Lewis MacLeod looks much friendlier than the menacing Sebulba. Even his ordinary voice may not seem like it could produce the Dug’s gravelly tone. But that’s the skill inherent in being a voice actor. MacLeod spoke with Gravy for the Brain in 2017 about what it was like to join the Star Wars franchise so early in his career. «I was in my mid-20s … it was still one of those dream jobs … to get Star Wars. You know, you pay them to get a part in that film.»

The actor also demonstrated how tough it was to do Sebulba’s voice, as the alien’s speaking manner is a far cry from the Scottish brogue Macleod has in his day-to-day life. He showcased the two types of voices needed for «The Phantom Menace,» the first being how the character talks normally: «You can’t speak for very long because it hurts your throat.» The second was needed during the podracing scenes where Sebulba has to shout over all the noise. MacLeod spoke with director George Lucas about doing something other than simply yelling. They ended up with a higher-pitched voice. 

Sebulba may have lost the Boonta Eve Classic, but he won fans’ hearts. He’ll forever be a great minor antagonist in the Star Wars universe, and it’s in large part thanks to MacLeod.

Dave Franco confirmed that his wife’s predilection towards streaking had indeed come back in full force. «She did it in the hotel right before we got here,» Franco said in the same Hollywood Reporter interview. An Instagram post corroborates the tale, with a nude Alison Brie trying to alleviate her husband’s pre-premiere jitters. «Get out of the hall,» he urges in the video, with Brie retorting, «I’ve done three laps already!»

For Franco and Brie, nudity was more than a source of levity, or in Brie’s case, a walk down memory lane. It’s also crucial to Ally’s self-discovery. At the end of «Somebody I Used to Know» (spoilers incoming!), Ally reconnects with her passion for documentary filmmaking on a project about a nudist colony. To put her interview subject at ease, Ally — as well as the rest of her crew — eschews her own clothes.

«[The nudity] became this perfect metaphor for Ally’s journey as she goes through the movie, essentially trying to find her way back to her essence, the most bare form of who she is as a person,» Brie continued.

Many audiences likely first became acquainted with Eva Green through 2006’s James Bond movie, «Casino Royale.» It was Daniel Craig’s first foray as 007, and he needed a Bond girl who could keep pace, which Green did in spades as Vesper Lynd. It remains a high point in her filmography, but Green almost didn’t want to audition because she thought the role would simply require her to look sexy and nothing else. In a 2016 interview with W Magazine, she described her thought process: «At first, when they approached me, I thought it would be me wearing a bikini and being beautiful, so I said I wouldn’t audition. Then they sent me the script, and I saw that Bond was falling in love with my character — that she was sensitive and full of secrets. I could understand that.»

Green wants to ensure that if her beauty factors into a film, it serves a purpose. Or at the very least, there should be something more to a character than merely appearing as a sexual object. Speaking to W Magazine, she echoed her comments from previous interviews about how filming such moments is in contrast to her personality. «I am so shy, and, at the same time, I kind of expose myself literally to thousands of people,» she pointed out. «I don’t really understand why I do that. I need to go through therapy!»

While Eva Green’s career has been somewhat defined by nudity, it’s by no means something she’s leaping to do. Hopefully, she will continue picking engaging characters to play. 

«The End of Evangelion,» the 1997 movie follow-up to the «Neon Genesis Evangelion» TV anime, has no shortage of graphic and disturbing imagery. Notably, mecha pilot Rei spends half the movie naked, giant, and slowly melting as she kills the entire planet — but «half the movie» doesn’t count as a scene, so if we must single out a single short sequence of nudity as the most upsetting in the film, we’re going to go with the opening scene.

