  • TikTok fashion designer collects roadkill to make her own fur coats in ‘greatest loophole’

TikTok fashion designer collects roadkill to make her own fur coats in ‘greatest loophole’

    [ad_1]

A fashion designer’s unique incorporation of roadkill in her fur designs has taken the internet by storm.

Ashe Cain of Tennessee regularly picks up and skins roadkill she sees on her drives. She later uses them to create sustainable fur clothing.

Cain dubs the decision a “loophole” to be able to ethically use and wear fur coats, seeing as the animals are already deceased when she finds them.

Using roadkill to create fashion fur designs

Cain shared the video of her work to TikTok on December 1, where it has since gained over 1.8 million views. In her video, Cain posed the common claim that “making fur coats is bad” while showing her designs featuring animal fur.

She went on to explain that she’s found “the greatest loophole” by using roadkill in her designs instead. Clips showed the designer retrieving the roadkill, putting on gloves, and even crawling along the highway to get the animals. Cain bags up the animal before putting it in a box in her trunk.

For Cain, a deer is the largest roadkill she’s tackled so far. The designer showed the garment with brown fur trimmings in a video on her TikTok.

Despite sharing her practice on TikTok, Cain says she’s aware that it might not be to everyone’s taste. “I know what I do is very controversial,” she said in a TikTok video. “Some of you are into it, some of you think what I do is disgusting. Some of you think I’m a freak or crazy.”

Overall though, Cain says she’s “just trying to give them a beautiful second life” through her work.

People are fans of the roadkill designs

Although Cain highlighted some of the negative reactions she’s received to her work, many have also voiced support for it and the positive environmental impact of reusing what is already there.

“Reduce, reuse, recycle. Rock on,” commented one viewer.

“Totally fine with me because roadkill always makes me really sad,” agreed another.

Cain lives in Tennessee, where collecting roadkill is completely legal. Anyone tempted to do the same however should check their state laws when it comes to collecting and using any roadkill.

Some states, like Texas, do not let people keep a roadkill animal unless they have specific hunting permits or licenses.

The reasoning behind this decision for many states is to prevent hunters from illegally killing animals along the roadway only to claim it as roadkill.

“Prior to this rule, poachers could claim that their illegal kill was collected on the road as salvaged roadkill. This rule change removed the possibility of a false defense,” Wildlife Public Information Officer Lerrin Johnson told CW39 earlier this year.

Facebook’s Barbara Furlow-Smiles stole $4 million to fund ‘lavish lifestyle’

    [ad_1]

Facebook global executive Barbara Furlow-Smiles pled guilty to stealing millions from her former company this week after charging fraudulent invoices over a four-year period.

From January 2017 to September 2021, California and Georgia resident Furlow-Smiles worked as Facebook’s Lead Strategist, Global Head of Employee Resource Groups and Diversity Engagement. Whilst working for Meta, the colleague also asked the company to pay for personal bills. These included her child’s intuition, which came in at $18k and a $10k portrait from an artist.

She defrauded Facebook using a variety of methods

The former social media executive operated her scheme in two ways: looping in friends and family to maximise efficiency. She claimed friends and family were providing services like marketing to Facebook, and then paid them through company credit cards linked to PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App accounts.

But said friends had not provided services and would instead funnel the money back to her or her husband. Furlow-Smiles would then file fake expense reports, prosecutors claim.

On other occasions, friends would give the money back to her in cash form. This was sometimes wrapped in t-shirts to conceal its nature, the Department of Justice said. Another mode of stealing came from giving people contracts and having them pay her back for the job. These included relatives, former interns from a prior job, nannies and babysitters, a hairstylist and her university tutor, lawyers alleged.

Furlow-Smiles also roped in Facebook to pay for personal expenditures like a $10k portrait from an artist and her child’s preschool tuition totalling a further $18k, the court heard.

It is unclear if associates have been charged in connection with the fraud.

