmmakers. Some of them could weather the changes he wanted to make with outside help. These include «Tár» writer-director Todd Field, whose first movie, «In the Bedroom,» survived Weinstein’s meddling after he called Tom Cruise for help and the superstar gave him tips on how to handle the executive. 

Others, like Hayao Miyazaki, took the then-Miramax boss head-on and refused to budge. «I did go to New York to meet this man, this Harvey Weinstein, and I was bombarded with this aggressive attack, all these demands for cuts … I defeated him,» he told The Guardian, referencing Weinstein’s demands for the U.S. version of the 1997 film «Princess Mononoke.» Unfortunately, a different fate befell Smith when it came to «Dogma,» and the filmmaker doesn’t seem too hopeful about a sequel happening in the foreseeable future.

In films like «Mad Max: Fury Road» and «Atomic Blonde,» Charlize Theron has fought against and dealt out jaw-dropping violence with astonishing skill and gravitas. But the Oscar winner found herself in a real-life fight for her life in her native South Africa, and one which ended with a familial tragedy. In a 2019 interview with NPR, Theron recalled the violent impact of her father’s alcohol addiction on her family.

«It was a pretty hopeless situation,» she said. Her father’s addiction issues left them in a constant state of anxiety, wondering when it would bloom into physical violence. That tension finally reached a boiling point when Theron was 15. Her father threatened Theron and her mother, Maritz, with a gun, and even fired shots into a room where they were hiding. «None of those bullets ever hit us, which is just a miracle,» she explained. To save herself and her daughter, Theron’s mother fired back with her own weapon, killing her husband. Charges were not filed because Maritz had acted in self-defense.

Theron has spoken openly about the experience in hopes of supporting others who might be in similar situations. «I’m not ashamed to talk about it, because the more we do talk about these things, the more we realize we are not alone in any of it,» she said.

The idea of «Madame Web» as an origin story came up in an interview TheWrap conducted with several of the film’s actors. When discussing how they only appear in Spider-suits during clairvoyant visions, Isabela Merced said it didn’t bother her not to suit up in the present. «This is supposed to be an origin story,» she stated. «It wouldn’t be an origin story if we saw us in like, half the movie with our suits on. I like that it’s a little tease, and I like that it leaves people wanting more.» Sadly, it seems to have done the opposite where no one is clamoring for «Madame Web 2.» And it likely comes down to too much teasing and not enough paying off.

The concept of Chekhov’s gun states that all elements of a story must be relevant; namely, if a gun is introduced at the beginning of a story, it needs to be shot by the end. «Madame Web» has a scene toward the beginning where Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) has a vision where he’s killed by the three future Spider-Women. We see them in costume and using various powers. That would seem to suggest we might see them actually in Spider-suits, using their powers in something that isn’t a vision by the end. Instead, «Madame Web» concludes with a future vision of the girls in costume, alongside Cassie, who now has a better handle on her powers. However, it’s just a suggestion of what might happen. 

One could argue whether Madame Web is the kind of character who needed an origin story to begin with. Even if she did, there was a better way to go about it.