At the start of the film, Asuka is comatose in the hospital. Shinji, traumatized over killing Kaworu in Episode 24 of the TV series, is visiting her and desperately pleading for her to wake up. Shinji shakes Asuka so hard that her breasts are exposed. After a series of cutaways to the ceiling, Asuka’s vital monitors, her IV drip, and the locked door, we’re subjected to the image of Shinji’s hand in which it’s clear that he’s pleasured himself. The more literal Netflix translation has Shinji follow up masturbating to his comatose co-worker by saying, «I’m the lowest of the low,» while the Manga Entertainment release uses the blunter localization of «I’m so f***ed up.» The hospital sequence sets the scene for a «f***ed up» film that’s going to put both its characters and its audience through the wringer.

If you’ve watched terrifyingly disturbing films like «Come and See» or «Schindler’s List,» you might think that you’ve seen it all as far as the terrors that occurred during the fascist dictatorships of World War II. If you’re brave enough to attempt to endure «Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom,» you’ll almost certainly discover that you were wrong.

Like «A Serbian Film,» the premise of «Salo» is basically used as an excuse to show as many depraved and harrowing acts on film as humanly possible. Both men and women are raped and sexually assaulted with impunity, and anyone who attempts to escape or fight back is summarily murdered.

This is just the beginning, though. There are scenes where the many victims who have been abducted by Italian fascists are forced to eat excrement. And, in perhaps the film’s most horrific moment, the surviving abductees begin turning on one another in hopes of currying favor with their captors.

The remaining victims are killed through means like scalping, dismemberment, burning, and … well, you get the idea. Of the movies on this list, «Pink Flamingos» and «Salo» are the two that have the most favorable reputation with critics, but you’re going to really have to test your mettle if you want to watch any of these five mind-scarring films. On the other hand, maybe sit down with something like «Amelie» or «Paddington» if you want to cleanse your mind of everything you just read.

Taylor Lautner’s advice for the next Jacob Black on the «Twilight» TV show represents quite a bit of growth and self-reflection since his time appearing in the franchise’s film series. In the past, the actor has opened up about the difficulties that came with his rapid rise to stardom at 16 years of age — and the challenge of leaving it behind. «In the moment, it got frustrating because you just wanted to live a normal life,» he once told The TODAY Show. «But then when that’s taken away from you at all you start to question yourself.»

Despite the performer’s conflicted feelings about his time with «Twilight» in the past, he told SiriusXM’s «TODAY Show Radio» that he has nothing but fondness for his memories of the franchise now. «I was always incredibly thankful and feel super blessed for what it brought me, but maybe there was a little bit of resentment deep in there,» Lautner said. «Now, I wouldn’t change it, but I think it needed the growth to get to that place.»

With Lautner’s personal journey to accepting his history with «Twilight» complete, it seems that he’ll be rooting for the new series first and foremost as a fan. «I’m very excited to see what they have in mind with the show,» he said during his Collider interview. «Truthfully, I wish I could give you some exciting secrets, but I truly know nothing. But no, I’m excited to see what they do with it.»

«Harry Potter» fans have wanted the «Star Wars» actor to play Snape ever since word of a «Harry Potter» series began to manifest. But while Adam Driver would more than likely kill it as the character, there’s one thing getting in the way: his nationality. «Harry Potter» may have found an audience worldwide, but the franchise is proudly British, and it’s hard to imagine Warner Bros. Discovery and J.K. Rowling casting an American to take on one of the most important characters in the saga since when it came time to bring «Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone» to the big screen, Rowling was adamant that the film cast exclusively British actors.

The franchise creator is serving as an executive producer on the upcoming Max series, which means she’ll have a lot of sway over casting decisions and could double down on the requests she had the first time the «Harry Potter» series was adapted. And while Driver is absolutely perfect for Snape and could make a worthy successor to Alan Rickman, Rowling isn’t likely to break this rule for what’s set to be the definitive adaptation of her books. Moreover, even if the actor were approached for the role, it seems unlikely that he would take it on. Max’s «Harry Potter» series is expected to run for 10 years, which would mean a decade of Driver’s life would be dedicated to the Boy Who Lived.