Barbara Furlow-Smiles won’t be sentenced until next year

Furlow-Smiles appeared in an Atlanta, Georgia, court on Monday where she pled guilty to the charges posed by the state. The 39-year-old is set to be sentenced on March 19 and was released on a bond of $5,000.

Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan said: “This defendant abused a position of a trust as a global diversity executive for Facebook to defraud the company of millions of dollars, ignoring the insidious consequences of undermining the importance of her DEI mission.

“Motivated by greed, she used her time to orchestrate an elaborate criminal scheme in which fraudulent vendors paid her kickbacks in cash. She even involved relatives, friends, and other associates in her crimes, all to fund a lavish lifestyle through fraud rather than hard and honest work.”

Facebook said it’s working with authorities on the case

Facebook, owned by Meta, have released a statement: “We are cooperating with law enforcement on the case regarding this former program manager, and we will continue to do so.”

Keri Farley, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, also said: “Furlow-Smiles used lies and deceit to defraud both vendors and Facebook employees. The FBI works hard to make sure greed like this doesn’t pay off and those who commit fraud are held accountable.”

  • Scientists create first-ever ‘mind reading helmet’ with surprising accuracy

Scientists create first-ever ‘mind reading helmet’ with surprising accuracy

    [ad_1]

Scientists in Australia have created the first-ever mind-reading helmet that allows users to transmit their thoughts into text.

The words ‘mind-reading helmet instantly’ make you think of one person, Professor Charles Xavier. Or is that just us? The Marvel mutant and leader of the X-Men is a renowned telepath who empowers his already potent gift with a machine called Cerebro. While that technology is still a little far out, the future is here and it’s really cool.

What is the mind-reading helmet and how does it work?

Scientists at the University of Technology Sydney use AI to read brainwaves of thoughts and translate them into readable text. The creators say that among its many applications, it could be used to help people communicate after having a stroke.

A demonstration video showed a man sitting in front of the screen with a futuristic helmet on his head.

One example asked the guinea pig to picture the following sentence: “Good afternoon! I hope you’re doing well. I’ll start with a cappuccino, please, with an extra shot of espresso.”

The helmet then translates the sentence using an AI model called DeWave, with the screen now displaying, “translating the brainwaves into a text response.”

“Afternoon! You well? Cappuccino, Xtra shot. Espresso,” the screen then displayed, which is actually pretty close to the original sentence. Of the 29 people first used in the study, there was a 40% accuracy rate.

While this is still worlds away from Professor X’s levels of mind reading, the science is definitely heading in the right direction.

Scientists say the mind-reading helmet is a big breakthrough

While previous mind-reading devices, like Elon Musk’s, required a pre-installed microchip in the brain, this new version could revolutionise the technology going forward.

Lead researcher professor Chin-Teng Lin said: “This research represents a pioneering effort in translating raw EEG waves directly into language, marking a significant breakthrough in the field.

“It is the first to incorporate discrete encoding techniques in the brain-to-text translation process, introducing an innovative approach to neural decoding.

“The integration with large language models is also opening new frontiers in neuroscience and AI.”

Ari Fletcher says Instagram warned her over pantless ‘ceiling challenge’ video

    [ad_1]

Influencer Ari Fletcher has left fans waiting after claiming she finished filming her take on the ceiling challenge.

Fletcher took to Instagram to tease the upcoming video taking part in the ceiling challenge, leaving fans flooding her comments. She’s yet to share the video, but said she’s finished recording it and needs to edit it in an Instagram live.

However, the influencer said she had to change her initial plans for the video, after allegedly receiving an email from Instagram.

Ari Fletcher said she would do the trend on one condition

Fletcher posted to Instagram yesterday, December 14, teasing fans about her version of the ceiling challenger trend.

Sharing a photo of herself on a ladder attaching the phone to her ceiling with a ladder, Fletcher wrote: “50k comments and it’s up.” The second photo in the post was of Fletcher posing topless with a butterfly projected on her.