Erik von Detten’s role as Sid in the Toy Story franchise is far from his only time working for Disney. His resume under the Mouse House includes such films and TV shows as «Escape to Witch Mountain,» «Hercules,» «Brink!» «Tarzan,» and «Recess.» Disney diehards will likely recognize him from 2001’s «The Princess Diaries,» where he portrayed Josh Bryant, the classroom crush of high school student-turned-high royalty Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway). 

Von Detten has been out of the spotlight for some time now, with his latest role being his Sid cameo in 2010’s «Toy Story 3.» For the former performer, keeping a steady acting career was not easy. As he told E! News in a 2021 interview, «I would literally go for a length of time without any roles that I fit the bill for … You’re either in the very top half a percent doing very well or, well … it’s just very competitive.» Despite his best efforts, exiting the entertainment industry was something von Detten needed to do to pursue the life he envisioned. «Since I was a kid, I wanted to have a large family. And, in Los Angeles, that requires a consistent, realistic income. So, the fickle nature of employment as an actor just wasn’t consistent enough for me.» 

Von Detten has gone on to have a fruitful management career at a commodities brokerage and shares his life with his wife Angela and their three kids in Los Angeles. Asked if he’d ever consider returning to the acting world, von Detten told E! News, «Absolutely … if there’s a script with a role that doesn’t require an arduous audition process, I’m definitely open.»

The twist-filled erotic thriller «Wild Things» is the type of sleazy, campy film that forces you to suspend your disbelief in more ways than one. Not only do you have to believe an outcast high school student is capable of orchestrating an intricate scheme involving blackmail, manipulation, and even murder — including her own — but in the movie’s infamous threesome scene, there’s also the challenge of accepting that while Denise Richards’ character is fully exposed, the only man in the mix doesn’t show a single inch below the waist. 

Instead, the most male full-frontal nudity you get in a movie that has no problem objectifying its female characters is a brief shower scene where Kevin Bacon’s character, Ray, lets the towel slip for a little peek. «I honestly really didn’t think about it. I said, ‘If that’s the shot, that’s the shot that works, it’s [okay].’ I just didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal,» Bacon admitted to HuffPost.

In another instance of the film’s skewed portrayal of nudity, the original screenplay featured another element of the shower scene that hinted at a homosexual relationship involving Ray and Sam (Matt Dillon) that mirrored the manipulative dynamics seen between the female characters. However, Bacon disclosed to Total Film that this scene was removed from the script before filming due to objections from the financiers, who deemed it too controversial. «They felt it went too far. They felt it wasn’t right,» he stated, highlighting the irony of the situation.

Reviews of the blue milk sold at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge aren’t glowing, but it’s nothing compared to what Mark Hamill endured when drinking the real stuff. In a 2019 tweet, the beloved actor praised the Galaxy’s Edge rendition and shared what it was like to guzzle the beverage while filming the original «Star Wars.» «Honestly though: the warm, oily, sickly-sweet milk dyed blue from the movie was gag-inducing.»

There is a reason for its bitter flavor. According to Hamill in a 2018 interview with RadioTimes, the original blue milk was a special liquid known as long-life milk. As its name implies, the beverage can withstand being left without refrigeration longer than traditional milk. Since many Tatooine scenes were shot in arid desert landscapes, keeping regular milk fresh during a long day of shooting would have been impractical.

Nevertheless, warm, runny milk in any scenario is no fun to drink, but Hamill wanted to prove himself. «But I said, ‘Look — if they gave me blue milk, you bet I’m going to drink it on camera, because what other chance am I going to get?,’» he told RadioTimes. «So there’s an indication that I’m an underrated actor — I gulped it and acted like I liked it without vomiting.» Fortunately, downing the green milk from «The Last Jedi» was far less grueling, with Hamill noting that he drank coconut water, which was later altered in post-production to appear green.

Madame Web tends to be a useful ally to Spider-Man, as she can help him with cases thanks to her power to see things other people can’t. And she’s not the first person within fiction to do this. In fact, the «Blind Seer» archetype is well-worn at this point, dating back to Greek mythology. In Homer’s «Odyssey,» Tiresias is a prophet blinded by the goddess Athena, who then grants him the power to gaze into the future. There’s something inherently symbolic to have someone who can’t see in a physical sense but is able to witness different things that others can’t. Numerous books, TV shows, and movies have relied on this trope, so Madame Web follows in a grand tradition going back centuries of powerful blind clairvoyants.

Even though Madame Web has gone through several permutations, blindness is generally an integral component of her character even when someone other than Cassandra Webb assumes the mantle. In «The Amazing Spider-Man» #637, from Joe Kelly, Michael Lark, Marco Checchetto, Matt Southworth, Stefano Guadiano, and Matt Hollingsworth, Cassandra Webb is killed at the hands of Sasha Kravinoff. In one final act, she transfers her abilities, including her blindness, to Julia Carpenter, who then becomes the new Madame Web, showing how interconnected the character is with that trait.

If «Madame Web 2» ever happens, Dakota Johnson’s character will likely be blind the entire time. It could wind up being a more comic-accurate portrayal of Cassandra Webb compared to the first movie (assuming a sequel even occurs at all).

Han Solo’s parsec line from «A New Hope» always seemed like a huge «Star Wars» plot hole. It would finally get further clarification in 2018’s «Solo: A Star Wars Story,» which sees a younger Han (Alden Ehrenreich) go through the Kessel Run, a route that’s 18 parsecs long. However, Han and crew have to circumnavigate the typical route to evade the Empire, meaning they have to take a perilous shortcut. As such, Han literally completes the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs as opposed to 18, which is why it’s a bragging point in «A New Hope.» it’s Han boasting about how the Millennium Falcon can handle even the toughest paths.

However, while the original line was discussed and analyzed for decades, there’s a chance people overlooked what it actually could’ve meant. When rewatching Han’s encounter with Luke (Mark Hamill) and Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness), it’s important to look at Obi-Wan’s reaction. Han has the line about making the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, and then it cuts to Obi-Wan making a quizzical look. Han is a rogue and a scoundrel. It’s within his character to lie to get any job, and a guy like him, who may have only heard the term «parsec» in passing, may have lied so that Obi-Wan and Luke would hire him. Han’s talking a big game and misusing a term, which may fool Luke, but Obi-Wan sees right through him.

Han Solo’s parsec line may have never needed correcting. Either way, at least plenty of laypeople who don’t work in the science field will forever know parsec refers to distance, not time.

Even if George Lucas hasn’t outwardly expressed a hatred of glasses-wearing characters in «Star Wars,» there is an undeniable rarity to seeing such accessories. But long before Disney acquired the franchise in 2012, a handful of heroes and heroines donned their own pair of spectacles. 

A number of characters in non-canon «Star Wars» Legends comics, cartoons, games, and other media can be seen wearing glasses. This includes several pilots from «Star Wars» spinoff comics, Vago the Hutt in the novel «Tempest Feud,» and even C-3PO put on a pair to disguise himself in an episode of the animated series «Droids.» 

As far as live-action appearances, two notable names stand out. First, and the closest to being canon, is Saun Dann (Art Carney), the lovable trader and friend of the Wookies from «The Star Wars: Holiday Special.» While the canonization of the infamous 1978 television special is a bit complicated, Dann can nevertheless be seen wearing glasses during an Imperial inspection. Another television movie that included a glass-wearing hero was 1985’s «Ewoks: The Battle for Endor,» which introduced audiences to the kindly hermit Noa Briqualon (Wilford Brimley). Briqualon was specifically conjured up by George Lucas, who wanted the film’s young protagonist to befriend a grumpy old man, likely meaning he approved of the character to have glasses. 