At the time of publication, the comments have tripled Ari Fletcher’s minimum request, with over 156,000 comments.

Fletcher says she’s filmed the ceiling challenge already

Despite the video not being posted yet, Ari Fletcher confirmed during an Instagram live that she has filmed it. The influencer said she was initially just joking about making the video, but now feels obligated to actually do it, seeing as it got so much attention.

She added that while she initially planned to make the video without pants, she allegedly received an email from Instagram warning her of the platform’s guidelines. “If we see any,  basically my skin, that they’ll deactivate my page so I have to keep the pants on,” said Ari Fletcher on Live. HITC.com has contacted Meta for comment.

In the live stream, she placed the phone onto the ceiling while playing the song out loud, telling fans that she was about to record the video.

During a later part of the stream, Ari Fletcher told viewers that she had finished the video and was waiting for the final edit in order to share it. “I just did the challenge,” she said. “Bo has to edit it and I’m about to post it.”

The popular video challenge has taken over TikTok in the past month, with users taping their cell phones to the ceiling and recording. The final outcome is a birds-eye view recording, which is then paired with the song “Surround Sound” by J.I.D.

Although the trend often sees people regularly dancing to the music, for many others, it’s a chance to show off twerking skills. Often, the video starts with the TikToker securing the phone to the ceiling, only to then cut to footage of them twerking on a floor or bed, filmed from above.

    [ad_1]

A series of edited images showing Donald Trump’s ‘quotes’ blaming President Joe Biden for the deaths linked to Panera Lemonade have fooled many on Twitter. There is one quote in particular about lemons that has caught everyone’s attention.

If you’ve been on X, formerly known as Twitter, in the past day, you would have come across images and even videos of Donald Trump‘s recent speech at a Trump 2024 rally. The former business mogul is bidding for another term of presidency as the national elections approach next year. However, what has caught a lot of eyeballs on X is a series of edited images that show Trump’s “quotes”, blaming Joe Biden for the deaths linked to the Panera Lemonade drink.

Donald Trump’s quotes on Panera Lemonade are fake

X is teeming with pictures of the 45th US President seemingly addressing the Panera Lemonade-related deaths in his speech. For those who think that Trump slammed Biden for the lemonade-linked deaths – let us make it clear that these images are fake and edited.

If you’ve come across any of these edited pictures on X, you would have surely seen a community note, explaining that they were created by comedy and satire writer Keaton Patti. However, the posts have fooled several users.

If you can spare the time to watch the former president’s full two-hour 15-minute speech, you’ll see that he does not mention anything about Panera lemonade or the lawsuit and deaths linked to it.

What the edited pictures of Donald Trump say

Keaton Patti shared four edited images with the caption, “I knew he’d get to the Panera lemonade at some point,” on X.

The first one sees a screenshot of Trump in front of a mic and the overlay text reads: “Everything is bad under Biden. Even the lemonade is killing people. Did you see that? People drink lemonade and die.”

A second image says: “The lemonade didn’t kill you when I was president. It was tasty and fun to drink. We loved the lemonade, didn’t we?”

The next one reads: “We did, but not under Biden. Bacon is more money. Gas is more money. The lemonade is more money and it kills you.”

The text in the final picture is what has made the most headlines. It says: “When life hands you lemons, Joe Biden kills you with them.”

While some quickly understood that this was meant as humor, others took it way too seriously.

“I’m at a hotel and I’d really like breakfast,” she says in the viral video. “I’ve never called the hotel or asked for room service before but I think that I can because I’ve looked at what I want for breakfast and it says all I have to do is dial star.”

She’s sitting in a hotel room holding the menu and freaking out because she’s never ordered room service before due to her autism. People with the developmental disability often have problems with social communication and interaction.

“I’m autistic if ya’ll are just seeing this for the first time. So this is weird. Oh my god I’m so nervous,” she continues before putting her head in her hands and trying to psych herself up to make the room service call.

Paige then practices what she’s going to say when she picks up the phone, reciting “Could you send a yogurt parfait up to room 3,003” before dialling star and shaking uncontrollably with nerves as she waits for the call to pick up.

The woman perfectly makes the call and also orders a coffee with milk, then hangs up the phone and drops to the floor as she is so happy and shocked that she actually managed to call room service all by herself.

“I did it, it’s coming and it was easy and it’s fine,” she says with her hands over her eyes, almost in tears of joy. “And no one’s mad at me or anything. That was awful.”

    TikTok relates to heartwarming video

TikTok users are flooding the comments with heartwarming messages expressing how proud they are of her, and many are saying they can relate to the struggle.

One person wrote: “YOU DID IT!!!!!! YOU EVEN ORDERED A COFFEE!!! I’m autistic too so I totally understand the struggle.”

A third person added: “I’m proud of you. You shouldn’t be anxious about it, you did so great.”

“Wow. It was amazing to see you mask. Your cadence and tone changed completely when you spoke to reception,” someone else added.

Another wrote: “That was SO smooth. I bet he couldn’t tell you were nervous at all. Proud of you!”

Chinese circus faces legal action after footage shows children riding tigers for photos

    [ad_1]

A circus was shut down this week after videos across social media showed children dangerously sat on the back of a tiger, posing for pictures.

Children visiting the circus in China were invited to ride the animal for $2.80 per picture. After footage of the attraction surfaced online, Chinese officials shut down the circus and ignited legal action, according to local media.

Videos online depicted a circus in Tiandong County in Southern China’s Guangxi province. The videos, which were posted on December 6 on the Chinese social media app Douyin, featured a tiger with children sitting on its back as they posed for photos by a photographer. The video can be seen on Twitter through this link here.

The tiger could be seen lying down with its hind legs tied down. Its front legs however weren’t restrained and its tail was seen moving too. As per the South China Morning Post, sources reported that the tiger was not sedated.

While animals involved in circus acts and tourist activities have long been an animal welfare concern, this particular incident also sparked worry over the safety of the children.

Children could be seen in the video queuing for their turn upon the tiger, paying 20 yuan ($2.80) per photo.

Since the video came to light, officials in China have shut down the circus, according to South China Morning Post.

The Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau told state broadcaster CCTV that the circus had been putting on “unauthorized performances” at Hengli Square.

Officials issued a notice demanding the end of performance by the circus and initiated legal action against the circus. Reports suggest that the circus is now closed and no longer running, but it’s unclear what has happened to the tiger.

After the video was shared on social media, the circus was met with global outrage over the children and tiger being in such close proximity, seemingly without necessary safety precautions.

Others also voiced concern for the well-being of the tiger. “Animals aren’t our entertainers. Leave them alone,” reads one popular tweet.

Jill Biden showed the world this year’s White House Christmas decorations with help from Dorrance Dance, a New York tap group.

Dorrance Dance was filmed tap dancing around the president’s home dressed up like characters from The Nutcracker. This year’s decor theme is “magic, wonder and joy” the Biden’s shared last month.

Sharing a video of the yearly decorations inside the White House has become a tradition in recent years.

Jill Biden shared the dance video from the White House

On Wednesday, December 13, Jill Biden posted the extravagant dance video to X, writing: “A bit of magic, wonder and joy brought to you by the talented tappers of Dorrance Dance, performing their playful interpretation of The Nutcracker Suite.”

Dancers from the troupe Dorrance Dance were filmed dancing in brightly-colored costumes, inspired by The Nutcracker. They began the performance by tapping in a candy cane-lined hallway in the White House before moving into the Blue Room, showing the impressively huge festive tree. The Blue Room has displayed the main Christmas tree since 1961.

The fun dance continued on into other parts of the house, showing the full decorations that truly lived up to the magic and wonder theme of this year.

    Who is Dorrance Dance?

Dorrance Dance is an award-winning New York-based tap dance troupe that was established in 2011 by Michelle Dorrance. The group regularly performs in theatres up and down the country.