So there you have it. Saying that «Star Wars» characters have been without glasses before Disney is not entirely accurate. And in any case, these spectacles have done little to put a dent in the overall spectacle of this beloved franchise. 

In a review for Looper’s sister site /Film, Jason Gorber called «Tenet» the «most Nolan-y of Nolan’s own films, amping the many quirks of this remarkable filmmaker’s visual, aural and temporal fetishes up to 11.» The positive review described it as «messily entertaining.» While the film does have its fans, it’s also sparked a considerable amount of backlash, thanks in part to its sound mixing, which can leave dialogue inaudible, forcing audiences to miss key exposition points. Nolan has since said that his sound mixing is a deliberate decision to create a more visceral experience.  

For Nolan, the most important thing is experience with a capital E. When asked by Stephen Colbert if his films had any meaning and if the director prioritized the cinematic experience above understanding films, the filmmaker said he preferred the latter. «If you experience my film, you are getting it — I feel very strongly about that,» the director said. «Where people encounter frustrations with my narratives in the past, sometimes I think they’re slightly missing the point. It’s not a puzzle to be unpacked.»

It’s sort of hilarious how «Tenet» has been heralded as this herculean film that has to be unpacked when the picture features dialogue that explicitly tells the audience to focus on the experience, not the logic. «Don’t try to understand it; feel it,» says Clémence Poésy’s scientist in the film as she tries to explain the idea of moving objects back through time. That suggestion obviously went over the heads of some viewers, including Christopher Nolan’s own Peloton instructor, who said, «You need to be a neuroscientist to understand [it].»

A key feature of Stan Lee’s costuming in his «Avengers: Age of Ultron» cameo is his hat. It reveals that Lee is playing a veteran of World War II, which is notable for two reasons. For one, it can be interpreted that Lee’s character knew Steve «Captain America» Rogers (Chris Evans) during the war, hence why he was invited to the party. More importantly, though, it highlights Lee’s actual military record. He famously enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 as the Second World War was heating up.

From 1942 to 1945, Lee was a member of the United States Army Signal Corps. This branch was responsible for the repair and maintenance of telegraph poles and other equipment used by the military to send urgent messages. He also worked in the Training Film Division, using his talents as a writer and artist to contribute to training films, manuals, military slogans, and more. In 2017, he was inducted into the Signal Corps Regimental Association and received honorary membership into the 2nd Battalion, 3rd United States Infantry Regiment for his service.

Over the years, Stan Lee landed numerous funny, heartfelt, and occasionally surprising cameos in a variety of Marvel projects. Still, between its humor, real-life connection, and stamp of approval from the man himself, Lee’s «Avengers: Age of Ultron» cameo is simply a cut above the rest.

The gradual rise of «The Shawshank Redemption» to the top spot of IMDb’s Top 250 list mirrors the film’s journey to becoming a beloved classic. Its release in September 1994 was met with disappointing box office returns, making a little over $16 million against its $25 million budget. Similarly, while met with outstanding critical response, the movie failed to take home a single golden statuette from its seven Oscar nominations. 

Time was kind to the Stephen King adaptation, as subsequent home media and television releases earned it a newfound appreciation. Even so, the film’s director, Frank Darabont, isn’t sure how to feel about the situation. In an interview with Paste Magazine (via Independent), the filmmaker shared, «[It] is a very surreal thing for me. I look at that list, and of course, I see ‘The Godfather,’ and ‘Citizen Kane,’ and you can’t help but think, ‘Is ‘Shawshank’ really better than ‘The Godfather?’» I find that a little hard to believe.» Nevertheless, the filmmaker said it’s «tremendously gratifying» that fans voted for his movie.

Whether aided by «The Dark Knight» or not, «The Shawshank Redemption» remaining No. 1 on IMDb’s Top 250 list is much like Andy Dufresne’s (Tim Robbins) own odyssey to freedom — beating all odds to achieve greatness. 