The company aims to expand its audience and educate the next generation of tap dancers through their work, according to their site. “We engage communities on tour with lecture demonstrations, workshops, and school performances. We hold an annual tap dance intensive for pre-professional dancers in NYC. We partner with dance education programs to bring the form to public school students of all levels,” they write.

Michelle Darance was previously awarded the MacArthur “Genius Grant” in 2015 and has credits for the Winter Olympics along with opening ceremonies for the Cannes Film Festival.

    The group’s anti-racism ethos

According to the dance group’s site, anti-racism is an essential part of their mission and heavily influences their work as tap dancers. Founder Michelle Dorrance shared on the dance site that she is “a white tap dancer with Black cultural ancestors in a society that privileges white people and whiteness.”

“I am easy for white audiences wanting to access and experience elements of Black culture to swallow. My whiteness is the reason you may have heard of me before two of my inspirations, Ayodele Casel and Dormeshia, not to mention the legendary inspiration, elder, and griot, Dianne Walker. It is imperative for me, and those who look like me, to acknowledge that. It is imperative for us to fight against racist norms that have defined American culture since its very origin. If we do not do enough, this story will not change,” she continued in the post.

“In my generation, to be a tap dancer is to be an ambassador to the world for the unsung history of a Black art form. Taught, encouraged, and inspired by our elders to be more than dancer/musician-performers, my generation strives to be educators, creators, innovators, preservationists, and historians. It is our job to tell the history of tap dance as a celebration of Black culture and also the never-ending struggle against systemic racism and white supremacy in this country – the origin story of appropriation in American culture.”

A mom has gone viral on TikTok after digging a new part of a river in her backyard so that her kids can go fishing in the craziest neighbor feud.

The internet user, who has the handle @boymom4life77, has been documenting the insane dispute for months and finally hit breaking point this week.

Mom digs new section of river

In a viral video which was shared on Thursday (December 14), the woman shared clips of a huge yellow digger excavating the ground next to a river in her backyard.

“When your neighbor has harassed your family for three years,” she wrote. “She doesn’t want our boys to fish. She has called the police because my 13-year-old’s fishing line went into ‘her’ water.”

She claimed that the neighbor tried to press charges when her son kayaked on the river and put a fence up to stop them from launching boats and going fishing.

In another video, the mom explained that they have dug into their own land to move the water and allow them to continue to launch their fishing boats.

“She’s having a meltdown because now she’s not able to prevent us from getting to the main river,” she said in anger.

    Neighbor calls authorities

As soon as she saw the family digging, the neighbor called all kinds of authorities including the Homeowners Association, parish council, sheriff and Army Corps of Engineers.

The mom had received all the necessary permission she needed to dig the new trench, but the neighbour continued to be awkward and claimed they were digging her land.

She even claimed it was going to have an adverse action on her property and changed the water flow. However, the parish said there were no violations.

The “harassment” has been going on for three years and the mom claims her family has never done anything wrong.

Her neighbor’s issues have involved all kinds of things from the kids fishing in the river to driving a golf cart across their land and playing music.

    ‘You go mama!’

In the comments, TikTok users are applauding the mom for sticking up for herself and finding a way for her kids to go fishing.

One person wrote: “This gave me chills. You go mama!”

“I don’t know how you do it! I don’t have that kind of patience, but definitely would fight for my kids also. Good job!” said another.

A third person added: “The perfect example to prevail, instead of matching their negative energy. Happy for your family!”

“More power to you and your boys. I despise awful neighbours with a passion,” someone else said.

Instagram not sharing stories to Facebook in 2023 annoys users

    [ad_1]

Instagram users can’t figure out why the app isn’t sharing their stories on Facebook, while the issue could be lying on their end. You can share the same post that’ll disappear in 24 hours on both Meta platforms without much hassle and if it isn’t working for you, there are potential fixes.

Instagram is not sharing stories to Facebook in 2023

Instagram users took to Twitter to ask one another about the status of their Instagram stories, which aren’t getting posted to Facebook as they are supposed to.

The popular feature isn’t working for some despite tweaking the settings, which is supposed to push the temporary posts from Instagram to Facebook automatically.

One user shared: “Why is my Instagram now not sharing stories to Facebook? It’s all fully connected with the setting on but it just will not do it.”

When another seconded the above Tweet saying: “Happening to me too. I’ve tried sharing it manually and even tried changing the setting to share to Facebook again but automatically goes back to not sharing. Hopefully, it’s sorted soon.”

“So it’s not just me, I’ve been trying everything,” read one comment.

Instagram or Facebook haven’t addressed the issue at the time of writing this article.

Why your stories are not appearing on both apps simultaneously

Your stories on Instagram may not be getting shared to Facebook automatically if you’ve turned on the option under your Privacy settings. Follow the below steps to enable it.

    1. Tap the profile icon on the bottom right of your profile.
    2. Select the hamburger icon and tap on Settings and Privacy.
    3. Under Privacy, select Story.
    4. Scroll down to the Sharing option and toggle Share your story to Facebook.

Your stories from Instagram won’t appear on Facebook if the option isn’t enabled.

You can also share your stories manually by tapping below Your Story and then selecting the Sharing options. You can select from Share to Facebook Every Time or Share Once, according to your preference.

If your Instagram stories are still not showing, a potential bug could be responsible for the glitch. You can try the below potential fixes until Meta rectifies the issue.

    1. Log out of the app and log back into it.
    2. Close the app and open it again.
    3. Check if you have uninterrupted mobile data/wifi.
    4. Ensure you’re using the latest version of the app.

Man in Japan blows up his house trying to kill a single cockroach

    [ad_1]

In a desperate bid to kill just one cockroach that was plaguing his existence, a man in Japan caused a massive explosion in his house.

According to science, at all times were are surrounded by up to 100 creepy crawlies. On a bigger scale, there are roughly 1.4 billion insects for every person on Earth. But one Japanese man was plagued not by millions, but by a single cockroach that refused to die.

What led to the near-fatal explosion?

In the early hours of Sunday morning, in the city of Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu, an unidentified man was facing off against a solitary cockroach. In a last-ditch attempt to kill the insect, the man flooded his apartment in the Chuo Ward area with insecticide.

As reported by the Kumamoto Prefectural Police, this was a near-deadly error. The insecticide was actually highly flammable, as most are.

An explosion was heard in the surrounding area

The bug spray had ignited thanks to his kotatsu, which is a Japanese heated table that is often used to eat food. The consequential explosion shattered the exterior windows and left the man with minor injuries.

Shockingly, Japanese authorities have previously reported issues with insecticide combusting when coming into contact with electrical currents.

On Instagram, many users were left wondering whether the cockroach was killed in the explosion or if it’s still on the loose.

One person wrote: “I bet it crawled out like “dang that’s crazy… anyways.”

“id the cockroach die though,” another person wrote, while a third added, “And I bet that after all this sh*t, that thing is still alive!”

    Why are cockroaches so resilient?

For some reason, everyone knows that a cockroach would most likely survive a nuclear blast. But why are they such hardy creatures?

The environmental health website Berratine wrote: “Thanks to their tendency to live among toxin-producing bacteria and to eat plant matter that might hold toxic substances, roaches were “pre-adapted” to the insecticides that humans throw at them.”

TikToker Baylen Dupree tells Chris Cuomo he’s got a ‘baby wiener’ in hilarious Tourettes interview

    [ad_1]

American news anchor Chris Cuomo was nearly reduced to tears this week as he interviewed tourettes TikToker Baylen Dupree.

Baylen, @baylen.dupree on TikTok, is a well-known social media influencer who amassed over 9.1m followers and even more likes. Her content focuses on her experience of living with tourrettes and she is often applauded for her bravery and frankness while discussing such a sensitive topic.