«The Hobbit» isn’t the only Middle-earth prequel story that Warner Bros. Discovery could pull from. «The Silmarillion» is an even more expansive collection of Middle-earth mythology that J.R.R. Tolkien meant to be published as a separate volume alongside «The Lord of the Rings.» However, the publishers weren’t particularly interested. The collection was later published posthumously by his son, Christopher Tolkien, with the greater story behind Middle-earth — including the world’s creation by Eru Ilúvatar, the awakening of the Elves, and the fall of Númenor — written in detail within this text. These stories are, of course, referenced in «The Lord of the Rings,» both the books and films, and are of particular importance to the world of Middle-earth.

In 2022, Amazon Prime Video decided to adapt the Second Age of Middle-earth with their series «The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.» Unfortunately, those behind «Rings of Power» don’t have the entire «Silmarillion» to work from (they can only use Tolkien’s appendices as inspiration), and that’s been to the show’s detriment. The Amazon series, which relies more on style than substance, feels more disconnected from Tolkien’s literary work than any other adaptation, and while there is some glint of decent material in there, it’s a bit too generic to stand out. A poor proxy for Tolkien’s legendarium, indeed. Hopefully, that will change in subsequent seasons, but thus far, «Rings of Power» doesn’t give us much hope for Middle-earth’s future, or its past.

During a 2023 interview with The New Yorker, Angela Bassett responded to Anthony Hopkins’ comments regarding the MCU and its lack of space for creative acting. She described her time starring in the «Black Panther» films as an immersive enterprise that fed into her tangible acting. «The throne room was there, the floor of red clay, the elevation with the Dora Milaje flanking around, the grand doors that they walk through,» recalled Bassett. «When Shuri and I went out into the wild, we had trees and bushes and water for yards and yards and yards, and Namor came up out of the water and flew to us … So I had it much better than Anthony Hopkins. I’m sorry for him. We were in Wakanda, and we know Wakanda is special.»

And special it was because Bassett made MCU history with an Oscar nomination for «Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.» She ultimately lost the best supporting actress award to Jamie Lee Curtis for her role in «Everything Everywhere All at Once,» but that hardly diminishes her breaking ground with the kind of exceptionalism audiences can expect from the MCU. While Hopkins might consider it pointless to act in a Marvel film, he still puts in the work elsewhere — or at least the Academy believes so. He took home the 2020 best actor Oscar for his role in «The Father,» another film in which he insisted that he wasn’t acting all that much — which begs the question, what does he think acting really is?

Suggesting Mrs. Coral devoured her young as if she was a seafood aficionado doesn’t quite hold up under scrutiny. And yet, it’s one of the more popular fan theories out there. The «Marlin’s family wasn’t really eaten by a barracuda» theory was first posted back in 2021. Since then, it’s received well over six million likes and has been shared over 185,000 times as of this writing. It is a top-trending theory on the social platform, and nearly 70,000 fans have chimed in with their thoughts.

TikTok user @geeyanmesa, for instance, summed up the experience for countless «Finding Nemo» fans by stating, «how to ruin childhood in 1 minute.» TikTokker @ms.ravn echoed the sentiment, saying, «why does everybody on tiktok wants to ruin my childhood.»

Multiple users also pointed out that the movie isn’t about finding Nemo, then. It’s about finding nobody. As with all comment threads on the internet, some contributors went in a weird direction, too. TikTok user @oleey, for instance, commented that the theory actually makes them like the story more. No explanation as to why, though.

Still others brought everything back down to earth. User @kris123431 said, «Yo you thinking to much this is a child movie,» while TikTokker @marioatolivegarden brought home the humor with the line, «bro it ain’t like the ocean…it’s not that deep.»

As a final flourish, the original poster ended their morbid theoretical rant by saying, «Disney, you have 24 hours to respond, or I’m just going to assume the worst.» As far as we’re aware, the House of Mouse has not posted a response to date.