Baylen Dupree appears on NewsNation’s Cuomo

During the conversation, Baylen exclaimed: “Go f**k yourself, Chris! Little baby weiner, Banana up your ass! Butter your own biscuit, fat ass!. F**k that b***h.”

In an incredible display of professionalism, Baylen jumped right back into talking about her experiences. She recalled how she often gets messages from “evil people”, with some telling her that “her parents should die in a car crash.”

“I’ve had to have the police out my house because people gave out my location and said they’re gonna come torch my house. It’s crazy,” she said.

Chris Cuomo struggles to keep composure

Throughout the interview, when Baylen would cut off what she was saying with a tick, Chris struggled to keep it together. The expletive-ridden statements were often directed at him, sparking his laughter. He also covered his mouth a few times in an attempt to stifle a giggle.

“She says some pretty ugly stuff unintentionally,” he said through laughter. “And I’m laughing because I get what it’s about. And that’s why I don’t care. It’s not curse words to be mean and the difference matters.”

Fans had a mixed response to Chris Cuomo’s interview

Social media users had varied reactions to the TV segment, with some suggesting that Chris was unprofessional and mocking.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Even though Chris Cuomo has never been a credible or professional tv host, it would be difficult for anyone to not react to this. Poor girl.”

Chris Cuomo hits back at the haters

Chris himself responded to the viral story the following night, as he said: “Last night, we did a story. It was a little dicey. People weren’t sure we could do it because there was going to be a lot of cursing and Dusty and I didn’t give a damn.

“And we were right. Why? Bayden Dupree has gone viral and for good reason. We loved giving her a platform to fight the stigma of having Tourettes Syndrome.

“Too many are mean and judgey, people have shamed her and recorded her because she has unusual tics. Her tics are like phrases, they’re repeated and they’re often vulgar.”

He concluded his monologue by noting Baylen’s bravery and how certain websites click baited the story with the intention of painting him in a negative light.

  • Seattle student fails high school quiz after saying only women can get pregnant

Seattle student fails high school quiz after saying only women can get pregnant

    [ad_1]

A high school student in Seattle, Washington, was marked down on a test after reportedly incorrectly stating only women can get pregnant.

The debate around ‘pregnant women’ versus ‘pregnant people’ has only become more fierce, and often derogatory, in recent years. For instance, some transgender men, who were assigned female at birth, fall into this category of pregnant people.

The issue came during a 10th-grade quiz on gender versus sex

An unnamed student at Chief Sealth International High School undertook a quiz entitled “Understanding Gender vs. Sex” in his Ethnic Studies class. Students were asked to comment true or false on various statements. Other questions on the test asked about pronoun usage.

The issue arose when the student answered true to both “All men have penises” and “Only women can get pregnant.”

Sex refers to “the different biological and physiological characteristics of males and females”, while gender refers to “the socially constructed characteristics of women and men”.

But, as the discussions of gender and sex expand, sometimes it becomes blurred for some individuals. This is where the term pregnant people came about. As reported on Healthline: “It’s possible for any individual with a uterus and ovaries to get pregnant.”

His mother took issue with the pregnancy question

Following the class quiz, the student’s mother spoke to the right-wing conservative talk show The Jason Rantz Show Sunday. She was not happy.

She scathed: “I keep trying to wrap my head around how it is legal to teach inaccurate information and force students to answer against their beliefs or receive negative scores.”

The unnamed mother was left with “frustration and anger” over the situation. She argued her son was simply giving his honest opinion. The mom claimed her son has been called a racist and “a product of the patriarchy that teaches young boys not to care about anything.”

Speaking to the New York Post, the school district argued the quiz was in line with the course structure of Ethnic studies.

They said: “[Seattle Public Schools] remains committed to fostering inclusive environments that encourage the exploration of contemporary issues, particularly the examination of power systems such as racism and patriarchy.

“This dedication extends to providing a space for thoughtful exploration and dialogue on these issues.”

The school also said the quiz results do not impact any of the student’s final grades.
